Pfeiffer delivers defeat to Anderson

BY SCOTT WILHELM

MISENHEIMER—Much like the United States Postal Service, Pfeiffer University’s men’s basketball players let neither wind nor rain nor sudden snowstorm keep them from their appointed rounds.

Much unlike the Postal Service, however, Pfeiffer delivers poundings instead of parcels, as evidenced by its 95-69 thrashing of Anderson on Tuesday night.

The “Poundmaster General” for Pfeiffer was Nem Sovic once again. Sovic, who earned Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors last week, netted 28 points in just 21 minutes. Twenty-two of those points came after halftime, when the Falcons put the game away.

“Nem was terrific again,” said Pfeiffer head coach Dave Davis. “He was very strong inside in the second half, he was just phenomenal. He scored a boatload of points in the second half, and that’s because his teammates did a good job of getting the ball to him.”

Though Sovic’s play pleased his coach, the Falcons’ rebounding performance left a few things to be desired, according to Davis.

“I’m disappointed in our rebounding effort,” said Davis, whose team lost the board battle 45-34. “Our focus and execution was bad. To be honest, we’re not going to win very many basketball games if we rebound like that. We’re just fortunate that Nem and Emory (Smith) shot the way they did.”

While Sovic ruled the second half, Smith, who finished with 21 points, took care of the opening minutes for Pfeiffer (10-3, 5-0 CVAC).

The Falcons raced out to an early 11-4 lead on the strength of five points from Smith.

Anderson answered the challenge, going on an 11-6 run that pulled it within two at 17-15 with 13:24 left in the first half. That spurt served only to anger the Falcons, as they blasted on a 26-11 run that put them ahead 43-26 with 6:04 remaining in the half. Smith was the leader of the pack once again, scoring seven points during the spurt, including two 3-pointers.

Anderson pulled to within eight at 52-44 with 16:22 left in the game.

“Once we found our offense, we got a comfortable lead. And that’s what happened to us—we got comfortable. And with the up-tempo way we play, that’s unacceptable because people can come back on us.”

That comeback would be Anderson’s last, however, as Pfeiffer went on a 25-9 jaunt that left the Falcons leading 77-53 with 8:14 left in the game. Sovic dominated play during the stretch, scoring 16 points from all conceivable angles.

The final nails were smashed in by Pfeiffer’s free-throw shooting. The Falcons made 12 charity tosses in the final 4:36 to seal it.

“We’re lucky to get the win, especially the way it happened” said Davis. “Usually your lessons are taught in losses, but maybe we can learn something from this game without it costing us a loss.”
