Harvey Lee Hairston

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Thursday for Harvey Lee Hairston who died Sunday (July 16, 2000) at Golden Age Nursing Home after a period of illness.

Born in Davidson County, Mr. Hairston was a son of the late Sandy and Beatrice Crump Hairston. He was a veteran of World War II.

Retired from Dixie Furniture Co., he was a member of Buncombe Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Lessie Mae Hairston; sons Harvey Bishop Hairston Jr. and James Lee Hairston, both of Lexington; daughter Mae Deen Hairston James, Linwood; brother Verdeen Hairston, Lexington; and sister Eulala Jarels, Lexington.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Graham Funeral Home Chapel, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Randall B. Baldwin. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 12 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Mabel Foster Lanier

MOCKSVILLE — Mabel Louise Foster Lanier, 80, formerly of East Depot Street, died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Her husband, Robert Pershing Lanier, preceded her in death.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Norman E. Leach Jr.

The funeral will be Thursday for Norman E. Leach Jr. 61, 418 W. Franklin St., who died Monday (July 10, 2000) at W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Thursday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by Chaplain Reginald Massey.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home on West Franklin Street.

Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

 

William ‘Bill’ Lowder

NEW LONDON — William Hudson “Bill” Lowder, 78, 37952 U.S. 52 Hwy. N., died Tuesday (July 18, 2000) at Mercy Hospital.

Born May 28, 1922, in Badin, Mr. Lowder was a son of the late Sam J. and Ann Weber Lowder. He was a 1941 graduate of Badin High School.

During World War II, he served three years with the Army Air Corps in the 53rd Bombardier Squadron, B-29 Division. He was stationed in Guam.

Retired, he had been a self-employed farmer, raising cattle, grain, poultry and swine.

Survivors include wife Marie Ellis Lowder; son Gary S. Lowder, Albemarle; brother Cello B. Lowder, Stoneville; sister Dorothy L. Bowers, Badin; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Claud Dick. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Hwy. U.S. 52 North.

 

Martha E. Shuping

Martha E. Shuping, 85, The Meadows of Rockwell, died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

William Thomas Shuping

William Thomas Shuping, 75, Salisbury, died Tuesday (July 18, 2000) at his home after a year of serious illness.

Born Dec. 24, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Shuping, a son of the late John T. and Cleatie Parnell Shuping, was educated in the Rowan County schools. He retired in 1987 as a mechanic from Southern Railway after 41 years.

A member of Christ Lutheran Church, East Spencer, he served on the church council, was co-chair of the property committee and a member of the Isenhour Bible class.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving with the 54th General Hospital Unity in the Pacific as a surgical technician.

Mr. Shuping was also a member of Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006, Brotherhood of Railroad Carmen and a volunteer with the East Spencer Fire Department for 27 years.

A daughter, Sandra Sue Shuping, died in 1950.

Survivors include wife Cora Lee Loflin Shuping; daughter Jane Shuping, Salisbury; sisters Geneva Rusher, Salisbury, and Margie Godbey, King; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor, Union Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Mildred Thompson Sigmon

LANDIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Mildred Thompson Sigmon, 70, 1009 N. Chapel St., who died Monday (July 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 4, 1929, in Rowan County, Mrs. Sigmon was a daughter of the late Zeb and Beaulah Carpenter Thompson. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had retired from Linn Mill.

Her husband, Charles Ray Sigmon, died May 28, 1989.

Survivors include daughters Anita Nicholson, China Grove, Patricia Fike, Landis, and Angela Graham, Mount Ulla; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home Chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Roger Lunsford. Burial, Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on North Chapel Street.

Mary Gene Houck Thomas

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Mary Gene Houck Thomas, a former Salisbury resident, died Tuesday (June 20, 2000).

Born Oct. 21, 1924, in Eastman, Ga., Ms. Thomas was a daughter of the late Eugene and Jimilee Houck. She lived in Salisbury during the 1930s and early 1940s and was a graduate of Boyden High School.

Survivors include sister Elinor Dreher Houck Dickinson, Fairfax, Va., whom she reared; children Susie Margaret Ross, Little Rock, Ark., Beth Thomas Sheller, Franklin, Tenn., and James Eugene Thomas, Yakima, Wash.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held on June 24 at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church. The body was cremated and the remains scattered at Point Reyes.
