China Grove board won’t say what happened in closed session

BY JESSIE BURCHETTE
SALISBURY POST

CHINA GROVE — The head of the town’s Police Committee said today a closed session of the Board of Aldermen Tuesday night has resolved a key personnel issue in the police department.

Alderman John Miller, who was appointed to head the town’s Police Committee in December, would not say what decisions were made in the two-hour closed session.

Miller also said he has no plans to meet with members of the Police Department. He said he will make a recommendation to the aldermen at their next regular meeting on Monday.

For the past two months, the board has been reappointing Chief Michael Bentley every 30 days.

Miller would not say if the board will continue that practice at its February meeting, or if members will adopt some other recommendation.

Bentley did not attend the meeting. Lt. David Miller, the second in command of the department, and two other officers waited outside the meeting room along with former Aldermen Julia Wilson.

Bentley said this morning that he did not know what the topic of the meeting was or what the board may have decided.

The turmoil in the Police Department surfaced in October and has sparked increasing interest and controversy, with residents and former town officials taking sides.

The board has struggled with police issues for several months. Mayor Joseph Sloop appointed Miller to head the committee and supervise the department in December.

Sloop said earlier this week that Aldermen Miller has made significant progress.

Town board members approved the monthly appointments for Chief Bentley after first putting Bentley and Miller on probation for nearly two months.

The probation followed three closed sessions of the board in October, during which a number of officers testified.

Bentley suspended Miller in September, but the board reinstated him, citing a town policy that gives the board, not department heads, power to hire, fire and suspend.
