ROCKWELL — Thomas Gordon Roberts,
78, 4019 Mount Pleasant Road, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at
NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Jan. 19, 1922, in Cabarrus
County, Mr. Roberts, a son of the late James Bost and Bess Barrett
Roberts, was a graduate of Bethel High School. He owned and
operated Hammonds Electric. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served
in the 100 Division of Albemarle during World War II.
Survivors include wife Dorothy Long
Roberts; daughter Dixie Davis, Landis; son Thomas Gordon Roberts
Jr., Concord; brothers J.B. Roberts, Concord, and Jennings
Roberts, Roseboro; sisters Elizabeth Staton, California, and Jane
Youndon, Marietta, Ga.; three grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m.
Saturday, Bogers United Church of Christ, Concord, conducted by
the Rev. John Bigelow. Military rites by DAVChapter 27.

Rev. Max L. Tussey
LEXINGTON — Max Lafayette Tussey,
69, Old Hwy. 64 West, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Lexington
Memorial Hospital.
Born May 19, 1931, in Davidson
County, Mr. Tussey was a son of the late Lafayette and Stella
Holder Tussey. He was a graduate of Catawba College, Salisbury,
and received a master’s of divinity degree from Lancaster
Theological Seminary.
He had served Rodgers Park United
Church of Christ, Kannapolis; Emmanuel United Church of Christ,
York, Pa.; Shiloh United Church of Christ, Faith; Portsmouth
United Church of Christ, Portsmouth, Va.; Heidelberg United Church
of Christ, Thomasville; Spoons Chapel United Church of Christ,
Asheboro; and Boger United Church of Christ, Concord. He was a
member of First Reformed United Church of Christ.
Survivors include wife Rita Clark
Tussey; son Stephen Tussey, Suwanee, Ga.; daughters Lynne Johnson,
Lexington, and Lori Tussey Bivins, Raleigh; and one grandson.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First
Reformed United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Mike
Hooper. Burial, Beulah United Church of Christ cemetery.

CONCORD — Isaac Eudonald Bruce,
78, 734 Traton Circle, brother of Hester Fortson, Kannapolis, died
Thursday (July 20, 2000) at his home. He had been in declining
health for 18 months and seriously ill for a month.

Jane White Early
The funeral will be Saturday for
Jane White Early, 77, 215 Lash Drive, who died Thursday (July 20,
2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.
Born July 21, 1922, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Early was a daughter of the late Joseph Linzy and
Letha Mae Kesler White. She was a 1940 graduate of Cleveland High
School and attended Appalachian State University.
Employed in secretarial work for a
number of years, she was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal
Church. She was active in the altar guild and ECW. She was also
active with the West Rowan Nutrition Site.
Her husband, Joseph L. Early, died
in 1959.
Survivors include sons Eddie
Davis,Cleveland, and Joe Early, Charlotte; brother Frank White,
Salisbury; and three grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 11 a.m.
Saturday, Christ Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Harold
Elsner. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: At the church after the
service. At other times the family will be at the home of Frank

Ralph Thomas Lyerly

Ralph Thomas Lyerly, 79, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (July 19,
2000) at his home after six months of serious illness.
Born March 1, 1921, in Rowan
County, Mr. Lyerly, a son of the late Arthur Amandus and Angie
Carolina Bostian Lyerly, was educated at Fink and Yost schools in
Rowan County.
He retired from Salisbury Machinery
Co. A member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury Moose
Lodge and Woodman of the World, he was a past member of Kannapolis
Lions Club and a member of Salisbury Knights of Pythias.
Survivors include wife Mary Goss
Lyerly, whom he married March 20, 1943; son Donald Lyerly,
Salisbury; sisters Beulah Cornelison and Lottie Honbarger, both of
Salisbury; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Thelma Moore Moore
EAST SPENCER — The funeral will
be Sunday for Thelma Moore Moore, 81, 208 Railroad Ave., who died
Tuesday (July 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
Salisbury.
Born March 8, 1919, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Moore was a daughter of the late Matthew and Lena
Hargrave Moore. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School and had
formerly been employed by Lexington Furniture,Lexington.
Survivors include son Gregory
Moore, Inwood, N.Y.; brother Zeb Moore, Washington, D.C.; and one
grandchild.

Martha Saultz Shuping
The funeral will be Saturday for
Martha Ellen Saultz Shuping, 85, Meadows of Rockwell, formerly of
Hwy. 152 East, Rockwell, who died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1915, in Ashe County,
Mrs. Shuping, a daughter of the late John and Sara Taylor Saultz,
was a 1933 graduate of Masonic Orphanage School, Oxford. A
homemaker, she was a member of Organ Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Lester CarlShuping,
died in 1971. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jackie
Laverne Shuping, and two infants.
Survivors include sons Lester Carl
Shuping Jr. and Thomas Ray Shuping, both of Rockwell; daughters
Thelma Jean Griffin and Shirley Joann Rogers, both of Rockwell,
and Brenda Carol Shuping and Cathy Dianne Phillips, both of
Salisbury; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
