Helen Burris Dennis

ALBEMARLE — Helen Marie Burris Dennis, 68, 1505 Lee Lynn Drive, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

BornMarch 27, 1931, in Stanly County, Mrs. Dennis was a daughter of the late Oscar and Flora Belle Furr Burris. A Wal-Mart greeter, she was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and Three Rivers Quilt Club. She did volunteer work with Cub Scout Pack 50.

Her husband, James Julius “Hoss” Dennis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Jerry James Dennis, Albemarle; daughters Linda Hilton, Rock Hill, S.C., Lois Roland and Judy Fraley, both of New London, Veronica Ingram, Norwood, Doris Davis, Round Rock, Texas, and Tammy Dennis, Albemarle; brothers Lewis Burris, New London, and Ted Burris, Concord; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Mountain View Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Huneycutt, the Rev. Steve Tucker and the Rev. David E. Howard. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory. Visitation was Thursday night.

The family will be at the fellowship hall of the church.

Hartsell Funeral Home is in charge.

David Franklin Elliott

The funeral will be today for David Franklin Elliott, 75, 1260 E. Ridge Road, who died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at his home.

Born Jan. 13, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Elliott was a son of the late David Franklin and Pearl Cauble Elliott. A graduate of Spencer High School, he had retired from Home Oil Co. in 1987. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include wife Vera Thomason Elliott, whom he married May 22, 1948; son David Steven Elliott, Salisbury; daughter Cynthia Diane Elliott, Hendersonville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 today, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Carroll Poole.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Thomas Russell Fitzgerald

KANNAPOLIS — Thomas Russell Fitzgerald, age 4, 1604 Heather Glen Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at the University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, of complications after a bone marrow transplant.

Gloria Plott Hager

LANDIS —Gloria Plott Hager, 70, 455 Old Shallowford Bridge Road, Sunset, S.C., died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at her residence after six years of declining health. She was a former Landis resident.

Born Feb. 10, 1929, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Hager was a daughter of the late Ila McAnulty and Claude O. Plott. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, Mrs. Hager attended Appalachian College.

She was formerly employed in the supply room at Linn Mill (Dominion Yarn). She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Landis.

Her husband, Owen A. Hager, died Jan. 6, 1989.

Survivors include son Alex Hager, Tallahassee, Fla.; daughter Dawn Hager Atwell, Sunset, S.C.; brother Dean Plott, Fleetwood; sister Vicki Plott Dail, Greenboro; and four grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Saturday, Colonial Chapel of Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Brian Atwell. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:2-3 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

Trudy Oliver Jacobs

BADIN — Trudy Mae Oliver Jacobs, 78, 32741 Highway 740, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born July 21, 1921, in Chesterfield, S.C., Mrs. Jacobs was a daughter of the late William Patterson and Florence Elizabeth Oliver. She was a homemaker and a member of Badin Baptist Church.

Her husband, Elbrus “Jake”Jacobs, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Randy Jacobs, Badin; sisters Grace O. Culp, Badin, and Beatrice “Betty” Ratliff, Ruby, S.C.; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services: 1 today, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Dan Abernathy and the Rev. Claud Dick. Burial, StanlyGardens of Memory, Albemarle.

The family will be at the home of son Randy Jacobs, 43 Poplar St.

Dr. Clyde Vernon Kiser

GASTONIA —Dr. Clyde Vernon Kiser, 95, noted population expert and brother of Dr. Glenn A. Kiser of Salisbury, died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2000) at Courtland Terrace.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Grace Lutheran Church. Burial, Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Lena V. Lentz

KANNAPOLIS — Lena V. Lentz, 95, formerly of Kannapolis, died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000)at Concord Nursing Center.

Theodore P. Leonard

LEXINGTON —Theodore Pleasant Leonard, 80, Greensboro Street Extension, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a week of illness. He was a former president of Catawba College.

Born Aug. 11, 1919, in Davidson County, Mr. Leonard was a son of the late Carrie Siceloff and P. James Leonard. Retired as teacher, principal and assistant superintendent with the Lexington City Schools, he had also taught at Granite Quarry and Reeds.

A graduate of Lexington High School and Catawba College, Mr. Leonard received a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also received an honorary doctorate of letters from Catawba College in 1976. He was Catawba’s 17th president.

A member of First Reformed United Church of Christ, Mr. Leonard was a lifelong member of the consistory. A trustee of the church, he had taught the Ladies Bible Class at the church for 40 years.

He was a member and past president of the Lexington Kiwanis Club and the Salvation Army board. He was also a member of the boards at Nazareth Children’s Home and Catawba College.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Cameron Leonard.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, First Reformed United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Michael Hooper and the Rev. Bobby Bonds. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Thomas L. McElveen

Thomas L. McElveen, 75, Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Hoy Gene O’Neal

Hoy Gene O’Neal, 62, 540 Skyland Drive, Lancaster, S.C., died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at the Hefner VAMedical Center in Salisbury.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

The family will be at the home of sister Virginia Bost, Airport Road, Salisbury.

 

Annie Davis Reavis

MOCKSVILLE — Annie Clair Davis Reavis, 83, Rocky Dale Lane, Farmington community, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Davie County Hospital.

Born March 24, 1916, in Davie County, Mrs. Reavis was a daughter of the late Joseph Wess and Mary Ada Shaw Davis. She operated a dairy farm with her husband, Fletcher Martin Reavis, who died Nov. 20, 1971. She was a 1934 graduate of Farmington High School and a member of Farmington Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Wayne Reavis, and a daughter, Dorothy Boger.

Survivors include sister Gladys Davis, Wilkesboro; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ben Mull. Burial, Eatons Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: At the funeral home Saturday immediately prior to the service.

Cleo Adams Smith

Cleo Patricia Adams Smith, 95, West Cemetery Street, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton.

Born Aug. 5, 1904, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late James Gordon and Mary Zula Turner Adams. A homemaker, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, John W. Ammons, Milton V. Clement and Luke F. Smith, and a daughter, Billie Elizabeth Hartley.

Survivors include sons John Gordon Ammons, Red Springs, Dallas Lee Ammons and Milton Virgil Clement Jr., both of Salisbury, and Turner Aaron Ammons, Greensboro; sisters Virginia Waters and Jimmi Lou Grubb, both of Mocksville, and Louise Hapner, Alger, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Jim Foil. Burial, Rose Cemetery, Mocksville.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

William Jasper Still

William Jasper Still, 54, 621 W. Fisher St., died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Ruth Watson

LEXINGTON — Ruth Inez Tolbert Watson, 70, Lexington, died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000)at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born in Surry County on Nov. 14, 1929, Mrs. Watson was a daughter of the late Frank and Georgia Smith Tolbert. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church.

Her husband, Walter Watson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Brenda Sheets, Lexington; sons Steve and Bill Boyd, both of Charlotte, Frank Boyd, Owensboro, Ky. and Van Boyd, Rockwell; sister Helen Vipperman, Mount Airy; brother Al Tolbert, Mount Airy; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Moody Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Gene Davis. Burial, Skyline Memory Gardens.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Moody Funeral Home, Mount Airy.
