Obituaries

            Eula Mae Heilig Black

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Wednesday for Eula Mae Heilig Black, 90, 243 Heiligtown Road, who died Saturday (July 8, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 5, 1910, in Rowan County, Mrs. Black was a daughter of the late Lurin and Mamie Barnhardt Heilig. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a member of Yadkin Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Black had been employed as a domestic worker and retired from Dixie Furniture Co.,Lexington.

Her husband, Lloyd Black, died in 1987. She was also preceded in death by sons, Clifton, Samuel Bobby, Raymond Lloyd, James Buford and William Edward Black, and a granddaughter.

Survivors include sons Paul Eugene and Calvin Black, both of Salisbury, and Phillip Black, Fayetteville; daughters Irence Corpening, Valeria Turner and Brenda Clark, all of Salisbury; sister Montrula H.Clark, Spencer; 16 grandchildren; and several great-, great-great- and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home Chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. James L. Stowe, pastor, Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, Salisbury. Burial, Oakdale Cemetery,Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Mary Deaton Byrd

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Tuesday for Mary Elizabeth Deaton Byrd, 80, 291 Sunset Drive, who died Saturday (July 8, 2000).

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Jim Byrd, 378 Sunset Drive.

 

Floyd Dewalt Jr.

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Floyd Dewalt Jr., 16, Mocksville, who died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at Davie County Hospital.

He was the son of Shirley Dalton, of the home, and Floyd Dewalt of Mocksville.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brothers Jesse James Dalton and Tyrone Martin, both of Mocksville; and grandmother Evelyn Dewalt, Winston-Salem.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Graham Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Bishop James Ijames. Burial will be at a local cemetery.

Visitation: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Rosie Hall Gilliam

Rosie Hall Gilliam, 87, Salisbury, formerly of Wise,Va., died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. The body will be taken to Buford Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, Va., for services.

 

Michael Eugene Kirk

RICHFIELD — The funeral will be Tuesday for Michael Eugene Kirk, 52, Richfield, who died Saturday (July 8, 2000) in Salisbury from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 10, 1947, in Rowan County, Mr. Kirk was a son of Carrie Trexler Bumgardner, Rockwell, and the late David Wallace Kirk and the stepson of Wesley Bumgardner, Rockwell.

He was educated in the Rowan County schools and Diesel Mechanic School, Nashville, Tenn. A past assistant manager for Shoney’s, he had also worked as a mechanic for Dave Enterprises. He was a member of Luther’s Lutheran Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include sons Michael Shane Kirk, Landis, and Michael Eric Kirk, Washington, N.C.; daughter Crystal Gibby, China Grove; brother Steve Kirk, Spencer; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Alfred D. Rhyne, pastor, Luther’s Lutheran Church. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Lauren Kirk in Richfield.

Mazie Foster Melton

MOCKSVILLE — Mazie Foster Melton, 85, Milling Road, died Saturday (July 8, 2000) at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie.

Born Sept. 7, 1914, in Davie County, Mrs. Melton was a daughter of the late George L. and Ella Barney Foster. A 1930 graduate of Smith Grove High School, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Dulin United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher in the nursery department and a member of the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gurney Martin Melton, whom she married in 1935.

Survivors include sons Billy G., Wayne F. and Jimmy R. Melton, all of Advance, and Clyde Melton, Courtney; daughter Ruth Buchanan, Mocksville; brother George Foster, Mocksville; sisters Colleen Foster and Gladys McNeil, both of Mocksville, Lucille Orrell, Hazel Thomas and Gertrude Robertson, all of Advance, and Helen Orrell, Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dulin United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert McLawhorn and the Rev. Ray O’Ferrell. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Service.

Edward R. Miduch

Edward R. Miduch of Salisbury and Arlington, Va., died at his home in Arlington, Va., on Saturday (July 1, 2000) due to congestive heart failure.

Born in Detroit, Mich, Mr. Miduch was a son of the late John and Catherine Miduch of Brown City, Mich. He attended Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.

