Volunteers always needed

SALISBURY POST

Ninety-one-year-old Myrtle Sharpe didn’t get hungry when her hot meal didn’t arrive for three days.

But she “sure was happy” to see Eddie Fulcher when he came Thursday morning.

She was sound asleep when Fulcher knocked on the door.

Fixing breakfast took all her energy, so she laid down for a nap.

And she’s still just worn out from trying to rake the snow off her patio. “I was so sore I couldn’t get up and down for nearly two days.”

Sharpe, who lives on North Main Street in Kannapolis, made do with some canned stuff early this week. But it wasn’t the same as the hot meals she’s come to depend on.

“You know they’re good balanced meals with lots of vitamins,” she said.

She’s listening to the weather predictions and getting a little worried about the forecast of another storm.

“I pray the Lord don’t send any more snow,” she said. Whatever comes, she’s staying in with her two cats, Tabby and Blackie, and watching the traffic go by on the busy street. “I’ve had a good happy life and that’s it.”

Sharpe’s house was just one of the stops on Fulcher’s route.

The retired Kannapolis resident also serves on the board of directors for Meals on Wheels.

Retired from Fieldcrest Cannon, Fulcher thought long and hard about volunteering. “I debated on it for two months before I did it.”

He is in his fourth year with Meal on Wheels, working primarily in the South Rowan area. He has no regrets. “God blessed me. I felt I should do something to pass on the blessings to others.”

Sharpe is one of several 90-plus women on his route. Fulcher enjoys the stops, although it’s a struggle at times to communicate. Most have difficulty hearing and keep the televisions going full blast.

“They know we’re coming, so they just unlock the door,” said Fulcher.

Volunteers deliver about 10 meals on each route.

In addition to delivering meals, Fulcher is trying to recruit volunteers.

More volunteers are needed for existing routes and Fulcher said there are a lot of elderly residents who could benefit from hot meals, if the program had more volunteers. “We have needs in Enochville, in Atwell, Locke, Bostian Heights, on N.C. 152 West of China Grove,” said Fulcher, adding, “As the populating ages, there’s a lot more needs. This program helps keep some people out of nursing homes.”

He invites anyone interested in volunteering to ride with him or other volunteers and see what it is like.
