Mildred Belk Deal

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Mildred Belk Deal, 73, 2001 Fairfax St., who died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Feb. 16, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Deal was a daughter of the late Annie Collett and William Atlas Belk.

A graduate of China Grove High School, she had retired from Cannon Mills. She was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, where she was active in the church choir, the Hattie Sechler Circle and the senior citizens group.

Survivors include husband Preston Deal; son Dennis Russell Deal, Charlotte; brother William Belk, Kannapolis; sisters Vera Abernathy and Mattie Wise, both of Salisbury, Layvon Waggoner, Bear Poplar, Juanita Howell, Concord, and Bette Hampton, Landis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Zion United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home on Fairfax Street.

Mack Ray Bailey

MOCKSVILLE — Mack Ray Bailey, 62, Huffman Road, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at Davie County Hospital.

Born Sept. 8, 1937, in Davidson County, Mr. Bailey was a son of the late Henry Stevenson and Fannie Reid Bailey. Owner-operator of Bailey Salvage Co., he was a member of Jesus Saves Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include wife Rebecca Huffman Bailey; sons Mack Ray Bailey Jr., Charles Bailey, Randy Bailey, James Bailey, Stevie Bailey, Tony Bailey, Bill Suggs, David Sherrill and Timothy Mitchell Sherrill; daughters Linda Bailey, Becky Lynn Hannah, Sherry Lee, Linda Gaile Sherrill, Lisa Lucas and Tracy Roberson; brothers Henry J. Bailey and Terry Limlee; 23 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Eller and the Rev. L.C. Taylor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Henry Kimmons Craven

MOORESVILLE — Henry Kimmons Craven, 84, Pine Street, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 30, 1915, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Craven was a son of the late Frank McKnight and Roberta Kimmons Craven. A graduate of Odell High School, he had worked for 43 years at Burlington Industries, retiring as a supervisor.

Mr. Craven was a member of the Mooresville Lions Club and Central United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the John W. Jones Bible Class.

A daughter, Melissa C. Brawley, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Shumaker Craven, whom he married Dec. 25, 1941; a daughter, Harriet C. Hawn, Wilmington; a son, Henry “Kim” K. Craven, Lincolnton; a sister, Mrs. Burl (Lola) Mann, Mooresville; a brother, Poindexter Craven, Mooresville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: This afternoon at the home on Pine Street.

James Robert ‘Bill’ Eury

RICHFIELD — James Robert “Bill” Eury, 62, 209 Culp Road, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at his home.

Born Jan. 16, 1938, in Norwood, Mr. Eury was a son of Julia Carpenter Eury, Mount Gilead, and the late Willie Ray “Mutt” Eury. He was a sheet metal mechanic with South Eastern Mechanical Contractor.

Besides his mother, survivors include son James Robert “Jamie” Eury Jr., Richfield; stepson Monty Porter, Albemarle; stepdaughter Ann Porter Cole, Albemarle; brother Willie Ray Eury Jr., Gastonia; sisters Diann Eury Roberson, Columbia, S.C., and Beaver Eury Forrest, Mount Gilead; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Honeycutt. Burial, Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. The family will be at the home on Culp Road at other times.

 

Myrtle Arant Ingram

CHINA GROVE — Myrtle Arant Ingram, 87, formerly of Pine Ridge Road, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at the Brian Center in Charlotte.

Born March 9, 1912, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Ingram was a daughter of the late Robert B. and Fannie Roseman Arant. Educated in the Landis schools, she had retired from China Grove Cotton Mill. She was a member of Corriher Heights Baptist Church.

Her husband, Daniel Gaither Ingram, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Carl Lee Ingram, Salisbury; a daughter, Bessie I. Dellinger, Charlotte; a sister, Bell Arant Kimball, China Grove; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Graham. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Charlie Laird

MOCKSVILLE — Charlie Laird, Dulin Road, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Danetta Rashelle Lewis

MOCKSVILLE — Danetta Rashelle Lewis, 20, 127 Branchview Lane, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a period of illness.