As a mechanical engineer for U.S. Industries, Fairchild, and Litton, he specialized in designing and building equipment primarily for the food and beverage industry. He retired from Litton in Salisbury in 1994.

Survivors include wife Marjorie Cowan Miduch; son J. Warren Miduch, Woodbridge, Va.; daughter Anne Cowan Miduch, Falls Church, Va.; sister Helen Miduch Nowicki, Sunnyvale, Calif.; and one grandson.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Arlington Funeral Home, Arlington, Va., is in charge.

Burl C. Thompson

MOORESVILLE — Burl C. Thompson, 86, Mecklenburg Highway, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville.

Born March 8, 1914, in Iredell County, Mr. Thompson was a son of the late Lawrence “Lon” and Sally Thompson. He had retired from Burlington Industries and had worked in the shipyards in Baltimore, Md., during World War II.

He was a charter member of Mount Mourne Volunteer Fire Department and served as assistant chief. Mr. Thompson was a former member of Cornelius Lions Club.

A member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Cornelius, he held various offices. He was the past chairman of the administrative board, a member of the choir, the Ben Brown Sunday school class and the evangelism board.

Survivors include wife Zetta Howard Thompson; sister Sara Grace Stutts, Mooresville; and brother Lamont Thompson, Mooresville.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Cornelius, conducted by Dr. Terry Matthews. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Rufus Alexander Williams

CLEVELAND — Rufus Alexander Williams, 49, 414 E. Main St., died Saturday (July 8, 2000) in Cleveland.

Mitchell &Fair Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Bonnie Reed Winecoff

Bonnie Gaye Reed Winecoff, 74, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a year of declining health.

Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Tazwell County, W.Va., Mrs. Winecoff was a daughter of the late Leonard and Leona Fern Ratliff Reed. She was a 1943 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, W.Va.

A member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Church Women, she had retired in 1987 from R.W. Norman Drapery Co.

Survivors include husband, Ralph McKenzie Winecoff, whom she married April 20, 1957; and daughter BarbaraTrexler, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Wendell Phillips. Burial, Chestnut HillCemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the Parish House of the church. At other times the family will be at the home.

Jerry Lee Yates

The funeral will be Tuesday for Jerry Lee Yates, 64, 1495 Miller Chapel Road, who died Saturday (July 8, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 9, 1936, in Rowan County, Mr. Yates, a son of the late Johnny Cicero and Ethel HartsoeYates, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He was a member of Landmark Church. A truck driver, he had retired in 1989 from Food Lion.

Survivors include wife Beulah St. Clair Yates; sons David and Terry Yates, both of Salisbury; daughters Linda Yates, Snow Camp, Kimberly Bassett, Rockwell, Lisa Hodgson, Salisbury, and Lori Thomas, Faith; brothers Charles Yates, China Grove, and John, Allen and Donald Yates, all of Salisbury; sisters Alene Turner, Elender Morgan and Virginia Davis, all of Salisbury, Doris Bradshaw, Rockwell, and Reba Dudney, Granite Quarry; 16 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Benny Hillard. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 today at the funeral home.

 

Cora Lee Truesdale Zaky

EAST SPENCER — Cora Lee Truesdale Zaky, 76, 603 Pinetree Drive, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after 18 months of declining health.

Born April 20, 1924, in Salisbury, Mrs. Zaky was a daughter of the late Jim and Carrie Truesdale. She was a graduate of J.C. Price High School and New York Business College.

She had retired as supervising clerk for Social Services in New York City. She had also worked as a clerk for Rowan County Department of Social Services, Salisbury, and for Josephine Mitchell Realty Co.

Survivors include nephew John Cole, Salisbury, reared in the home; nieces Phyllis Mason, Washington, D.C., and Diane Truesdale, St. Albans, N.Y., also reared in the home; and brother Jimmy Lee Truesdale, Detroit, Mich.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.
