Bertie Crowe Cole Cress

GOLD HILL — Bertie Crowe Cole Cress, 88, of Gold Hill, died Sunday (July 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after several years of declining health and one week of serious illness.

Born April 21, 1912, in Pickinens County, Ga., Mrs. Cress was a daughter of the late Arie Moody and John M. Crowe. Retired from China Grove Textiles, she was a Baptist.

Mrs. Cress was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Cress, and a son Dennis “Sonny” Cole Jr., who died April 16, 1999.

Survivors include Jean Barringer, China Grove; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. today, Gold Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Billy Ervin.

Visitation: Prior to the graveside service. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter-in-law, Ruby Cole, Gold Hill, before the service.

Memorials: Gold Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O.Box 72, Gold Hill, N.C. 28071.

Lindsay Flint

MOCKSVILLE — Lindsay Flint, 95, of U.S. Highway 601 South, died Sunday (July 2, 2000) at his residence after a period of declining health.

He was a lifelong resident of Davie County, a retiree of Burlington Cotton Mills, and a member of Fairfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Kathalean D. Flint, of the home; daughters Addie Bell, Lula Foote, Zelda Naylor, Betty Frost and Rachel Carson, all of Mocksville, and Mildred Blackwell, Salisbury; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Fairfield Baptist Church, Davie County, conducted by the Rev. Marcus Williams. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: The body will be at the church at 1 p.m. Thursday. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Graham Funeral Home of Mocksville is in charge of arrangements.

 

George M. Hall

George M. Hall, 86, of Salisbury, died Sunday (July 2, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Hayden Lamont Long

CONCORD — Hayden Lamont Long, 81, 4201 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, died Sunday (July 2, 2000) at Eden Gardens.

Born Feb. 8, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Long was a son of the late Wilbern Smith and Bessie Earnhardt Long. Mr. Long was a retired loom fixer at Cannon Mills Company. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 5th Army Battery D, 432 AAA Battalion and earned five bronze service stars. He was a member of New Gilead Reformed United Church of Christ, where he was a former deacon. Mr. Long was an insurance agent and a director for Cabarrus Mutual Insurance Company for 30 years. He was also a carpenter and a farmer.

Survivors include wife Margorie Eagle Long, of the home; brother James L. Long, Concord; sisters Myrtle Bostic and Kathleen L. Ritch, both of Kannapolis.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, New Gilead Reformed United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Bolick. Burial, church cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by D.A.V., Chapter 27.

Visitation: 6:30-8:00 tonight, at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: New Gilead Reformed United Church of Christ, 2400 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, Concord, N.C. 28025.

 

Ermine Shivers Mitchell

Ermine Shivers Mitchell, 91, 728 Klumac Road, died Saturday (July 1, 2000) at Carillon Assisted Living of Salisbury.

Born Jan. 1, 1909, in Salisbury, Mrs. Mitchell was a daughter of the late Nellie Linker Aldred and Walter Shivers. A graduate from Salisbury High School, she was one of the first students to register at Catawba College when the school was relocated to the Salisbury campus. Mrs. Mitchell was a retired chief operator with Southern Bell Telephone Company and was a former member and past president of the Piedmont Council Telephone Pioneers. She also was a former member and past president of the Altrusa Club. A charter member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, she was a member of the Lutheran Church Women and past president of the Church Women. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph Edmond Mitchell, who died Feb. 19, 1990.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John B. Tucker. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, 4201 N. Main St., Columbia, S.C. 29203.

 

Helen Whisenhunt

LEXINGTON — Helen Miller Whisenhunt, 93, North Willow Heaven Road, Durham, died Sunday (July 2, 2000) at her home, after seven months of illness.

Born Jan. 15, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Whisenhunt was a daughter of the late Cornelia Sloop and Eli Scott Miller. She was a retired school teacher with the state of North Carolina and a graduate of Catawba College. She was a member of Memorial United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Roy C. Whisenhunt.

Survivors include son Andy Whisenhunt, Durham; sister Doris M. Gross, Aberdeen, and Lilyan M. Stafford, of Charlotte.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Memorial United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Don Leonard and the Rev. Dick Cheek. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: Memorial United Church of Christ, 3806 E. Old Highway 64, Lexington, N.C. 27292.

 

Minnie Crosby Young

Minnie Crosby Young, 104, 1216 West Bank St., died Thursday (June 29, 2000) at Brian Nursing Center.

Born July 5, 1895, in Fairfield, S.C., Mrs. Young was a daughter of the late Nancy Robinson and Berry Crosby. Educated in Fairfield public schools, she was a housewife and a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Blair, S.C. In recent years she attended Hassion Baptist Church, Blair, S.C., where she was a member of the usher board and choir.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband, Plummer Young; sons Will and Wallace Young; and daughter Mary Jane Young.

Survivors include sons John, Donald and Doby Young, all of Blair, S.C., Joe Young, Concord, Plummer Young, Spartanburg, S.C., Fate Young, Rosemond, Calif., and Ernest Young, Newark, N.J.; daughters Minnie Young Byrd, of the home, Ruby Phillips, Los Angeles, Calif., and Doris Jackson; sisters Sara Essie Williams, Columbia, S.C. and Claudia Williamson, Chester, S.C.; 61 grandchildren; 119 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hassion Baptist Church, Blair, S.C. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury.