Born in Long Island, N.Y., Miss Lewis was a daughter of William and Oneil Brown Lewis Jr. of the home. She was a senior in the trainable mentally handicapped class at Davie High School.

Beryl Van Lierop, 75, Salisbury, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at his home.

Margaret Neely Lowery

CHINA GROVE — Margaret Elizabeth Neely Lowery, 74, 549 Kirk St., died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 10, 1925, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lowery was a daughter of the late Ella Jane Alexander and Walter Sylvester Neely. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was last employed at Sunshine Laundry.

She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she was active with the Pastors Aid Society. She was a former member of the Senior Choir.

Her husband, Martin Luther “Dub” Lowery, died April 24, 1999.

Survivors include sons Johnny Blakeney, Silver Spring, Md., Benjamin Blakeney, Concord, Ronald Lowery, China Grove, and Walter Lowery, of the home; daughters Betty Jordan, of the home, Carolyn Lowery and Sandra Rucker, both of China Grove, Ella Lowery, Kannapolis, and Amy Cathcart, Salisbury; foster sons Fred Gibson Jr., Salisbury, Walter Gibson and Lester Smith, both of Kannapolis; sister Cathleen Jackson, Philadelphia; 35 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge. The family will be at the Kirk Street home.

 

Janie Connor McInnis

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Janie Ellen Connor McInnis, 82, 302 Plymouth St., who died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at her home.

Born Jan. 21, 1918, in Catawba County, Mrs. McInnis was a daughter of the late Daisy Whitener and Charles Connor.

A 1935 graduate of Sherrills Ford High School, she formerly worked at Mann’s and Black’s drugstores in Kannapolis. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include husband Neil McInnis; son Timothy Connor McInnis, Kannapolis; and sisters Peggy Thomas, Boynton Beach, Fla., and Julia Baxter, Virginia.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Keith Grogg. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Grace Kelly Black Miller

Grace Kelly Black Miller, 78, 1129 Fries St., died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health.

Born April 12, 1921, in Erwin, Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late Noah and Carrie Honeycutt Kelly. She was a homemaker.

Husbands John Black and Frank Miller and son Phillip Miller preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Michael Miller, of the home; daughters Patricia Hedrick, Welcome, and Betty Gilbert and Cherekee Shives, both of Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: Graveside service, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lexington City Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Moore of United Church of Christ-Lexington.

‘Ronnie’ Moorefield

LEXINGTON — Ronald “Ronnie” Gene Moorefield, 63, 855 Roy Hartley Road, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born July 1, 1936, in Alamance County, Mr. Moorefield was a son of the late James Oliver and Annie Hazel Reid Moorefield.

Retired from PPG Industries, Mr. Moorefield was a member of Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church, where he was active in the Bible Class.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Gibbs Moorefield, whom he married June 15, 1975; daughters Mona Stuart and Anne Evans, both of Lexington; sons Reggie Moorefield and Dale Gibbs, both of Lexington, and Kent Moorefield, Winston-Salem; sisters Frances Swicegood and Ann Robertson, both of Lexington, and Brenda Berrier, Archdale; brothers Roger, John and Jerry Moorefield, all of Lexington, and Billy Moorefield, Greensboro; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug McGee. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Roy Hartley Road.

 

Colson Herburt Orvin

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Colson Herburt Orvin, 87, 2400 Dawson St., who died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at his home. He had been in declining health 15 years and seriously ill three weeks.

Born Oct. 9, 1912, in St. Stephen, S.C., Mr. Orvin was a son of the late Thomas Raymond and Elizabeth Louise Gaskins Orvin. He had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 4.

His first wife, Margaret Irene Hurd Orvin, died in 1956; and his second wife, Linnie Elizabeth McCommons Orvin, died in 1976.

Survivors include daughters Lynda Elizabeth Orvin Wise, Kannapolis, and Joann Lee Orvin, of the home; son Thomas Colson Orvin, China Grove; stepson Gene Paul Trammell, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the Dawson Street home.

