Visiting Johnson C. Smith sweeps past Livingstone

Johnson C. Smith’s Golden Bulls came from behind to defeat Livingstone 72-63 in a CIAA men’s basketball game Saturday night.

Coach Charles McCullough’s Blue Bears held a 30-25 halftime lead, but J. C. Smith outscored Livingstone 47-33 in the second half at Trent Gym.

The Golden Bulls shot 61.9 percent from the floor in the second half and 52.2 percent for the game while upping their record to 5-9.

Livingstone, which shot only 37.1 percent for the night, dropped to 4-8.

Antonio Wade scored 14 points to lead the Golden Bulls’ balanced scoring. Wiyle Petty scored 11, while Jahmad Woods and Lemans Shingler added 10 apiece.

Center Rodney Gidney paced Livingstone with 15 points. Forward Cornelius Gordon and point guard Willie Rouse finished with 14 and 12, respectively.

Livingstone returns to action at home against Fayetteville State on Tuesday in another CIAA contest.

Strong Johnson C. Smith defeated Livingstone 87-75 in a CIAA women’s basketball game at Trent Gym here Saturday.

J. C. Smith, now 13-3, took a 47-39 halftime lead, then outscored Livingstone (7-7) by 40-36 in the second half.

Letisha Crawford of Smith was the game’s scoring leader with 17 points, while ErinMoore and Marquisha Clayburn added 13 each. Cassandra Penn and Sharon Palmer each scored 10.

Livingstone also had balanced scoring with Erica Deas scoring 16, Chanel Edwards getting 14, and Julie Tarrance and Angela Thomas 12 apiece.

Smith’s Crawford and Livingstone’s Tarrance each grabbed 13 rebounds.
