School’s out... so is spring break

BY ROSE POST
SALISBURY POST

Enjoy today.

It’s the last day of your spring break.

On Monday, Rowan waited through a cloudy, glowering Monday with little or no precipitation of any sort while South Carolina and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area got pelted with snow.

But the snow finally fell early this morning, and at 4:30 a.m., Rowan-Salisbury Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe McCann called off classes for another day.

And today is it for the spring holiday scheduled for April 17 through 20. April 17 and 18 were wiped out when schools were closed for snow last Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday’s closing took away April 19, and today counts for April 20.

“And that takes us up to Good Friday,” McCann said.

If more school days are lost because of weather, they will be made up on Feb. 18, a Friday, and Feb. 21, a Monday, which have been scheduled as system-wide work days.

“That’s all that’s built in,” McCann said.

“And that means spring holidays have been cut to Good Friday and Easter Monday, which will give us a four-day weekend if we have no additional inclement weather.”

If more than two more days are lost, new make-up days will have to be scheduled by the staff and the board.

Schools were still scheduled to meet through most of Monday night and this morning. Some mixed snow and rain fell as the school board concluded a called meeting at the Long Street office last night about 10.

“The roads were wet,” McCann said, so he and Assistant Superintendent Gene Miller planned to ask people to get up at 4 a.m. and take a look.

“At 4 a.m. the ground was covered,” McCann said, “and Gene was getting reports that we had snow throughout the county.”

And Wednesday?

“We’ll look at road decisions again this afternoon,” McCann said. “If we can make a decision then we will. If not, we’ll get up at 3:30 tomorrow morning and make a decision about 4.

“There’s a lot of ice out there, and that will go away very slowly if the temperatures only go to the mid or upper ‘30s.”

Members of the staff who work 11 and 12 months are at work today or are taking leave. Maintenance and transportation staff members are “taking this opportunity to catch up in those areas full force.”
