Mary Hathcock Burnette
STANFIELD — Mary Ramelle “Mell” Hathcock Burnette, 79, 204 Union St., died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at her home.
A Stanly County native, she had retired as a bookkeeper at Cannon Mills, Kannapolis.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Stanfield Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland.
Ida Burton
RIMERTOWN — Ida Drake Burton, 86, 4701 Rimer Road, died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont, Albemarle.
Born March 3, 1914, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Burton was a daughter of the late Gussie Samuel and Lizzie Wilson Drake. She had retired from the washcloth department at Cannon Mills. She was a member of Centerview Baptist Church.
Her husband, C.E. Burton, died Oct. 31, 1974, and a son, James Robert Burton, died Nov. 10, 1983.
Survivors include daughter Ruth Burton Cruse, with whom she made her home; sister Eloise Lloyd, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. William W. Rash. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.
Visitation:6-8 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the Rimer Road home.

Cora Mae Newton Morgan
ALBEMARLE — Cora Mae Newton Morgan, 75, 520 East St., died Friday (July 7, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont.
Born Feb. 8, 1925, in Lumberton, Mrs. Morgan was a daughter of the late Lilly Pearl Britt Newton Cartrette and the late Finley A. Newton. A retired beautician, she was a member of Stony Hill United Methodist Church, where she had taught nursery, Sunday school and Bible school.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, John Daniel “J.D.” Morgan; daughters Karen M. Russell, Albemarle, and Yvonne M. Thompson, Charlotte; half brothers George Cartrette, Screven, Ga., Jackie Cartrette, Albemarle, Edgar Newton, Van Nuys, Calif., R.C. Newton, Midway, Ga., and Clyde Newton, Kannapolis; half sisters Georgia Umland, Phoenix, Ariz., Vivian Boggan, Mount Gilead, Carolyn Holt, Aberdeen, and Sandra “Cinda” Wrenn, Albemarle; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Stony Hill United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gary Ferrell. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Seth Palmer Gabriel
MOORESVILLE —Seth Palmer Gabriel, 88, formerly of 165 Cedar St., died Friday (July 7, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Oct. 1, 1911, in Iredell County, Mr. Gabriel was a son of the late Alexander M. and Frances Robinson Gabriel. Educated in the Mooresville schools, he was a clerk and rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years.
He served as president of the N.C. Rural Letter Carriers’ Association in 1969-70 and received the outstanding Carrier of the Year Award in 1985. He served as historian of the association for 14 years and assisted in writing its history from 1962 to 1985, for which he received an award of appreciation. He was a delegate to 44 state and 16 national conventions for the organization.
Mr. Gabriel served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II.
He served as first vice president of the Mooresville Jaycees, president of the Lions Club and secretary of the Dixie Investment Club. He was a former member of the Mooresville Area Community Chorus.
Mr. Gabriel was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville, where he served as treasurer, chairman of the finance committee, church school superintendent and teacher and lay leader. He served four terms on the administrative board. Methodist Man of the Year in 1979, he sang in the Chancel Choir for more than 50 years. He was a member of Kelly-Kipka Sunday School Class.
His wife, Elizabeth Sloop Gabriel, who died Sept. 19, 1992. They were married July 9, 1938.
Mr. Gabriel is survived by a sister, Virginia Thompson, Salisbury.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry and the Rev. Lory Beth Huffman. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Hugh Culverhouse Julian, 90, Salisbury, died Friday (July 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

RICHFIELD — Michael Eugene Kirk, 51, Richfield, died Saturday (July 8, 2000) in an automobile accident.

Henry Lee Morgan
The funeral will be Sunday for Henry Lee Morgan, 65, 905 Park Ave., who died Thursday (July 6, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1935, in Rowan County, Mr. Morgan was a son of the late Lena Barringer Morgan Slough and the late Clarence Henry Morgan. Educated in the Richfield schools, he had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon’s machine shop due to ill health. He was a member of West Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife Frances Jane Hill Morgan; sons Gary Wayne and Billy Ray Morgan, both of China Grove; and four grandchildren.

COOLEEMEE — The funeral is today for Raymond Thomas Sandora, Cooleemee, who died Monday (July 3, 2000) at his home after a period of declining health.
Survivors include daughter Maria Rutter, Cooleemee; son Raymond Sandora, Cooleemee; and two grandchildren.

Roger Dale Thomas
KANNAPOLIS — Roger Dale Thomas, 54, 305 Bell St., died Friday (July 7, 2000)at his residence.
Born Aug. 22, 1945, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Thomas was a son of Frances Honeycutt Thomas, Kannapolis, and the late Dewey Jay Thomas. He was self-employed as a painter until his retirement in 1986 due to disability.
Survivors include wife Brenda Kerley Thomas; sons Roger Dale Thomas Jr. and Jack Thomas, both of Kannapolis; daughters Lucinda Thomas Steelman and Jessica Thomas, both of Kannapolis; sister Theresa Morris, Charlotte; half brother Billy Honeycutt, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lindsey Ferrell Wood
MOORESVILLE —Lindsey Ferrell Wood, 40, 225 Wood Ridge Drive, died Friday (July 7, 2000)at his home.
Born Oct. 29, 1959, in Rowan County, Mr. Wood was a son of Grady Hillard and Geraldine Bost Wood, both of Mooresville. A graduate of South Rowan High School, he was a truck driver for Food Lion. He was a lifetime member of Concordia Lutheran Church.
Survivor, in addition to his parents, include wife Francis Elizabeth Sloop Wood; daughter Mary Beth Wood, of the home; brother Grady Duane Wood, Kannapolis; sister April Wood Roberts, China Grove; and maternal grandmother Ruby Owens Bost, Mooresville.
