Rev. Joe Hartsell King

The Rev. Joe Hartsell King, 74, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after a period of declining health.

Born June 5, 1925, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Robert Floyd and Annie Bell Childress King. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools and Wingate College, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War ll in the European and Asian theaters. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a life member of the Pee Dee Masonic Lodge 150 in Norwood. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies.

Survivors include wife Bonnie Goodman King; sons Joe Allen King, Oakboro, Dale O. King, Richfield, and Phillip D. Jeffers, Gastonia; daughters Linda Beck, High Point, and Yevonne Stallings, Spencer; brothers Hester King, Concord, Fred King, Midland, Floyd King, Monroe, and J. C. King, Baltimore, Md.; sisters Ollie Mae Morgan,Midland and Christine Cline, Mount Pleasant; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, James C. Lyerly Chapel of Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jessie Dennis, pastor of Paul’s Crossing Baptist Church,Richfield. Burial in Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell, with military rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

April Mills-Dodd

April Joylachell Mills-Dodd, 25, of 1006 S. Fulton St., died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at her home after a serious illness of several months.

Born April 1, 1974, in Charlotte, she was a daughter of Joeleslie Mills Allison of Salisbury and the late George Scarborough. Last employed by Burger King, she had previously attended Antioch Baptist Church in Granite Quarry. She was a graduate of Carl D. Perkins High School in Prestoburg, Ky. and attended Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Survivors in addition to her mother include stepfather John Allison; husband William E. Dodd Jr.; brothers Robert Dalton,Charlotte and George Scarborough,Seattle, Wash; sisters Crystal Mills, Monita Little, Joquetta Allison and Johnnikka Allison, all of Salisbury, and Cheryl Hollis and Patricia Stevenson, both of Charlotte.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Howard W. Brown

GRANITE QUARRY — Howard W. Brown, 78, Granite Quarry, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell is in charge.

 

Nora Crisco Chandler

NEW LONDON — Nora Crisco Chandler, 88, 40583 Tower Road, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born April 26, 1911, in Union County, Mrs. Chandler was a daughter of the late Charlie Conrad and Mary Ellen Harrington Crisco. Retired from Wiscassett Mill Co., she was a member of Highland Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Taft Chandler, who died Dec. 10, 1975, and a son, Melvin Elwood Chandler.

Survivors include son Darriell Wayne Chandler, New London; daughters Gwendolyn C. Burris, Elsie C. Carter and Doris C. Kimrey, all of New London; brother Floyd Crisco, Albemarle; 13 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Donnie Treadway. Burial, Highland Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Elsie C. Carter, 44012 N.C. 740 Hwy.

 

William E. Clawson

WOODLEAF — William E. Clawson, 84, 10080 Cool Springs Road, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

 

Jean Marshall Eisinger

EAST SPENCER — Jean Beverly Marshall Eisinger, 50, East Spencer, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a period of declining health.

Born June 15, 1949, in Syracuse, N.Y., Mrs. Eisinger was a daughter of Beverly Schafer Marshall, Lafayette, N.Y., and the late Daniel Marshall. Educated at Lafayette High School, Lafayette, N.Y., she was employed in retail sales with several New York department stores.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include son Roger W. Eisinger, Salisbury; daughter Michelle Marie Riley and Patricia Ann Patchin, both of Salisbury; sisters Debbie Curtis, Casanova, N.Y., and Karen King, Syracuse, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Vallie S. Hannah

Vallie S. Hannah, 86, Salisbury, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Helen Carver Kepley

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Helen Carver Kepley, 87, Big Elm Nursing Center, formerly of Salisbury, who died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after six months of declining health.

Born Jan. 8, 1913, in Cherokee County, Mrs. Kepley was a daughter of the late Lewis Hampton and Minnie Weaver Carver. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker. She had formerly worked at Norman’s and Granite Knitwear as a seamstress. A member of Rowan Christian Assembly, she attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Golden Age Sunday school class, WELCA and Seasoned Saints.

Survivors include sons Raymond Lewis Kepley, Salisbury, Harry Lee Kepley, Gloustor Point, Va., and Larry Wayne Kepley, Terrell; sister Joan Page, Aurora, Colo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Stan Welch, pastor, Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, Kannapolis. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Raymond Lewis Kepley, Salisbury.

