Eva Viola Basinger, 86, 2950 Sherrills Ford Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Catherine Propst Bines

VALE — Catherine Minnie Propst Bines, 67, Vale, formerly of 2402 Rachel St., Charlotte, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, after a lengthy illness. She was the sister of Jean Adkins, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Dennis Alvin Memorial Chapel, Allen Mitchell Funeral Home,Hickory, conducted by the Rev. Linda Lewis. Burial, New Hope Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Martha Kistler Bowles

KANNAPOLIS — Martha Kistler Bowles, 75, 4300 Hilton Lake Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a period of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

John ‘Robert’ Brooks

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for John Barney “Robert” Brooks, 79, 301 Airport Road, who died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 9, 1920, in Union County, Mr.. Brooks was a son of the late Charlie and Onnie Baker Brooks. He had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon. A member of United Baptist Church, he served on the church trustee board.

Survivors include wife Ernie Bost Brooks; daughter Mary Elizabeth Mayfield, Washington, D.C.; son Charlie R. Brooks, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, United Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Jones. Burial, Reaves Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home on Airport Road.

Clark Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Zeda Hodge Haire Gunter

CLEVELAND — Zeda Hodge Haire Gunter, 93, 17560 Dooley Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Spencer Healthcare Center, Spencer.

BornJan. 14, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Gunter was a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Eva Jane Bame Hodge. A homemaker, she was a member of Needmore Baptist Church, Woodleaf.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Haire; her second husband, Murphy Gunter; and a son, Wade Haire.

Survivors include son Clyde Haire, Cleveland; daughters Myrtle Vick, Cleveland, and Loretta Bolick, Tampa, Fla.; sister Exie Hodge, Cleveland; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Needmore Baptist Church, Woodleaf, conducted by the Rev. R. Howard Wagoner. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, Statesville.

Nina B. Kirkpatrick

CONCORD — Nina Bost Kirkpatrick, 86, 659 Central Drive, mother of Mamie Ford, Kannapolis, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Liberty Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Harry Love III. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home on Central Drive.

Clark Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Sean Robert Noseworthy

SPENCER — The funeral will be Friday for Sean Robert Noseworthy, 22, 106 Eighth St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, from injuries sustained in an autombile accident.

Born Jan. 18, 1978, in Wayne County, he was a son of Mary Adcock Noseworthy of Spencer, and Paul Robert Noseworthy of Peoria, Ariz. A member of Landmark Church, Salisbury, he had attended West Rowan High School. A cook at Martin’s Barbecue, he also worked for Steve’s Barbecue.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include daughter Brandy Leigh Fox, Salisbury; brother Adam Charles Noseworthy, Spencer; maternal grandmother Catherine Adcock, Spencer; and paternal grandparents Frank and Jean Gutowski, Seabrook, N.H.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, Landmark Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Benny Hillard and the Rev. Jerry Snipes. The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Burial, City Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

 

‘Sonny’ Watts Jr.

CONCORD — Cletus George “Sonny” Watts Jr., 67, 38 Second St. N.W., died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at his home after two years of declining health.

Born Oct. 7, 1932, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Watts was a son of the late Cletus G. and Marie Blackwelder Watts. Employed by Wackenhut Security Corp., he had worked as a security officer for CannonMills. He pitched for the local American Legion baseball team in the 1940s.

His wife, Barbara Sloop Watts, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Alan Keith Watts, Salisbury; sisters Mrs. Charles (Jean) Spoon, Concord, Mrs. Herbert (Barbara Ann) Browning, Columbia, S.C., and Elizabeth Shue, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Oakwood Cemetery, conducted by the Rev.Carl Howard.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, Wilkinson Funeral Home.

 

Gartrell Wood

CONCORD — Gartrell Wood, 80, 380 Goodman Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Paul Adkins

The funeral will be Saturday for Paul Adkins, 62, 213 S. Lee St., Apartment 2, who died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at his home.

Born Aug. 1, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr. Adkins was a son of the late Rosetta Adkins and Paul Phillips. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he worked for the Salisbury Water Department. He was a former member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Paul Adkins Jr. and Darryl Boyd Adkins, both of Salisbury; daughters Mary Jane Adkins, Fayetteville, and Rose Alice Adkins and Martha Jean Adkins, both of Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. W.T. Jackson, pastor.Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge. At other times, the family will be at the home of his sister, Martha Jean Adkins, 69 Hill St.

Delores Jackson Battle

The funeral will be Friday for Delores Jackson Battle, 78, 501 N. Long St., who died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 23, 1921, in Rowan County, Mrs. Battle was a daughter of the late Marian Barber and Alexander Jackson. She was employed in private duty nursing. She was a member of Southern City AMEZion Church.

Her husband, James Junior Battle, died July 23, 1995.

Survivors include son Charles Long of the home; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Love Christian Center, East Spencer, conducted by Dr. Ronald Hash, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Ila Bell Neely Coleman

Ila Bell Neely Coleman, 83, 2-D Zion Hills Apartments, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at her home.

Born Jan. 20, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Coleman was the daughter of the late Frank S. and Maggie Anna Locke Neely. A graduate of Price High School, she had retired as a nursery attendant at Woodleaf Lanes.

Mrs. Coleman was an associate trustee at Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Kitchen Committee. She also was a member of the Miller Recreation Senior Citizens Club.

Her husband, Wellington W. Coleman, died in 1981.

Survivors include sons Wellington Warner Coleman Jr. and Arthur Solomon “Joe” Coleman, both of Washington, D.C.; daughter Margaret C. Wansley, Salisbury; brother Laverne Neely, Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home in Zion Hills Apartments. Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Theolar ‘Caldonia’ Cousar

The funeral will be Saturday for Theolar “Caldonia” Cousar, 92, 722-A W. Kerr St., who died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Mitchell & Fair Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Nilous Avery II, pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Burial, Fair Plains AME Zion Church cemetery, McColl, S.C.

Visitation: 11 a.m. Saturday, Mitchell & Fair Memorial Chapel. At other times, the family will be at the home on West Kerr Street.

 

Amanda Hoover Hardister

NEW LONDON — Amanda Hoover Hardister, 92, 33027 Henderson Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Forrest Oakes Health Care Center, Albemarle.

Born Sept. 26, 1907, in Randolph County, Mrs. Hardister was a daughter of the late Robert C. and Minnie Doby Hoover. Retired from North Stanly School, she was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church, Denton.

Her husband, Robert C. Hardister, died Jan. 17, 1955.

Survivors include sons Robert, Don and Jock Hardister, all of Albemarle; daughters Frances Taylor, Albemarle, Lucille Maner, Norwood, Laura Brown and Linda Justice, both of Indian Trail, Shirley Hardister, Charlotte, and Sue Fraley, New London; half brother Paul Hoover, Denton; half sister Helen Hughes, Thomasville; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Prospect Baptist Church, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Johnson, the Rev. Terry Maner and the Rev. Delane Burris. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.
