James Sidney Sid Ballard, 63, South Magnolia Street, died Thursday
(Jan. 20, 2000) at his home.
Born Sept. 25, 1936, in Mecklenburg County, Mr.
Ballard was a son of Mary Rodgers Ballard, Cornelius, and the late Larry Leroy Ballard.
Employed at The Pines at Davidson, he worked in the maintenance department. He was a
member of Central United Methodist Church and Williams Masonic Lodge 176 AF&AM,
Cornelius.
A son, Darin Ballard, preceded him death.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife
Elaine McElveen Ballard, whom he married Nov. 6, 1965; sons Roddy A. Ballard and Gregory
A. Ballard, both of Mooresville; brothers William Ballard, Marshville, Thomas Ballard,
Davidson, and Kermit Ballard, Cornelius; sisters Nancy B. Goodrun, Cornelius, and Rachel
P. Richards, Denver; and four grandchildren.

Wyoming Drive, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center after a short
illness.
Born July 9, 1930, in Union County, Mrs. Bethea
was a daughter of the late Vernie Burgess and Luther Pope. She had retired from Sunrise
Apparel (formerly Pacers). She was a member of Rodgers Park Baptist Church, Kannapolis.
Her husband of 42 years, Charles Hampton Lipe,
died Dec. 15, 1992.
Survivors include her second husband, James W.
Bethea; sons Steve Lipe, China Grove, and Frank Lipe, Kannapolis; daughter Suzanne Milam,
Rockwell; brothers John Buck Pope, Denton, Bruce Pope, Mint Hill, and Grady
Pope, Salisbury; sisters Joyce Patterson and Jane Vannoy, both of Kannapolis; four
stepchildren; and four grandchildren.

Elizabeth Rattz Brawley
Elizabeth Rattz Brawley, 86, formerly of 738 Grace
St., died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of
declining health.
Born Nov. 10, 1913, in Salisbury, Mrs. Brawley was
a daughter of the late Essie Mae Aldrich and B.M. Rattz. A graduate of J.C. Price High
School, she had retired from N.C. Finishing Co. and Catawba College.
A life member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, she
was a deaconess and a member of the Faithful Workers, the Missionary Circle, the Trustee
Board, the Kitchen Committee, the Building Committee (for the present church) and the
Court of Calanthe.
Her husband, Troy Brawley, died April 9, 1996.
Survivors include foster son Robert L. Ervin,
Upper Marlboro, Md.; stepson Joe L. Scott, Hinesville, Ga.; and foster daughters Shirley
Ervin Leazer, Salisbury, and Sylvia Ervin Clarke, Brentwood, N.Y.

Kelly, 69, 814 W. A St., died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord,
after a week of serious illness.
Born Nov. 4, 1930, in Darlington County, S.C., Mr.
Kelly was a son of the late Hosea and Maebelle Shumake Kelly. Due to ill health, he had
retired in 1984 after 19 years at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 4 spinning room. He was a
member of Eastwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife Alma Linton Kelly; son Mark
Wesley Kelly, Landis; daughters Janice Kelly, of the home, and Melissa Holt, Kannapolis;
brothers W.R. and James Kelly, both of Hartsville, S.C., Junior Kelly, Concord, and Jimmy

Born April 22, 1923, in Stanly County, Mrs. Lee
was a daughter of the late John William and Virginia Collin Blalock Lowder. She was a
graduate of Norwood School. A homemaker, she was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include husband Henry Herbert Lee; sons
Herbert Eugene Herbie Lee, Tony Lane Lee, Henry Steve Lee, Harry David Lee and
Toby Joe Lee, all of Norwood; daughter Judy Lee Blalock, Albemarle; brothers Littleton

Brawley Avenue, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at her residence.
Born May 4, 1923, in Lincoln County, Mrs.
Lineberger was a daughter of the late Lula Elizabeth Howard and John Ernest Hager. She had
retired as a machine operator for Templon Spinning Mills, Mooresville, after 30 years with
the company.
She was a member of Mooresville Church of God,
where she had formerly served as assistant Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include daughter Cathey L. Baker,
Mooresville; sister Onis H. Fish, Mooresville; two grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter.

Howard Montgomery, 74, died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000)
at The Laurels of Salisbury.
Born May 7, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Montgomery
was a son of the late Etta and Will Montgomery. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he
worked with Daniel Construction. He attended Moores Chapel AME Zion Church,
Cleveland.
Survivors include son Roger Jackson, Salisbury;
daughter Trudy Johnson, Salisbury; brother Arthur Montgomery, Philadelphia; five
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Paul Bryce Staton
ALBEMARLE Paul Bryce Staton, 79, 319 Palmer
St., died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 26, 1920, in Stanly County, Mr. Staton
was a son of the late Clarence Lawrence and Idell Furr Staton. He had worked as a dye
house hand at Wiscassett Mills. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Phillipines
during World War II.
Survivors include daughters Patricia Ann Holt and
Rebecca Furr, both of Albemarle; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were to be held at 11 this
morning at Stanly Gardens of Memory. The Rev. Howard Benoy was to officiate.
The family will be at the home of daughter Rebecca
Furr, 29963 Chip Road.
