KANNAPOLIS — Mary Magdalene
O’Neal Alley, 76, 1100 Cadillac St., died Wednesday (July 19,
2000) at University Hospital, Charlotte.
Born Dec. 23, 1923, in Davie
County, Mrs. Alley was a daughter of the late Zeb and Orphie
Jordan O’Neal. She had retired from Cannon Mills Co. A member of
Calvary Baptist Church for 50 years, she was also a member of VFW
Ladies Auxiliary.
Her husband, James Robert Alley,
died Sept. 23, 1995.
Survivors include sons James
“Jimmy” Alley, Belmont, and Robert “Buddy” Alley,
Kannapolis; daughter Judith Alley Gribble, Charlotte; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 today, Whitley’s
Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tom Tucker. Burial,
Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 3-4 today at the

Gertrude R. Beachum
RICHFIELD — Gertrude Idell
Ridenhour Beachum, 68, 48287 Gold Branch Road, died Tuesday (July
18, 2000) in Polkton.
Born June 6, 1932, in Stanly
County, Mrs. Beachum was a daughter of the late Charlie Marshall
and Fronnia Gatha Barringer Ridenhour. She was a homemaker and a
member of Open Door Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband Grover
Devane Beachum; sons Ted Devane Beachum, Polkton, Terry Jim
Beachum, Gold Hill, and Ricky Joe Beachum, Richfield; brothers
Elmore Davis and Vernon Hoyle Ridenhour, both of Salisbury;
sisters Mary Frances Randall, Louise Hatley and Faye Burroughs,
all of Albemarle; four grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

CHINA GROVE — Mildred Wilhelm
Eddleman Calhoun, 88, Genesis ElderCare, formerly of 1585 S. Main
St., died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at the nursing center.
Born May 9, 1912, Mrs. Calhoun, a
daughter of the late Albert Claudius and Ella Safrit Wilhelm, was
educated in the China Grove schools. She was a homemaker and a
member of Landis Baptist Church and the Lois Rutledge Circle.
She was preceded in death by her
first husband, Oscar Eddleman; her second husband, William
Calhoun; and daughter, Nita Lou Eddleman Douglas.
Survivors include stepson Giles
Calhoun, Mooresville; sister Ella Mae Kluttz, Wilmington; and
three step-grandchildren.

MOORESVILLE — Evelyn Morris
Douthit, 55, Johnson Dairy Road, died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at
her home.
Born Nov. 9, 1914, in Banks County,
Ga., Mrs. Douthit was a daughter of Lucille Bennett Morris,
Davidson, and the late Rev. J.W. Morris. Employed by Liburdi
Dimetrics Corp., Davidson, for 33 years, she was an executive
secretary. She was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, where
she was church pianist.
Survivors, in addition to her
mother, include husband Edward “Ed” Douthit, whom she married
June 30, 1963; son Charles Edward “Chuck” Douthit,
Mooresville; brothers Bradley Morris, Mooresville, and Randy
Morris, Freemont, N.H.; and sisters Dana M. Ward, Myrtle Beach,
S.C., and Cathy M. Witherspoon, Moores-ville, and Michelle M.

Linda Rose Ketner Ford
CHINA GROVE — Linda Rose Ketner
Ford, 61, 865 Ketner Farm Road, died Tuesday (July 18, 2000) at
NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born May 30, 1939, in Rowan County,
Mrs. Ford was a daughter of the late Carl Wright and Novella
Ridenhour Ketner. She was a tour guide at Cannon Visitors Center
for Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 for many years until 1985. She was a
homemaker.
A member of Ebenezer Lutheran
Church, she was active with WELCA and served as officer of the
state. She was a former Girl Scout leader, chairman of the
evangelism committee, a Sunday school teacher and member of the
church council.
Mrs. Ford was also active with the
Extension Homemakers of Rowan County, past president of the
Woodrow Wilson Elementary School and Bostian Elementary School
PTAs and a former guardian ad litem.
Survivors include husband M.D.
Ford; sons Carl Lindsey Ford, China Grove, and Eddie Ray Ford, of
the home; daughters Monica Ford Newsome, Kannapolis, and Paulette
Ford Wilson, China Grove; sisters Esther Armstrong, Kannapolis,
and Judy Gainey, China Grove; and seven grandchildren.

OAKBORO — Joe Laine Harris, 63,
9474-B Harris Road, died Monday (July 17, 2000) at his home.
Born April 4, 1937, in Stanly
County, Mr. Harris was a son of the late Lee Andrew and Lillie
Hatley Harris. He had retired as a gas tank installer from Quality
Gas, Oakboro.
A son, Ricky Harris, preceded him
in death.
Survivors include daughter Debra
Chavis, Rockingham; sons Andrew Harris, Burlington, and Dennis
Harris, Stanfield; sisters Maria Burris and Carol Morgan, both of
Albemarle, and Dixie Harris, Oakboro; brothers Bobby Allen, James

Mabel Foster Lanier
MOCKSVILLE — Mabel Louise Foster
Lanier, 80, formerly of East Depot Street, died Wednesday (July
19, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Davie County,
Mrs. Lanier, a daughter of the late Martin Gurner and Wincie
Jeanette Sedberry Foster, was a homemaker.
She was a life member of First
Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school in the primary
department. She was a well known cook.
Her husband, Robert Pershing
Lanier, died in 1987.
Survivors include sons Robert P.
and Dale Lanier, both of Advance; daughters Jacqueline Winters,
Mocksville, and Kay Carter, Advance; brother George Foster,
Cooleemee; sisters Helen Hendricks and Deloras Poplin, both of
Mocksville; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Dees Lombard
MISENHEIMER — Mary Dees Lombard,
86, Misenheimer, died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) in Misenheimer.
Born May 13, 1914, in Greensboro,
she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Dees. She
attended Greensboro College, received her undergraduate degree
from William & Mary College and her master’s from the
University of Arizona. She was director of dietary services for
the Waukegan-North Chicago School System.
She spent most of her adult life in
Illinois and Virginia before returning to North Carolina 12 years
ago. An active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, in
her later years she became an accomplished painter and woodcarver.
Her husband, George Lombard,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include nieces and
nephews.

Born Sept. 11, 1919, in Stanly
County, Mrs. White was a daughter of the late Robert and Jo Anna
Morgan Josey. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and had
worked as a self-employed beautician for several years.
She was a member of Salisbury Women
of the Moose Lodge 600 and the American Legion Auxiliary of
Salisbury.
Her husband, William A. White,
preceded her in death.

Billie Mitchell, Calabash; and Ann Haney of Salisbury, who was
reared in the home.
