Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Sept. 22, 1932 inRowan County, Mrs. Bates was
a daughter of the late Vallie Poole and William Henry Wilson.
Survivors include her husband, C.H. Bates Jr.;
brothers Paul T. and W.H. Wilson, both of Salisbury, and Grady Wilson, Carrollton, Texas.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, First Reformed United
Church of Christ, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Mike Hooper. Burial, Lexington City
Cemetery.

Robert Cecil Lyerly
WILMINGTON Robert Cecil Lyerly, 83, died
Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at Mariner Health.
Born Jan. 27, 1917 in Granite Quarry, Mr. Lyerly
was the son of the late Robert Lee and Viola Lingle Lyerly.
Mr. Lyerly graduated from Davidson College in
1936. He owned and operated Carolina Cake Company in Concord, N.C. for many years. Since
1976 he resided at Carolina Beach.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Smith
Lyerly.
Survivors include sons Robert Thomas Lyerly,
Wylie, Texas; Robert Richard Lyerly, Carolina Beach; daughter Suzanne Reed, Greenville,
S.C., sister Rebecca Britt, Salisbury; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Cemetery, Concord.

LANDIS Lillian Beaver Kelly, 92, 1202
Poplar St., died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at Big Elm Nursing Center, Kannapolis.
Born Aug. 6, 1907, in Rowan County, she was the
daughter of the late Molly Sells Beaver and Paul Edward Beaver.
Educated in Rowan County Schools, she was a
homemaker. Mrs. Kelly was a member of First Reformed Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred
Kelly, who died Feb. 22, 1987, and a son, Thomas Edward Kelly.
Survivors include son Paul W. Butch
Kelly, Kannapolis; daughters Jeri Lee, Landis, and Pat Weddington, Rockingham; sister
Marie Fink, Landis; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Blanche Hurd Morison
Blanche Hurd Morison, 88, of Salisbury, died
Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1911, in Kent County, Md., Mrs.
Morison was the daughter of the late Jeannette DeShong Hurd and Jesse J. Hurd.
Mrs. Morison was educated in Kent County Schools
and Western Maryland College in Westminister, Md. She taught school and was a social
worker.
Mrs. Morison was a member of St. Lukes
Episcopal Church and formerly served on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the
Lisons Book Club, and volunteered for the American Red Cross, the Friendship House
and at RRMC. She also delivered Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include her husband, Roland Watts
Morison, whom she married Nov. 15, 1933; daughters Jeannette M. Ketner, Salisbury, and
Polly M. Bak, Vancover, Canada; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Monday, St. Lukes Episcopal
Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern.
Visitation: Following the service in the St. Agnes
Room of the church and other times at the residence.

WINTER PARK, Fla. Dewey Edwin Norris, 80,
Amsden Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000).
He was born in Greensboro and moved to Central
Florida in 1959. He was a member of Aloma United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores Norris; sons
Jeffrey Norris, Orlando, Fla., and James Edwin Norris, Deltona, Fla.; daughter Debi Norris
Jester, Winter Park; sisters Myrtle Poplin, Charlotte, and Mae Watson, Salisbury; and
eight grandchildren.

Born Aug. 24, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr.
ONeal was a son of that late David and Ruth ONeal Beaver. A truck driver for
27 years, Mr. ONeal was a member of the Salvation Army.

Born Dec. 12, 1908 in Cabarrus County, Mrs.
Patterson was the daughter of the late A.S. Cook and Lora Cook.
Her husband, Vance L. Patterson, and daughter Sue
Patterson preceded her in death.
Mrs. Patterson was retired from Cannon Mills. She
was a member of Keller United Church of Christ, a Northeast medical volunteer and taught
Sunday School for many years.
Survivors include sister Robbie Brumbles, Concord;
brother Marvin Cook, Kannapolis; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Sophia Beck Weant
COLLEGE DALE, Tenn. Sophia Jane Beck Weant,
91, formerly of Spencer, died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000), at Life Care Center.
Born June 24, 1908 in Rowan County, Mrs.Weant was
the daughter of the late Ida Bell Brewer Beck and William Lewis Beck.
Educated in Rowan County Schools, Mrs. Weant and
her husband, Luther Weant, who preceded her in death, owned and operated Weants
Florist in Spencer for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Weant was a charter member of Oakdale Baptist
Church, taught Sunday School and was active in the Honor Sunday School class, the Fannie
Green Prayer Group, the W.A.O. and the Retired Citizens Club.
She was past president of the W.M.U. and past
president of the Spencer Womens Club. In 1970 she received a silver bowl for being
selected Woman of the Year. She was past president and current vice president of Yadkin
House Key Club and a member of the Yadkin House Prayer Group and Sunday School.
Survivors include son Jack Weant, Nebo; daughter
Nancy Wyatt, Chattanooga, Tenn.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Oakdale Baptist Church,
Spencer, conducted by the Rev. Robert Heard. The body will be placed in the church 30
minutes before.
