Pearl O. Auten

KANNAPOLIS —Pearl O. Auten, 95, of Piedmont Center Assisted Living Center in Thomasville, died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem. She was a former resident of Larry Drive.

Born Sept. 12, 1904, in Iredell County, Mrs. Auten was the daughter of the late Ethel Freeze and Edward Davidson Oliphant. Retired from Cannon Mills, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Robert Taylor Auten, and a daughter, Neva Edmiston McQuiddy, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Ruth Edmiston Joyner, Concord, Hilda Edmiston Ross, North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Peggy Edmiston Reithel, Ashtutula, Fla.; son G. Scott Edmiston, Matthews; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Nanney, Sarah Weaver, the Rev. Don Shuman and the Rev. Wendy Shenk-Evans. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30-4 p.m. today, at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Ruth Joyner, 597 Deveron Place N.E., Concord.

Ernest Jerome Bailey

NEW LONDON — Ernest Jerome Bailey, 87, 44508 Honeybee Circle, died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center, Albemarle.

Born May 30, 1912, in Montgomery County, Mr. Bailey was a son of the late Cicero and Lizzie Forrest Bailey. Retired from Collins &Aikman Corp., he had earlier worked for American &Efird Mill Co. for 30 years. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Lois W. Bailey; stepsons Cary McSwain, Columbia, S.C., Jerry McSwain, Raleigh, and Rodney McSwain, Charlotte; stepdaughters Priscilla Dreiling, Wichita, Kan., and Gail McSwain, Eden; and 13 step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Bethel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Carroll A. Flack. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.

 

Sara Boan

KANNAPOLIS — Sara Sowell Boan, 76, 909 S. Juniper St., died Sunday (Jan. 16,2000) at Transitional Health Services.

Born Nov. 22, 1923, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Boan was a daughter of the late Willie L. and Annie Lampley Sowell. Retired from Cannon Mills, she was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Chesterfield, S.C., but attended Royal Oaks United Methodist Church.

Her husband, James Bruce Boan, died Aug. 22, 1990.

Survivors include daughter Nancy Boan Marsh, China Grove; and one grandson.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Chesterfield, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Ronnie W. Parker and the Rev. Audrey Ritter. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Burial, Hurst Cemetery, Chesterfield, S.C.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Juniper Street.

 

George Henry Coone

The funeral will be Wednesday for George Henry Coone, 81, 808 Sprucewood St., who died Sunday (Jan. 17, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Dec. 24, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Coone was a son of the late Lawrence Eugene and Margaret Alice Isenhour Coone. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he had worked as a weaver at Cannon Mills.

He was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a former member of American Legion Post 115 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Estelle Cosby Coone.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Bethpage Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Steven Mowery and the Rev. Keith Grass. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Billie Lee Leazer

The funeral will be Wednesday for Billie Lee Leazer, 68, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 5, 1932, in Rowan County, Mrs. Leazer was a daughter of the late Marshall and Georgia Lee Shue Stamper. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Her husband,Lewis Henry Leazer, died Nov. 2, 1964.

Survivors include sons Lewis HenryLeazer Jr., Rockwell, and Joel Eugene Leazer, Salisbury; daughters Mrs. David (Judy)Harwood, Salisbury, and Mrs. Michael (Telka Lee) Abbott, Rockwell; brother Marshall “Sonny” Stamper, Kannapolis; sisters Mrs. Tommy (Bessie)Johnson, Spencer, and Mrs. Wayne (Priscilla “Doodle”) Propst, China Grove; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks, pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rockwell. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Judy Harwood, 1070 Upper Palmer Road.

Atlas Brady ‘A.B.’ Medlin

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be this afternoon for Atlas Brady “A.B.” Medlin, 99, formerly of 350 Fred Lane, who died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born July 18, 1900, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Medlin was a son of the late William and Janie Whitley Medlin. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he formerly owned and operated a used car dealership.

His first wife, Ruth Lefler Medlin, died in 1974, and his second wife, Lanie Rodger Medlin, died in 1990. A son, Richard E. Medlin, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Hazel Stirewalt and Helen Holt, both of China Grove, Lila Holshouser, Faith, and Ethel Mihalic, Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 today, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Bryon Whitley and the Rev. Ron Rider. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30-2:45 today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Hazel Stirewalt, 350 Fred Lane, with whom he formerly made his home.

Nina Morgan Pickler, 100

WINSTON-SALEM — Nina Esther Morgan Picker, 100, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Born Feb. 8, 1899, in Stanly County, Mrs. Pickler was a daughter of Mike Jiles and Eliza Wiles Morgan. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, the Rev. Clarence L. Pickler, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son J.D. Pickler, Randleman; brother Burley C. Morgan, Salisbury; two granddaughters; two step-grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Kendall’s Baptist Church cemetery, New London, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald.

Visitation: None.

Dorothy Upright Rumple

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Dorothy Viola Upright Rumple, 71, 6338 Tuckaseegee Road, who died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after six weeks of illness.

Born Nov. 13, 1928, in Rowan County, Mrs. Rumple was a daughter of the late Marvin E. and Daisy Morris Upright. She was a 1948 graduate of Landis High School.

