West rips Wonders

012900b.jpg (16354 bytes)KANNAPOLIS — A West Rowan defense so often lost in the team’s offensive brilliance took over Friday night.

The Falcons romped to an 81-44 win at Kannapolis behind an intense full-court press and half-court trap that keyed a 23-4 run in the second quarter of the 3A South Piedmont Conference matchup.

Horatio Everhart and Scooter Dalton paced the frenzied attack in the second quarter and helped senior leader Scooter Sherrill bring down the house with eight consecutive West points. The Wonders (4-13 overall, 2-9 SPC) trailed 17-10 early in the second quarter before West post players Frankie Williams and Donte Minter scored six straight.

Then the defense exerted itself.

The Falcons (18-1, 12-0) stole one pass in the back court and fed Sherrill for a finger roll. Next possession, Sherrill grabbed a pass off a steal, maneuvered around a Wonder and banked in another easy layup.

Timeout Wonders.

Kannapolis managed only to pause the press, though, as the next time down the court, Everhart came up with a steal and fed the wide-open Sherrill for a reverse slam. He got fewer style points seconds later on yet another steal and another layin, but the surge had West up 31-12.

“Our defense in the second quarter is what we’re trying to achieve,” West head coach Mike Gurley said. “That was five guys working extremely hard at the press that resulted in Scooter’s scores.”

Before the half closed, West scored nine more points and led 40-17 at the break.

“They do such a good job trapping, they’re very athletic,” Wonders head coach Shelwyn Klutz said. “We don’t have the experience to handle that kind of pressure.”

That’s something Gurley realizes, and with players like Dalton and Everhart to turn loose, the Falcons are eager to exploit those kinds of matchups.

“Coach just told us to trap the first pass, watch the ball and use your speed,” Everhart said. “We did that and it paid off.”

West’s big lead came in handy at the start of the third quarter. Kannapolis roared out of the locker room with the first eight points of the half to pull within 40-25 on Aundrae Allison’s pullup jumper.

Two turnovers and a blocked shot gave the Wonders three easy scores in that run and left Gurley frustrated on the sidelines.

“It was extremely cold in the locker room and we came out quick from halftime because we wanted to get out of there,” Gurley said. “Maybe that got us flat, but then again, I’d like to think that Kannapolis came out and really made us work.”

Luckily for the Falcons, Gurley knew exactly what buttons to push on the bench. In came Everhart, who sat to start the half because of a sore thumb, and in came Brandon White.

The moves paid dividends immediately. White hit two free throws, Everhart drained a 3 and White scored four more points to put the Falcons back up 49-32. West led 60-40 after three quarters and had no trouble in the fourth. Kannapolis struggled with 2-for-15 shooting and scored only six points in the final eight minutes, while the Falcons’ reserves starred with a 21-point effort.

“They just made us panic tonight,” Klutz said. “Our goal was to keep the ball six or seven passes, keep the ball out of their hands. They did a good job of pressuring and causing turnovers.”

NOTES: Everhart didn’t limit his starring role to the defensive end. He opened the game with two 3-pointers and finished with 14. “Horatio got us started in this one,” Gurley said. “He knocked down those two 3s and got us in a good playing mood.” … Adding to Kannapolis’ woes was the foul trouble plaguing Gerrell McCrae. The center scored seven first-half points but picked up his fourth foul with 4:06 left in the third quarter and finished with 11. With him on the bench, West’s frontline dominated behind Donte Minter (13 points, 10 rebounds), Williams (eight points, five boards) and White (five points, six rebounds).
