1240 Flat Rock Road, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after
falling seriously ill a week ago.
Born March 31, 1954, in Iredell County, Mrs.
Bennett was a daughter of Ray and Geneva Caldwell Morrison of China Grove.
A graduate of South Rowan High School, she worked
at Hoechst-Celanese/KoSa and was a member of Sills Creek AME Zion Church.
Survivors include a son, Bryant Keith Morrison,
China Grove; a daughter, Lori Elizabeth Mack, Charlotte; a brother, Donald Morrison, China
Grove; sisters, Kathleen Sneed, Charlotte, Elaine Morrison, China Grove, and Pamela Louise
Morrison, Landis; and four grandchildren.
The family will be at the home of Ray and Geneva

Transitional Health Services, formerly of 422 Oak Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at
Transitional Health Services after being seriously ill one week.
Born Nov. 30, 1906, in Cumberland County, Mrs.
Cameron was a daughter of the late Edward and Lincy Snead. She retired from Cannon Mills
Co. Plant 4 weave room after many years of service.
She was a member of Hope Mills United Methodist
Church.
Her husband, Daniel L. Cameron, died in 1981.
Survivors include daughters Gwen Tuck, Concord,
Betty Steele, Kannapolis, Wanda Cameron, Rockwell and Judy Hawkins, Tarboro; sisters Lela
Gremm and Annie Gray, both of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild.

Hill, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Corl
was a daughter of the late Fannie Rinehardt and William Henry Hammill. She graduated from
Mount Pleasant High School and was a homemaker.
She was a life member of St. Stephens
Lutheran Church and a member of Vanhoy Sells VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gilmer
Welker Corl, who died Dec. 2, 1987.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. Gilbert (Rita)
Hooks, Gold Hill; sisters Willie Helderman and Alma Crowell, both of Albemarle, and Ruth
Black, Gold Hill; and two grandchildren.

John Russell Ellis
John Russell Ellis, 80, 203 Five Row St., died
Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Brian Nursing Center, after falling seriously ill several
weeks ago.
Born Jan. 8, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Ellis was
a son of the late John D. and Alice Hailey Ellis.
He attended public schools in Rowan County and
served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Ellis was a retired employee of Norfolk
and Southern Railroad and a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Survivors include brothers, Howard and Raymond
Ellis, both of Salisbury, and sisters, Janie Cannon, Salisbury, Ruthie Winston, Lexington,
and Juanita Ellis, Farrockaway, N.Y.

Gregory Lane, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at her home after falling seriously ill several
weeks ago.
Born June 10, 1925, in Charlotte, Mrs. Gregory was
the daughter of the late Ford and Queenie Ann Brown Collins.
A graduate of the Mecklenburg County public
schools, she was a retired domestic worker. Mrs. Gregory was a member of New Bethel
Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Secretary Nurses Board and the Pastors
Aide and adult choir, president of the Missionary Circle and a Sunday school teacher.
Her husband, J.B. Gregory, died in 1974, and son
Stepone Gregory died on July 28, 1997.
Survivors include sons, James Gregory Jr.,
Salisbury, Milas Gregory, Welcome, and Matthew Gregory, Woodleaf; daughters, Dovie Ijames
and Laverne Barber, both of Cleveland, Agnes Jackson, Woodleaf, Mary Ann Tenor,
Mocksville, Pearline Litaker, Salisbury, and Gertrude Gregory, of the home; 13
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert Lee Kimble, 87, 710 Julian Road and
formerly of Yadkin House Apartments, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of
Salisbury.
Born Jan. 24, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Kimble
was a son of the late Martin Luther and Fannie Pepper Kimble.
Educated in the East Spencer Schools, he worked
for Southern Railway at Spencer Shops for 27 years and as a machinist for Cone Mills
before retiring.
Mr. Kimble was a member of Coburn Memorial United
Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Mens Sunday School Class.
His wife, Rachel Smith Kimble, died on Sept. 10,
1995.
Survivors include a son, Robert L. Kimble Jr.,
Newport News, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. John (Anne K.) Burdette, Advance; brothers, M.L. and
Elmer Kimble, both of Salisbury; sisters Juanita K. Grubb and Thelma K. Mull, both of
Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Abram Murphy Poole
Abram Murphy Poole, 75, 125 Pop Stirewalt Road,
died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000), at his home. His health had declined for two months, and he
fell seriously ill a week ago.
Born Jan. 28, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Poole was
the son of the late David Lawton and Chally Stoner Poole.
Educated in the Rowan County schools, he served 22
years in the U.S. Navy, retired as a machinist mate first class. Mr. Poole returned to
Salisbury and worked as a security guard for Fiber Industries and Normans before
retiring in 1986.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
His wife, Alice Elizabeth West Poole, died on Jan.
31, 1986.
Survivors include sons, Gene Poole, Richmond, Va.,
and the Rev. Ted Edwards, Beckley, W. Va.; a daughter, Lorraine P. Martin, Salisbury;
companion and caregivers Mary Lepley and her son, Joe Lepley, of the home; 11
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Samuel Pearson Sam Smoot, 69,
820 Old Concord Road, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after
falling seriously ill a month ago.
Born July 20, 1930, in Greensboro, the Rev. Smoot
was a son of the late James C. and Lucy Phifer Smoot.
He attended J.C. Price High School and served in
the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired employee of Piedmont Garden &
Supply and a member and associate member of United Baptist Church in Lexington.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kee Bryant Smoot;
sons, Robert Bobb Bryant, the Rev. Bernard Smoot and Johnny Smoot, all of
Salisbury; a daughter, Zandra Bryant Byrd, Salisbury; brothers, Elmer Smoot, New York,
N.Y., Bernard Smoot, Philadelphia, Pa., and David Smoot, Tarboro; a sister, Billie Jean
Hillian, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Beckner Road, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical
Center in Winston-Salem.
Born Sept. 29, 1926, in Martinsville, Va., Mrs.
Wallman was a daughter of the George Saunders and Sudie Ann Prevette Covington.
She had lived in Davidson County for 15 years and
was a retired employee of Anchor Hocking Co. of Pennsville, N.J.
Mrs. Wallman attended Stoners Grove Baptist Church
and the Senior Center of Southmont.
Her husband, Theodore Ambrose Wallman, died on
Oct. 24, 1990.
Survivors include a son, Theodore Wallman Jr., New
Jersey; a brother, Herbert Covington, Spokane, Wash.; sisters, Patsy Mills and Nancy
Kivett, both of Southmont, and Betty Chapman, Concord; a grandson; and three
great-grandchildren.