She had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 6 weave room. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Junior S. Rumple; daughter Judy Harwell, Kannapolis; sisters Colleen Upright, China Grove, and Hazel Boatwright, Kannapolis; brother Harry “Gene” Upright, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Randy Foster. Burial, Bethpage UnitedMethodist Church cemetery.

Helen Cassidy Atterbury

Helen Cassidy Atterbury, 85, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) in Plano, Texas.

Ralph Coe Beard Jr., 72, The Plaza, died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at University Hospital, Charlotte.

Fletcher ‘Shorty’ Burley

ALBEMARLE — Fletcher “Shorty” Burley, 69, 1073 Lundix St., died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Aug. 5, 1930, in Toons County, Ga., Mr. Burley was a son of the late Ophelia Williams and Joseph Lane. Educated in the Toons County schools, he had retired from Collins and Aikman.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include wife Mildred Legett Burley; daughter Blondie D. Burley, Albemarle; sister Ora Lee Hooker, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, memorial service, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, conducted by Bishop Richard Shaw, pastor. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: None.

Joann Cooper

A local funeral will be held Friday for Joann Cooper, 61, a Salisbury native who died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at her home in Hinesville, Ga., following a long illness.

One of her surviving daughters is Jerrie Markiewicz of Battleground, Wash., whose place of residence was given incorrectly in an earlier obituary.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, church fellowship hall.

 

Hazeline Grubb Jowers

A graveside service will be held Wednesday for Hazeline Grubb Jowers, 87, Salisbury, who died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health several years and seriously ill two weeks.

Born Oct. 16, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jowers was a daughter of the late Grace Kesler and Walter Gray Jowers. A graduate of Boyden High School and Catawba College, she had retired after 35 years as a teacher in the Rowan County schools.

She was a longtime member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Rowan County Garden Club.

Her husband, Henry Carlisle “Cup” Jowers, died in 1963.

Survivors include sons Cal Jowers, Forest City, and Jerry Jowers, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, graveside, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Conder, pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Visitation: At the cemetery following the service. Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

James Eldridge Plyler

ALBEMARLE — James Eldridge Plyler, 70, 28314 Austin Road, died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at his home.

Born Oct. 7, 1929, in Stanly County, Mr. Plyler was a son of the late Essie Maude Morton and Wade Herman Plyler. A member of Plyler Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 10 years. He was a card tender at Wiscassett Mills.

Survivors include wife Ruth Dennis Plyler; sons Ronald Eldridge Plyler, New London, and Eric Lynn Plyler, Albemarle; sisters Ramelle Faulkner, Albemarle, and Jean Smith, New London; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Plyler Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Melton, the Rev. Sam Wilson and the Rev. Max Vanderburg. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The rest of the time, the family will be at the Austin Road home.

Burice Clinton Price

LANDIS — Burice Clinton Price, 77, 204 W. Fifth St., died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Integrated Health Services, Charlotte.

Born Sept. 20, 1922, in Union County, Mr. Price was a son of the late John Luther and Ella Griffin Price. He had retired from the Air National Guard in Charlotte after 27 years of service.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific theater from 1941 to 1945. He was also a Pearl Harbor survivor.

He was a member of Poston-Perkins VFW Post 8989, Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge and the Kannapolis Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star 349. He was also a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and deacon.

Survivors include wife Hazel Hooper Price; sons Wayne and Jeffery Price, both of Raleigh; daughters Lavada Forbis, Mooresville, and Felecia King, Kannapolis; brother Max Price, Kannapolis; sisters Betty Kennedy and Ruby Helms, both of Kannapolis; a half brother, the Rev. Luther Price, Parksdale, Miss; half sister Julia Pope, Mebane; stepbrothers Jennings Trull, Kannapolis, and Albright Trull, Columbia, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: The funeral was held at 8 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Leon Hawks, the Rev. Richard Keasler and the Rev. Coy Privette officiating. Burial was to be at 11 a.m. today in Carolina Memorial Park.

Zeb Roosevelt Talbert

CHINA GROVE — Zeb Roosevelt Talbert, 87, 55 Central Ave., died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at his home.

Born Oct. 28, 1912, in Albemarle, Mr. Talbert was a son of the late Gurley C. and Mattie Thompson Talbert. He was educated in the Albemarle schools. Retired from China Grove Cotton Mill, he was a member of South China Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Bethel Glover Talbert; sons Larry W. Talbert, Kannapolis, and Stephen R. Talbert, Landis; sister Geraldine Crisco, Albemarle; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, South China Grove Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Paula Judy. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of son Larry Talbert at 522 Wright St., Kannapolis.

Abraham Thomas, 78, Holly Leaf Apartments, 2205 Woodleaf Road, died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Longview Assisted Living Center in Morganton.

Kate Blendena Whitley

KANNAPOLIS — Kate Blendena Whitley, 90, 213 S. Rose Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 15, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center, Concord.

Born July 28, 1909, in Iredell County, Miss Whitley was a daughter of the late Daniel Durant and Vada Beaver Whitley. She had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sheet department, in 1975 after 50 years of service. She was a member of the Kannapolis Church of Christ.

Survivors include brother Don Davis, Concord, and sister Mary Eva Whitley Love, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Kirk Sams. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
