Court date set in deputy’s death

BY JENNIFER MOXLEY
SALISBURY POST

A Charlotte man awaits a March court date, still wondering if he’ll face more charges for fleeing from a Rowan County sheriff’s deputy who died in the Oct. 17, 1999, pursuit.

A grand jury indicted Fred Edward Redmon Jr., 29, on a charge of felony fleeing to elude arrest after Deputy Rick Hillard chased Redmon into Davie County at speeds surpassing 70 mph. Hillard died when his cruiser spun out of control and struck a tree.

Since the fatality, Sheriff George Wilhelm has advocated additional charges against Redmon under the new felony murder law. The law says that anytime a death occurs as the result of a felony, the suspect can be charged with murder. The felony actions, however, must be the “proximate cause” of the death.

Davie County District Attorney Gary Frank said Wednesday he was “not going to shut the door on any further action” towards Redmon.

“There is no statute of limitations on felonies,” Frank said. Frank said the investigation is complete but could not discuss details of the case.

Redmon is out on bond, and attorney Ed Vogler will represent him in Davie County Superior Court March 13.

According to a N.C. Highway Patrol report, the motorcycle Hillard was pursuing belonged to Redmon’s cousin, Larry Darnell Dillard.

Redmon, accompanied by Vogler, turned himself in to Davie County officials five days after Hillard died.