 

Junior O’Brien Pickler

The funeral will be Thursday for Junior O’Brien Pickler, 77, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since November and seriously ill two days.

Born Oct. 31, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Pickler was a son of the late Clara Phelps and James Edwin Pickler.

Educated in the schools of Rowan County, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had worked for N.C. Finishing Co. and had later retired as maintenance supervisor at Salisbury High School. For the last 12 years, he had been a lay minister at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation in Salisbury. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by stepson John “Bud” Wise and a grandson.

Survivors include wife Alice Annernette Wise Pickler, whom he married Dec. 6, 1958; stepdaughters Mrs. Dale (Betty) Boger and Mrs. Roger (Ann) Wallace, both of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Providence United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Summey, pastor, and the Rev. Fred Hill, former pastor. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

The Rev. ‘Sam’ Smoot

The funeral will be Thursday for the Rev. Samuel Pearson “Sam” Smoot, 69, 820 Old Concord Road, who died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at the Hefner VAMedical Center. He had been seriously ill one month.

Services: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rufus Wyatt. Burial, 10 a.m. Friday, Salisbury National Cemetery, with military rites by Salisbury-Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Hattie H. Swicegood

LEXINGTON — Hattie Hartley Swicegood, 84, N.C. 150 South, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Community General Hospital.

Born July 11, 1915, in Davidson County, Mrs. Swicegood was the daughter of Herman Columbus and Ada Elizabeth Shaw Hartley. Retired from Burlington Furniture, she was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class.

Her husband, Fate Richard Swicegood, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Tim Hester, Lexington, and a step-grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Lukes Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Phillips. Burial, Sandy Creek Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of her son on N.C. 150 South.

 

‘Margie’ Taylor

ALBEMARLE — Mary Margorie “Margie” Taylor, 93, 801 River Road W., Manakin-Sabot, Va., died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at Holly Manor Nursing Home in Manakin-Sabot.

Born June 24, 1906, in Montgomery County, Miss Taylor was a daughter of the late Charles and Cora Hall Taylor. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Catawba College and also studied at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Greensboro.

Miss Taylor taught for 43 years in the Albemarle schools, retiring in 1973. The Albemarle Lions Club named her Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1969. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church for more than 60 years.

She was also a member of the N.C. Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Annie Hearne Garden Club, the National Retired Teachers Association, the Historical Association and the Albemarle Woman’s Club, which she had served two terms as vice president.

Survivors include two nephews and a niece.

Services: Graveside service, 2 p.m. Thursday, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. David M. Rorie and the Rev. Bill Fagart.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle.

 

Glenn P. Thompson

LANDIS — Glenn P. Thompson, 78, 501 S. Correll St., died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

MOCKSVILLE — Elizabeth Bell Wall, Mocksville, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Willie James White Jr.

COOLEEMEE — Willie James White Jr., 73, 235 Clark Road, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, following an illness.

Born in Davie County, Mr. White was a son of the late Will and Frankie Noble White. He had retired from Ingersoll-Rand.

Survivors include wife Birlie Ijames White, Cooleemee; daughters Bessie Boyd, Blackridge, Va., and Nancy Campbell, Cooleemee; stepdaughter Doris Patterson, Hamlet; brothers James White, Mocksville, and John Lindsey and Ray Edward White, both of Cooleemee; sister Barbara Ann Thomas, Woodleaf; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Graham Funeral Home, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Beatrice Vaughters. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Billy Edward Whitley

TRINITY — Billy Edward Whitley, 51, 3730 Jill Drive, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point.

Born May 9, 1948, in Stanly County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late Yoder Vernon and Bessie Catherine Hathcock Whitley.

Educated in the Albemarle schools and at Kings Business College, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

An Eagle Scout, he served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. A certified public accoutant for Dixon-Odom, he was a member of First Lutheran Church in Albemarle.

Survivors include his wife, Tamara Kennedy Whitley; and a brother, Yoder Whitley, Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Futterer. Burial, Palestine Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation: 5-7 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mrs. Claude (Joyce) Rogers, 1006 Smith St., Albemarle.
