Efird files again for Kannapolis board

BY JESSIE BURCHETTE
SALISBURY POST

The chairman of the Kannapolis Board of Education for the past six years has filed for re-election.

Lee Efird, 45, of Moose Road filed for the Rowan seat that will be decided in the May 7 non-partisan election.

Efird has been elected twice previously to the seat.

Although he previously leaned toward not running, Efird said today that with the board losing two members, he opted to seek a third term.

The two vacancies will occur in the two Cabarrus seats. Linda Johnson, an incumbent, has filed for the 80th N.C. House District.

Bob Query, who was elected twice to one of the Cabarrus seats, moved into the Rowan side of Kannapolis. If Query decides to run, he would have to challenge Efird for the Rowan seat.

Bob Boswell, a former football coach at A.L. Brown, filed earlier this week for one of the Cabarrus seats.

Efird said today that there have been a lot of accomplishments during the past several years and he wants to see that trend continue.

“I feel like that I have something to offer,” said Efird.

First elected in 1992, he served two years as vice chairman before becoming chairman.

He has led the board through major facility projects including building Forest Park Elementary, a new wing on Kannapolis Middle School, and addition of the Cyber Campus at A.L. Brown High School.

Efird noted that using Rowan school bond monies, they were able to build a science wing at the high school and make major additions at Woodrow Wilson Elementary.

During the past few years the board has overseen efforts to realign the curriculum, move the sixth-graders to the middle school and improve academics.

Efird credited staff, students and parents for the overall upward trend in test scores.

Efird is in real estate and construction with R.D. Efird Realty of Kannapolis.

He and his wife, Lynn, have three children, Brian, a student at UNCC; Tracy, a student at Campbell University; and Kristen, a senior at A.L. Brown High School.
