Ethel Bowles
KANNAPOLIS — Ethel Allen Bowles, 95, 312 E. 26 St., died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born June 19, 1905, in Davie County, Mrs. Bowles was a daughter of the late William Ashbury and Lelia Lackey Allen. A member of Rodgers Park Baptist Church, she had retired from the spinning room at Cannon Mills, Plants 1 and 7. She was active with the China Grove Senior Citizens Group.
Her husband, James R. Bowles, died in December 1961. She was also preceded in death by sons Ernest Bowles and James R. Bowles Jr.
Survivors include daughter Katherine Bowles Brackett, Kannapolis; sister Viola Allen Potts, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tony Fox. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Mary Katherine Carson
MOORESVILLE — Mary Katherine Carson, 79, Carson’s Place, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Care Inn Rest Home.
Born May 17, 1921, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late R.L. and Mattie Gouger Carson. Miss Carson had retired as a data processor at Burlington Industries after 40 years of service.
A member of Centre Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years. She was also a member of the Business Women Circle.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services: 11 a.m. today, Centre Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Marcus Prince III. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: The family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony in the Williams Building.

EAST SPENCER — Roger Dale Carter, 31, 112 W. Pinetree Drive., died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several days of illness.

James ‘Bob’ Gulledge
NORWOOD — James Lee “Bob” Gulledge, 67, 10807 Willow Oak Drive, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Darlington, S.C.
Born Aug. 18, 1932, in Albemarle, Mr. Gulledge was a son of the late Sidney Loy and Estie Jane Bailey Gulledge. Educated in the Albemarle schools, he received a business administration degree from Duke University in 1954 and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957.
He was associated with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. of Charlotte and Greensboro until 1967, when he became an independent accountant. A U.S. Navy veteran, he had served as a board member for Stanly County Habitat for Humanity, the Uwharrie Players, the Children’s Home in Winston-Salem, the Stanly County Heart Association, the Stanly County Community Concert Association and the Albemarle Downtown Development Corp.
Vice president of the Friends of Pfeiffer University Library, he was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he was a lay leader and a member of the administrative board.
He was a former secretary of the Albemarle Rotary Club and a volunteer with the YMCA, the American Cancer Society and the Stanly Çounty Nutrition Center.
Survivors include brother Sidney Loy Gulledge Jr., Raleigh; and sister Jane Gulledge Winecoff, Charlotte.

Annie Jackson
Annie Olema Morris Jackson, 79, formerly of 32 Lafayette Circle, died Tuesday (July 18, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Center after several years of declining health.
Born July 25, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of the late Ed and Bessie Gentry Morris. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a retired domestic worker.
There are no immediate survivors.

Idell K. Lewis
ROCKWELL — Idell Mattie Kerley Lewis, 85, formerly of Shuping Mill Road, died Friday (July 21, 2000) at the Brian Center, Concord, after four years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.
Born April 26, 1915, in Alexander County, Mrs. Lewis was a daughter of the late Harland and Grace Laws Kerley. She had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Kannapolis.
Her husband, Floyd Eugene Lewis, died in March 1987.
Survivors include daughter Ruby L. Stokes, Rockwell; sisters Edna Ballard and Betty Beaver, both of Kannapolis, and Mattie Dancy, Concord; brothers James Kerley, Kannapolis, and L.D. Kerley, Lake Norman; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Alma Oliphant
MOORESVILLE — Alma Lowrance Oliphant, 83, ALO Drive, died Friday (July 21, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 8, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Oliphant was a daughter of the late Samuel A. and Nannie Blackwelder Lowrance. A homemaker and a produce farmer, she was a member of Triplett United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Robert D. Oliphant, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons R. Powell Oliphant, Mooresville, and Joel A. Oliphant, Shallotte; daughters Nannie Lee Jones, Mooresville, Geraldine “Deane” Avett, Murphy, and Lena Jenkins, Eustis, Fla.; brother James W. Lowrance, Mooresville; half brothers Samuel M. Lowrance, Statesville, and P.Y. Lowrance, Columbia, S.C.; half sister Gertrude L. Skipper, Wilmington; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jila Bame Weddington
Jila Mae Bame Weddington, 87, Salisbury, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at her residence after being in declining health for the past four years and seriously ill for two years.
Born Sept. 16, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Weddington was the daughter of the late Cora Jane Peeler Bame Jones and the late William Bame. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.
Retired from KoSa, she previously worked at Fieldcrest Cannon and North Carolina Finishing Co. She was a member of Haven Lutheran Church, where she was active with the Minnie Phillips Circle and WELCA.
Her husband, Harry Franklin Weddington, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Michael Weddington, Tallahassee, Fla., Harry F. Weddington Jr., Cary, and Phillip Weddington, Midlothian, Va.; daughter Patricia A. Weddington, Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Robert York
MOCKSVILLE — Robert Paul York, 92, Church Street Extension, died Friday (July 21, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
Born July 31, 1907, in Iredell County, Mr. York was the son of the late David Hubbard and Mary Heath York. He had retired from Ingersoll-Rand and from First United Methodist Church, where he was a member. He was also a member of the Mocksville Lions Club, where he had served as Lion Tamer for many yers.
His wife, Daisy Sims York, died in 1991.
Survivors include son Robert Paul York Jr., Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter Jane Y. Kerr, Greensboro; sister Mary Lee Danner, Mocksville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Sunday, First United Methodist Church of Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Charles Turner. The body will be cremated.
Visitation: Sunday, following the service, at the church.
