Catherine Blount Arthur

The funeral will be Sunday for Catherine Blount Arthur, 79, 844 Lincolnton Road, who died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at her home.

Born Aug. 6, 1920, in Florence, S.C., Mrs. Arthur was a daughter of the late Harry Anderson and Lena McCathren Blount. A graduate of Boyden High School and Mars Hill Junior College, she received a degree in education fromLongwood College, Farmville, Va.

A former teacher in the Rowan County school system, she later taught art at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for 16 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught children’s Sunday school for 23 years. Also a member of the Rowan County Art Guild, her art was exhibited in various galleries in North and South Carolina.

Survivors include husband Harry W. Arthur, whom she married June 28, 1941; sons Karl A. “Andy” Arthur and H. Mark Arthur, both of Salisbury; daughter Cynvia G. Arthur-Rankin, Shady Side, Md.; brother Harry A. Blount, Salisbury; sisters Sarah B. Powell, Richmond, Va., Ruth B. Fentress, Chevy Chase, Md., and Mary B. Hipp, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Dale Steele, interim pastor, and the Rev. Keith Flippin, pastor, First Baptist Church of Salisbury. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Ida Drake Burton

CONCORD — Ida Drake Burton, 86, 4701 Rimer Road, died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at Britthaven of Albemarle.

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

John Ray ‘Bill’ Grubb Jr.

John Ray “Bill” Grubb Jr., 79, 415 Fox Hollow Farm Road, died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at his home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

John Ira Harkey

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for John Ira Harkey, 85, Dare Street, who died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 4, 1915, in Iredell County, Mr. Harkey was a son of the late John David and Hope Estelle Austin Harkey. He was educated in the Iredell County schools.

Mr. Harkey had retired as a construction superintendent with Cabarrus Construction Co., Concord. He was a past president of the Landis Lions Club.

Survivors include son Roger Harkey,Charlotte; daughters Carol Harkey Yoder and Cindy Harkey Chambers, both of Landis; sister Mildred Harkey Overcash, Landis; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Stan Welch. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park, Concord.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Henry Lee Morgan

Henry Lee Morgan, 65, Salisbury, died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Mildred J. Smith Stewart

The funeral will be Saturday for Mildred J. Smith Stewart, 92, 234 Morrell Road, Knoxville,Tenn., formerly of Faith Road, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (July 4, 2000) at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville.

Born July 12, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Charles and Lydia Elsasser Smith. She was educated in the Brooklyn schools.

A homemaker, she was a member of Assembly of God Church, where her late husband served as pastor. She was a former member of the Salisbury Doll Club.

Her husband, the Rev. Charles F. Stewart Jr., died Oct. 23, 1988. Daughter Naomi M. Stewart died Jan. 27, 1960, and daughter Beulah R. Stewart died Jan. 20, 1992.

Survivors include son John W. Stewart, Knoxville,Tenn.; daughter Priscilla Petzold, Salisbury; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Dewey Thomas

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Dewey Jay Thomas, 72, 1011 Brookdale St., who died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 26, 1927, in Leaksville, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Roy Edgar and Irma Lee Armstrong Thomas. He had worked as a contract painter.

Survivors include daughter Theresa Thomas Morris, Charlotte; son Roger Dale Thomas, Kannapolis; sisters Joan Thomas Ragan and Lylan Thomas Beam, both of Kannapolis, Hazel Thomas Leatherman, Toronto, Kan., and Faith Thomas Amspaugh, Vancleve, Ky.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. T. Edwin Luther and the Rev. Buddy Boone. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Joan Ragan, 2205 Clay St.

Bertie Earnhardt Vanhoy

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Bertie “Grandma Bert” Earnhardt Vanhoy, 67, Rockwell, who died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at Blount Memorial Hospital, Maryville,Tenn.

Born July 23, 1932, in Rowan County, Mrs. Vanhoy was a daughter of the late George M. and Margaret Kluttz Earnhardt. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had retired in 1975 from Cannon Mills, Plant 11.

A member of Rockwell Foursquare Church, she was a deaconess and a member of the women’s group and the choir. She was also a member of Rowan Ramblers.

Survivors include husband Burton M. “June” Vanhoy, whom she married Oct. 24, 1949; sons Rick Vanhoy, Salisbury, and Ben and Tim Vanhoy, both of Rockwell; daughters Sis Morefield, Salisbury, and Tina Davis, Rockwell; and 11 grandchildren.

Services: 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Rockwell Foursquare Church, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Manns and George Kluttz, her uncle. The body will be placed in the church at 4. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home in Rockwell.
