Eva Viola Schenk BasingerThe
funeral will be Saturday for Eva Viola Schenk Basinger, 86, 2950 Sherrills Ford Road, who
died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs.
Basinger was a daughter of the late James Edward and Blanche Elizabeth Graham Schenk.
Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a seamstress and a homemaker. She had been a
member of St. Marks Lutheran Church for over 50 years.
Her husband, Eli Augustus Basinger, died Sept. 16,
1989.
Survivors include son Eli Basinger, Salisbury;
daughter Rena Elizabeth Basinger, of the home; brothers Gurney Frank Schenk, Salisbury,
and RichardLee Dick Schenk, Chula Vista, Calif.; sisters Mrs. Otho (Worthy)
Leazer and Mrs. Marvin (Lorene)Leazer, both of Salisbury, and Mrs. Cecil (Mary) Allen,
Granite Quarry; and two grandchildren.

Martha Kistler Bowles
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Saturday for
Martha Kistler Bowles, 75, 4300 Hilton Lake Road, who died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at
NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a period of declining health and a week of
serious illness.
Born June 18, 1924, in Iredell County, Mrs. Bowles
was a daughter of the late Fred Lee and Ethel Geneva Suther Kistler. She had retired due
to health problems in 1961 from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, washcloth department. She later
worked at Delta Electric Co., Salisbury.
A charter member of Sunrise Freewill Baptist
Church, she was also a member of Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include husband Frank Bowles; son James
D. King Jr., Salisbury; sister Ruth Steele, Cape Carteret; stepdaughter Ann Christy,
Kannapolis; stepsons Chris and Tim Bowles, both of Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.

The daughter of Clarence Jackson, she was last
employed at Livingstone College.

Johnston, 53, Bentwood Lane, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical
Center, Mooresville.
Born Sept. 19, 1946, in Mooresville, Mrs. Johnston
was a daughter of the late Joseph Webber and Gwendolyn Shiplett Crowell. A 1964 graduate
of Mooresville Senior High School, she was employed in the clerical department of
Mid-South Utilities. She was a former employee of Piedmont Natural Gas in Charlotte.
Survivors include son Michael T. Johnston Jr.,
Mooresville; sisters Mrs. Donnie (Nancy C.) Robinson and Mrs. Randy (Jody C.) Oliphant,

Eddie Paul Lentz, 64, 202 Dunham Ave., died
Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 6, 1935, in Roanoke, Ala., Mr. Lentz was
a son of W. Harold and Opal Webster Lentz, with whom he made his home. He was a 1954
graduate of Granite Quarry High School.
Retired after 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, he
was a Vietnam War veteran. He had also retired from Gaston Gear Roller Co. He was a member
of Faith Baptist Church.

daughter Mrs. Roy (Cindy) Lancaster, Rockwell; and two grandchildren.

The infant was born Jan. 6, 2000, in Mecklenburg
County.

Gartrell Wood, 80, 380 Goodman Road, who died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at NorthEast
Medical Center.
Born March 17, 1919, in MadisonCounty, Ga., Mr.
Wood was a son of the late Charlie and Azzie Chastain Wood. He had retired in 1983 after
40 years with Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, Plant 1, No. 7 weave room.
A member of First Foursquare Church, he served in
the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include wife Lena Aldridge Wood; son
Donnie Wood, Concord; daughters Kay Lentz, Concord, Patsy Wood Hines, Huntersville, and
