John Barney Robert Brooks, 79, 301 Airport Road, who died Monday (Jan. 17,
2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Sept. 9, 1920, in Union County, Mr.. Brooks
was a son of the late Charlie and Onnie Baker Brooks. He had retired from Fieldcrest
Cannon. A member of United Baptist Church, he served on the church trustee board.
Survivors include wife Ernie Bost Brooks; daughter
Mary Elizabeth Mayfield, Washington, D.C.; son Charlie R. Brooks, Kannapolis; three
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

was a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Eva Jane Bame Hodge. A homemaker, she was a
member of Needmore Baptist Church, Woodleaf.
She was preceded in death by her first husband,
Albert Haire; her second husband, Murphy Gunter; and a son, Wade Haire.
Survivors include son Clyde Haire, Cleveland;
daughters Myrtle Vick, Cleveland, and Loretta Bolick, Tampa, Fla.; sister Exie Hodge,
Cleveland; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SPENCER The funeral will be Friday for Sean
Robert Noseworthy, 22, 106 Eighth St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Rowan
Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, from injuries sustained in an autombile accident.
Born Jan. 18, 1978, in Wayne County, he was a son
of Mary Adcock Noseworthy of Spencer, and Paul Robert Noseworthy of Peoria, Ariz. A member
of Landmark Church, Salisbury, he had attended West Rowan High School. A cook at
Martins Barbecue, he also worked for Steves Barbecue.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
daughter Brandy Leigh Fox, Salisbury; brother Adam Charles Noseworthy, Spencer; maternal
grandmother Catherine Adcock, Spencer; and paternal grandparents Frank and Jean Gutowski,
Seabrook, N.H.

CONCORD Cletus George Sonny
Watts Jr., 67, 38 Second St. N.W., died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at his home after two
years of declining health.
Born Oct. 7, 1932, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Watts
was a son of the late Cletus G. and Marie Blackwelder Watts. Employed by Wackenhut
Security Corp., he had worked as a security officer for CannonMills. He pitched for the
local American Legion baseball team in the 1940s.
His wife, Barbara Sloop Watts, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include son Alan Keith Watts, Salisbury;
sisters Mrs. Charles (Jean) Spoon, Concord, Mrs. Herbert (Barbara Ann) Browning, Columbia,
S.C., and Elizabeth Shue, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

213 S. Lee St., Apartment 2, who died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at his home.
Born Aug. 1, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr. Adkins was
a son of the late Rosetta Adkins and Paul Phillips. Educated in the Rowan County schools,
he worked for the Salisbury Water Department. He was a former member of Macedonia Baptist
Church.
Survivors include sons Paul Adkins Jr. and Darryl
Boyd Adkins, both of Salisbury; daughters Mary Jane Adkins, Fayetteville, and Rose Alice
Adkins and Martha Jean Adkins, both of Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Born June 23, 1921, in Rowan County, Mrs. Battle
was a daughter of the late Marian Barber and Alexander Jackson. She was employed in
private duty nursing. She was a member of Southern City AMEZion Church.
Her husband, James Junior Battle, died July 23,
1995.
Survivors include son Charles Long of the home;
three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ila Bell Neely Coleman, 83, 2-D Zion Hills
Apartments, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at her home.
Born Jan. 20, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Coleman
was the daughter of the late Frank S. and Maggie Anna Locke Neely. A graduate of Price
High School, she had retired as a nursery attendant at Woodleaf Lanes.
Mrs. Coleman was an associate trustee at Soldiers
Memorial AME Zion Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Kitchen
Committee. She also was a member of the Miller Recreation Senior Citizens Club.
Her husband, Wellington W. Coleman, died in 1981.
Survivors include sons Wellington Warner Coleman
Jr. and Arthur Solomon Joe Coleman, both of Washington, D.C.; daughter
Margaret C. Wansley, Salisbury; brother Laverne Neely, Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.

Hardister was a daughter of the late Robert C. and Minnie Doby Hoover. Retired from North
Stanly School, she was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church, Denton.
Her husband, Robert C. Hardister, died Jan. 17,
1955.
Survivors include sons Robert, Don and Jock
Hardister, all of Albemarle; daughters Frances Taylor, Albemarle, Lucille Maner, Norwood,
Laura Brown and Linda Justice, both of Indian Trail, Shirley Hardister, Charlotte, and Sue
Fraley, New London; half brother Paul Hoover, Denton; half sister Helen Hughes,