Willie ‘Bill’ Peeler

GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral will be Tuesday for Willie May “Bill” West Peeler, 87, formerly of Granite Quarry, who died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Born June 14, 1912, in Cleveland, Tenn., Mrs. Peeler was a daughter of the late Fred J. and Lula Augusta Leach West. She was a graduate of High Point High School. A homemaker, she had worked at Carolina Maid, B.B. Walkers Shoe Co. and Granite Quarry Cleaners. She was a member of St. Lukes United Church of Christ, the Women’s Guild and Granite Quarry Senior Citizens Club.

Her husband, Carr Andrew Peeler, died Feb. 1, 1980.

Survivors include sons Carr A. Peeler Jr., Robert “Bob” Peeler and John F. Peeler, all of Salisbury, David C. Peeler, Greensboro, and Patrick J. Peeler, Rockwell; daughter Vivian Vess, Rockwell; brother Fred J. West Jr., Barnesville, Ga.; sisters Sarah Agnes Betts, Barnesville, Ga., and Joy Bowden, Auburn, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Lukes United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Douglas K. McLemore. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the home of son Carr A. Peeler Jr. of Salisbury.

Joan H. Richardson

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Tuesday for Joan H. Richardson, 49, Mendota Avenue, who died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at High Point Regional Hospital after an extended illness and four months of serious illness.

Born April 7, 1950, in Warren County, Mrs. Richardson was a daughter of Marindia Alston Harris, of the home, and the late Forest Maryland Harris. A high school graduate, she was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Macon.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include son Eric Leon Richardson, Greensboro; brothers Danny Harris, Salisbury, and Darrell, Quintin, Rommie and Kenneth Harris, all of Lexington; and sisters Marindia Bennett, Juanita Taylor, Doris Davis and Carol Vickers, all of Lexington.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Union Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kevin Gibson and the Rev. H.B. Waiters. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

 

George Frank Shackelford

The funeral will be Tuesday for George Frank Shackelford, 89, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at his home.

Born Sept. 28, 1910, in Oklahoma City, Okla., Mr. Shackelford was a son of the late T.W. and Lydia Lee Shackelford. In 1934, he was a member of the first graduating class of Jones Law School, Montgomery, Ala. He had also been a student at the University of Alabama. The former manager at Emory Pipe and Foundry Co., he served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

His wife, Mary Elizabeth Strebile Shackelford, died Jan. 6, 1976.

Survivors include daughter Barbara Ann S. Harrell, Gulfport, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. Clements, pastor, Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Visitation: 1-1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.

 

Marvin Richard Turner

LANDIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Marvin Richard Turner, 82, Landis, who died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 8, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Turner was a son of the late Lester Levador and Margaret Emily Swink Turner. He attended the Rowan County schools.

He retired at the age of 62 from City Tin Shop of Landis, which he founded in 1949. Before he opened his business, he had worked at N.C. Shipbuilding Co., Wilmington, and as a roofer for K.W. Arthur and Sons of Salisbury. Since retirement, he had became an independent roofing consultant for Rowan County Schools and Catawba College.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Rowan Shrine Club and Oasis Temple AAONMS of Charlotte. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry S.J., USA in Charlotte and Eureka Lodge 283 of China Grove.

His wife, Julia Luzette Mills Turner, whom he married July 4, 1936, died July 17, 1999.

Survivors include daughter Pamella T. Martin, Landis; sister Louise T. Thomas, Spencer; and one granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Graham Nahouse. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Funeral services for Christopher Cooper and Davidson County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Todd Cook have been changed because of weather.

Services for Cooper, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, were re-scheduled for today at 4 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Darrell Cartrette will conduct the service, with burial in the church cemetery.

Services for Cook, first scheduled for today at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, have been moved to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Wayne Knight, the Rev. Henry Cook and the Rev. Bill Watson officiating. Burial will be at Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery in Winston-Salem. Visitation is not scheduled for 6 to 9 Tuesday night at Sechrest Funeral Home, also known as Family Funeral Care, at 18 Randolph St., Thomasville.
