Cecil Branan

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Cecil Branan, 72, Mocksville, who died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a period of illness.

Born in IrwinCounty,Ga., Mr. Branan was a son of the late Fletcher and Effie Smith Branan. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, he received the Victory Medal. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Cochran, Ga., and a retired pharmacist.

Survivors include sons Bruce M. and Joseph F. Branan, both of San Diego, Calif.; and daughters Lenora B. Schaber, Montgomery, Ala., Barbara Harris, Hanover, Md., and Carol R. Branan, San Diego, Calif.

Services: Memorial, 5 p.m. Saturday, Graham Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Dale Steele and the Rev. Keith Flippin.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Mickey Leroy Collins

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Thursday for Mickey Leroy Collins, 69, Rockwell, who died Saturday (July 8, 2000).

A daughter, Cynthia Louise Collins, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Mary J. Hall Collins; children Mickey Leroy Collins Jr., Debra, David, James and Shane Collins, Saundra Dailey Rodgers, Jodie Dailey Tucker and Jennifer Fleming; brothers Lonnie and Roger Collins; sisters Iris Stowers, Oma Ball and Joan Brewster; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Harrison Funeral Home Chapel, Greenville, Ala., conducted by the Rev. Harry Driggers and the Rev. Lane Simmons. Burial, Mount Willing Cemetery.

Jermaine ‘Dot’ Compton

MOORESVILLE — Jermaine “Dot” Morrow Compton, 77, Mount Ulla Highway, died Monday (July 10, 2000) at her home.

Born Nov. 12, 1922, in Iredell County, Mrs. Compton was a daughter of the late Robert Calvin and Alice Swann Morrow. She had retired from Burlington Industries, Mooresville, after 39 years with the company.

She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include husband Floyd Compton, whom she married July 4, 1942; and brother Marvin “Mode” Morrow, Mooresville.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Glenwood Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Michael Macdonald and Dr. Doris C. Weddington.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home on Mount Ulla Highway.

Margaret Wright Cook

SILER CITY — Margaret Wright Cook, 65, died Monday (July 3, 2000) .

Born June 22, 1935, Mrs. Cook was a daughter of Edward Lee Wright and Margaret Eaker of Concord. She had retired from Bill’s Motor Inn, Siler City.

Survivors include husband FrankCook; daughter Lynne Cook,Gold Hill; son TroyCook, Granite Quarry; brother William Wright, Abbeville, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

The body has been donated to the University of North Carolina Hospitals for research. No services are planned.

 

Gary Dean Coughenour

Gary Dean Coughenour, 49, 1040 Sidney Drive, died Monday (July 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Terry Martin Foster

WOODLEAF — Terry Martin Foster, 50, Woodleaf, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at her home.

Born Dec. 3, 1949, in Greensboro, Mrs. Foster was a daughter of Gladys F. Bennick, Florence, S.C., and the late Isaac Martin. She was educated in the Guilford County schools.

A production clerk for KoSa Industries, where she had worked since 1974, she was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Cleveland, and the Eastern Star, Rockwell chapter.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Doug Foster; daughters Crystal Catherine Schenk, Cleveland, and Dawn Kay Foster, of the home; brothers Timothy M. Martin, Cleveland, Jeffrey T. Martin, Vermont, and William P. Martin, Alliance, Ohio; sisters Linda Riley, Pittsburgh, Kathy D. Small, Florence, S.C., and Rhonda K. Martin, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday,Cornerstone Baptist Church, Cleveland, conducted by the Rev. Mack Jarvis, III. Burial, Unity Presbyterian Church cemetery, Woodleaf.

Rev. Howard W. Irvis

STATESVILLE — The Rev. Howard W. Irvis, 79, 1226 Wall St., died Saturday (July 8, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 5, 1920, in Coxsackie, N.Y., Mr. Irvis was the son of the late William J. and Jennie Mae Bogardus Irvis. A graduate of Coxsackie High School, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He later attended Livingstone College, Salisbury.

He was ordained into the AMEZion Church in 1954. He had served as pastor in Catskill, N.Y., as well as the following AME Zion churches: SouthernCity, East Spencer; Center Street (now Mount Pleasant), Statesville; and Moore’s Chapel, Cleveland. Most recently, he served as associate pastor at Zion Chapel, Hiddenite.

A member of the Elks Club since 1954, he had served as assistant chaplain and chaplain for the state organization. He was associated with Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home and Clyburn and Bigham Funeral Home, Mooresville, for several years.

A son, Ronald C. Irvis, died in 1981, and another son, Howard W. Irvis Jr., died in 1997.

Survivors include wife Muriel E. DeWitt Irvis, whom he married Sept. 13, 1941; son Frederick C. Irvis, Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter Pamela Hunter, High Point; sisters Ethel Irvis Loftis, Amityville, N.Y., and Lula Irvis McFoler, Catskill, N.Y.; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mount Pleasant AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy C. Flemming. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Final rites at 8:30 p.m. by Elks’ state organization.

