Catherine Blount Arthur

Catherine Blunt Arthur, 79, 844 Lincolnton Road, died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at her home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Hattie Barbee Austin

ALBEMARLE — Hattie Geneva Barbee Austin, 95, 20553-A Highway 52, died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at her home.

Born Nov. 11, 1904, in Stanly County, Mrs. Austin was a daughter of the late Seymore and Laura Smith Barbee. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church.

Her husband, William Carl Austin, died June 7, 1971. A daughter, Juanita Austin Blake, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Eunice Austin Swaringen and Sylvia Austin Smith, both of Albemarle; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday,Union Chapel UnitedMethodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curran Welch, the Rev. Martha Welch, the Rev. Jim Faggart and the Rev. Mickey Moree. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

 

Boyce Albert Cox

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Saturday for Boyce Albert Cox, 67, 305 Haven Trail, who died Monday (July 3, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 6, 1932, in Rowan County, Mr. Cox was a son of the late Roscoe Lindsey and Ethel Mae Bostian Cox. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a member of South China Grove Baptist Church. He had retired due to ill health in 1982 from China Grove Cotton Mills.

Survivors include wife Virginia Mae Cottingham Cox; sons Jimmy Brown and Boyce Cox Jr., both of China Grove; daughters Theresa Jenkins, China Grove, and Donna Russell, Supply; brother Henry Cox, China Grove; sister Kibie Kennedy, Mount Pleasant; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams. Burial will be private.

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

John Ira Harkey

LANDIS —John Ira Harkey, 85, formerly of 208 S. Kimmons St., died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Center, Salisbury.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, is in charge.

 

Claudie Hinson

ALBEMARLE — Claudie Hinson, 85, 116 Burleson St., died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at the Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Born Sept. 6, 1914, in Stanly County, Mr. Hinson was a son of the late D. Luther and Emma Burleson Hinson. Retired as a carpet machine operator with Tow-Due Inc., he was a member of Poplin Grove Baptist Church.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he received four Battle Stars for his service in the European theater during World War II.

Survivors include wife Virginia Aline Morton Hinson; and son Gene Hinson, Albemarle.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Farrell Shimpock. Burial, Poplin Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Military rites by Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Burleson Street.

 

Paul David Shaffer

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Paul David Shaffer, 58, Rockwell, who died Tuesday (July 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a month of serious illness.

Born May 12, 1942, in Princeton, W.Va., Mr. Shaffer was a son of the late Frank Keller and Bessie Mae Pettrey Shaffer. He was educated at Princeton High School, Princeton, W.Va. He had retired from the maintenance department at Wall Industries.

His wife, Jacqueline Ritt Shaffer, died May 20, 1990.

Survivors include daughter Annette Shaffer, Rockwell; caregiver Roger Frye, of the home; stepsons Jack and Johnny Kossick, both of Port Charlotte, Fla.; stepdaughters Pamela Bernerd, Cinnaminson, N.J., and Colleen Kossick, Port Charlotte, Fla.; brothers Robert Shaffer, Rockwell, and Jerry Shaffer, Charleston, W.Va.; sisters Ruth S. Walker, Dundalk, Md., and Barbara Engi, Bordentown, N.J.; two grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Lewis Hall, pastor, Rockwell Church of God. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: Noon-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Barbara Weldon Simmons

Barbara Weldon Simmons, Chicago, a Rowan County native, died Saturday (July 1, 2000).

Mrs. Simmons was a daughter of the late Elzer Van and Lossie Slade Weldon.

Services will be held Friday in Chicago.

Wayne Steve Snipes

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Wayne Steve Snipes, 55, 113 Brookshire Ave., who died Tuesday (July 4, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 1, 1945, in Key West, Fla., Mr. Snipes was a son of Edith Nottage Snipes, Concord, and the late Edward J. Snipes. Employed by Southeastern Freight, Charlotte, he had earlier worked for Southern Wholesale, also inCharlotte.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Mary Jo Hix Snipes; daughter Lauren Holland, Southern Pines; sons Bryan and Joel Snipes, both of Charlotte; brother Edward C. Snipes, Kannapolis; and three grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 5 p.m. Friday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke Ritchie.

Visitation: 4-5 p.m. Friday in the church parlor. At other times the family will be at the home on Brookshire Avenue.

Mildred J.Smith Stewart

Mildred J. Smith Stewart, 92, 234 Morrell Road, Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Faith Road, Salisbury, died Tuesday (July 4, 2000) at Fort Sanders Park-West Hospital, Knoxville, Tenn.

KANNAPOLIS — Dewey Jay Thomas, 72, 1011 Brookdale St., died Thursday (July 6, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

ROCKWELL — Bertie E. “Grandma Bert” Vanhoy, 67, Rockwell, died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) in Maryville, Tenn.

Mary Davidson White

MOORESVILLE — Mary Davidson White, 92, formerly of 126 Bob White Lane, died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at Spring Dale Health Care, Camden, S.C.

Born Aug. 18, 1907, in Iredell County, Mrs. White was a daughter of the late George T. and Geneva Reid Davidson. She had made her home with her daughter, Betty Blackwell, in Camden, S.C., for the past seven years.

Her husband, Robert A. White, died in 1973.

Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include sons Vance Reid and George Maxton White, both of Concord; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Fair View United Methodist Church, Mount Mourne, conducted by the Rev. James T. Martin and the Rev. David Christy. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Otis Ervin Williams

NEW LONDON — Otis Ervin Williams, 45, 46456 Martin Road, died Monday (July 3, 2000) at his home.

Born Sept. 29, 1954, in Stanly County, Mr. Williams was a son of Alice Pennington Williams, New London, and the late Andrew Williams.

He was a graduate of North Stanly High School and a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed by Fiber Composite.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Gloria McRae Williams, Concord; son Reginald A. Williams, of the home; daughter Shantane R. Williams, of the home; brothers Andrew V. Williams, Oceanside, Calif., and Ernest Williams, Wadesboro; and sisters Millie Hunt and Deborah Peoples, both of New London, and Mary E. Lewis, Los Angeles, Calif.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald J. Carpenter, pastor, and Roger Williams. Burial, Oakview Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Billy Joe Williams

ALBEMARLE — Billy Joe Williams, 71, 915 Bost St., died Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at Stanly Manor.

BornFeb. 22, 1929, in Marlboro County, S.C., Mr. Williams was a son of the late Thomas Henry and Cora Mae Parker Williams. He had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon as a supervisor in bedspread operations. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Carolyn Hester Williams; son Billy Joe Williams Jr.,Oakboro; daughters Tanya Williams Burgess and Kristi Williams Humphrey, both of Albemarle, and Lydia Williams Smith, Norwood; sisters Louise W. Morris, Agnes W. Napier and Ona W. Thomas, all of Albemarle; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, North Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Grady Taylor and the Rev. Wyman Bolin. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Bost Street.
