Gary Dean Coughenour
The funeral
will beThursday for Gary Dean Coughenour, 49, 1040 Sidney
Drive, who died Monday (July 10, 2000) at his home.
Born March
17, 1951, in Rowan County, Mr. Coughenour was a son of Hazel
Simmons Coughenour, Salisbury, and the late Thomas
Coughenour. He was a graduate of West Rowan High School and
North Carolina State University, Raleigh.
Retired from
Cannon Mills in Fort Mills, S.C., he was a member of the
Masonic Lodge and the Moose Lodge in South Carolina.
Survivors, in
addition to his mother, include brothers Kenneth Coughenour,
Woodleaf, Paul Coughenour, Salisbury, and James Coughenour,
Faith.
Services: 11
a.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by
the Rev. Don Heglar. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family
will be at the home of his mother, Hazel Coughenour, 2175

Stoessel Smith
ALBEMARLE —
Katherine Stoessel Smith, 84, 1500 Lee Lynn Drive, died
Monday (July 10, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare Rehabilitation
Service.
Born Jan. 5,
1916, in Salisbury, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late
William Michael and Leonie Mampe Stoessel. A homemaker, she
was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Her husband,
Hazel “Chunk”Smith, preceded her in death.
Survivors
include sons Stephen Charles Smith, Cleveland, Ohio, and
David Michael Smith, Albemarle; daughter Peggy Smith Grigg,
Albemarle; brother William Michael Stoessel Jr., Salisbury;
sisters Eugenia S. Seaver, Winston-Salem, Edith S. Landon,
Fayetteville, Emma S. Ozment, Laurinburg, and Stella S.
Gillespie, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.

Douglas Stamey
KANNAPOLIS
— The funeral will be Friday for Rodney Douglas Stamey,
35, 2107 W. C St., who died Monday (July 10, 2000).
Born March
22, 1965, in Iredell County, Mr. Stamey was a son of Robert
E. and Nancy Overcash Stamey, Kannapolis. He attended South
Rowan High School and was a graduate of Richmond County
Community College.
A foreman for
Bob Stamey Associates and Builders for six years, he
attended Bethpage United Methodist Church.
Survivors, in
addition to his parents, include wife Shelly Oliver Stamey;
daughters Teena Marie, Kaylan Rae and Hanna Nicole Stamey,
all of the home; sisters Pamela D. Stamey and Tammy Wallace,
both of Kannapolis; brother Bob Stamey, Kannapolis; and
paternal grandfather Grayson O. Stamey, Kannapolis.

Betty Jane
“Polly” Verble, 67, Salisbury, died Tuesday (July 11,
2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 23,
1932, in Rowan County, Miss Verble, a daughter of the late
Arthur Lee and Fannie Mae Goins Verble, was educated at
Rockwell High School. She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1
weave room in 1980 and was a member of Rockwell United
Methodist Church.

include brother Charles Lee Verble, Salisbury.

— The funeral will be Thursday for Margie L. Allman
Weddington, 69, 485 Allman Road, who died Monday (July 10,
2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 21,
1930, in Rowan County, Mrs. Weddington, a daughter of Zola
Wilkinson Allman, Mooresville, and the late Marshall E.
Allman, was educated in the Landis schools.
She retired
from the staple department at Hoechst-Celanese and was a
member of West Corinth Baptist Church.
Survivors
include husband Alvin T. Weddington; sons Garry R.
Weddington, Cleveland, Larry W. and James Dwight Weddington,
both of Mooresville, and Michael A. Weddington, Salisbury;
daughter Karen Baxter, Mooresville; sisters Helen Brotherton
and Bertie Thompson, both of Mooresville; 12 grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.

CLEVELAND —
The funeral will be Thursday for Rufus Alexander Williams,
49, 414 E. Main St., who died Saturday (July 8, 2000) in
Cleveland.
Born May 10,
1951, in Rowan County, Mr. Williams was a son of Bertha
Williams Gray, Concord, and Major Ellis, Salisbury. He was a
1968 graduate of Boyden High School, now Salisbury High
School, and attended Randolph Technical College, Asheboro.
He was last
employed as a welder with Russell Welding &Fabrication
Co., Cleveland.
His wife,
Brenda Payne Williams, preceded him in death.
Survivors, in
addition to his parents, include son Jimi Williams, of the
home; stepdaughter Calelia Naomi Robinson, Charlotte;
brother Robert “Bobby” Gray, Cleveland; and one
grandchild.

Annie Mae
Wood, 88, Rochester, N.Y., died Saturday (July 8, 2000) at
Rochester General Hospital.
Born June 22,
1912, in Rowan County, Ms. Wood was a daughter of the late
Will and Maggie Berrie. She was educated in the Rowan County
schools.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, John Westley; and
children, John Westley Jr., James Alford, Frank, Bessie Mae,
and Howard.
Survivors
include sons Bishop Ralph Wood and Mason and Nathan Wood,
all of Statesville; daughter Beverly Wood, Rochester, N.Y.;
34 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; 27
great-great-grandchildren; and six great-great-great
grandchildren.