 

Margaret Lenora McCrary

LEXINGTON — Margaret Lenora McCrary, 78, 321 W. Seventh Ave., died Monday (July 10, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include sister Grace Lopp, Lexington.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Freeze and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Grace Lopp, 708 S. Ford St.

Mildred Wilhelm Overcash

MOORESVILLE — Mildred Wilhelm Overcash, 84, Mooresville Road, died Monday (July 10, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Jan. 12, 1916, in the Shepherd community, Mrs. Overcash was a daughter of the late Daniel Webster and Mamie Elizabeth Benfield Wilhelm.

Retired from Draymore Manufacturing after 10 years with the company, she had also worked at Cascade Mills for 19 years.

A member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Mount Ulla, she taught children’s Sunday school classes for 12 years. She had also worked with the youth for many years and was a former president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.

Survivors include husband Kenneth Overcash.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Centenary United Methodist Church, Mount Ulla, conducted by the Rev. Robert W. Wiseman and the Rev. Buddy Champion. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Samuel Sharp Ryburn

CHARLOTTE — Samuel Sharp Ryburn, Charlotte, died Saturday (July 8, 2000).

Born March 4, 1917, near Denniston, Va., Mr. Ryburn was a son of the late Oscar and Sue Owen Ryburn. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he was a 1938 graduate of Davidson College.

Mr. Ryburn walked in the CROPWalk for 14 years and raised more contributions than anyone else in the world.

After leaving Davidson, Mr. Ryburn joined The Herald Press, Inc., a commercial printing and label manufacturing firm in Charlotte. At the outbreak of World War II, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps. A multi-engine pilot, he flew 50 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal.

In 1946, he was instrumental in forming Package Products Co., a firm which made printed flexible packaging materials. He worked for the firm and its successor, Engraph Inc., for 43 years, serving as treasurer, corporate secretary, vice president and director.

He was also executive vice president of Champlain-Zapata, a subsidiary company manufacturing molded plastic products.

Mr. Ryburn was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, an elder, a member of the music committee, a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school.

He was a member of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club, serving as its president and on the board of directors. He was also a member of the Charlotte Country Club and the Good Fellows Club.

Survivors include son Samuel Sharp Ryburn Jr., Stonington, Conn., and Mark Wimberley Ryburn, Charlotte; daughter Susan Ryburn, Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Covenant Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. John Rogers. Private committal at Covenant columbarium.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Harry and Bryant Funeral Home.

Dennis Mark Scott

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Saturday for Dennis Mark Scott, 36, 1330 Feezor Road, who died Friday (June 30, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 21, 1964, in Cleveland,Ohio, Mr. Scott was a son of Geneva Scott, Lexington, and Crenshaw Scott, Bellflower, Calif. Educated at Salisbury Academy in Salisbury, Conn., he received a degree in archaeology from Yale University and a master’s degree in library science from Berkeley University. He was an archivist librarian at Boston College.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include stepfather Ira L. Harris,Lexington; brother Michael White, Lacy, Wash.; and sisters Karen M. Smith, Collinswood, N.J., Kellee Scott, West Hollywood, Calif., and Kimberly Orr, Bedford Heights, Ohio.

Services: Memorial, 1 p.m. Saturday, New Community Bible Fellowship Church, Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Berlin ‘Burl’ Stirewalt

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Berlin “Burl” Alexander Stirewalt, 90, 2275 Daugherty Road, who died Monday (July 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Oct. 2, 1909, in Rowan County, Mr. Stirewalt was a son of the late Dock Henderson and Ida Koon Stirewalt. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from China Grove Cotton Mill.

He was a member of Woodmen of the World and Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and youth counselor.

Survivors include wife Mawsa Edna Elliott Stirewalt; daughter Helen Moore, Charlotte; sister Edna S. Wilhoit, China Grove; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Duncan. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on Daugherty Road.

Emma Burris Warden

ALBEMARLE — Emma Burris Miller Warden, 36, Moss Point, Miss., an Albemarle native, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) in Pascagoula, Miss.

Born Oct. 25, 1963, Mrs. Warden was a daughter of Horace and Jean Miller, New London. She was a 1982 graduate of North Stanly High School and received a bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1986 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A homemaker and a registered nurse, she was a member of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church and Pascagoula Civic Guild, both in Pascagoula, and Moss Point Garden Club, Moss Point, Miss. She served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army and was a member of the Singing River MedicalAlliance.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Dr. Clark Warden; son Parker Warden, Moss Point; sister Mary Miller Mason, Newport, Ky.; and grandparents Virgil and Pauline Burris, New London.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday,Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church, Pascagoula, Miss., conducted by the Rev. Gerard Cleary.

Visitation: 6-9 today, Jackson-County Funeral Services, Escatawpa, Miss. Rosary at 7.

The body will be brought to Hartsell Funeral Home for visitation on Thursday from 6-7 p.m. A memorial service will be held immediately after the visitation, with graveside services at a later date.

MOORESVILLE — Margie Weddington, 69, Mooresville, died Monday (July 10, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Cora Lee Truesdale Zaky

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Thursday for Cora Lee Truesdale Zaky, 76, 603 Pinetree Drive, who died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after a year of declining health.
