Herman Lambert

ALBEMARLE — Herman Lambert, 76, 24542 Endy Road, died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Born June 20, 1923, in Stanly County, Mr. Lambert was a son of the late Fetzer and Lilly Lowder Lambert. Retired from Wiscassett Mill Co., he was a member of Canton Baptist Church, VFW and Endy Optimist Club. He served aboard the USS Bunker Hill while in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include wife Arlene Tucker Lambert; son Frank Lambert, New London; daughter Brenda Lambert Baker, Albemarle; brother Grover Lambert, Albemarle; sisters Ruth Dick, Bertha Cagle and Mildred Barbee, all of Albemarle, and Victoria McLendon, Fayetteville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Canton Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Les Schofield. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m.Tuesday, Stanly Funeral Home.

Billie Stamper Leazer

Billie Stamper Leazer, Salisbury, died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

A.G. Lemly Jr.

LEXINGTON — Artless Garland Lemly Jr., 79, 375 Bethesda Road, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Dec. 23, 1920, in Davidson County, Mr. Lemly was a son of the late Artless Garland and Dovie Annie Warfford Lemly. He retired from L.S. Craver Construction and had operated the former Phillips 66 Service Station on Main Street. He had also been an insurance agent for Life of Virginia.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served during World War II. Mr. Lemly was a member of North Lexington Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and director of the outreach program.

Survivors include wife Bennie Lemly; daughters Martha Ann Lemly Williamson, Trinity, and Katie L. Lemly, of the home; sons A.G. Lemly III, Linwood, Robert N. Lemly, Lexington, and David F. Lemly, Randleman; sister Annie R. Owens, Southmont; brothers Reather Lemly, Faith, Raymond and Luther Lemly, both of Lexington, and Leroy Lemly, Southmont; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Forest Hill Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. David McBride.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Bethesa Road.

Virginia King McGee

CLEVELAND — Virginia King McGee, 81, 126230 Cool Springs Road, died Sunday (Jan. 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several months of serious illness.

Born May 24, 1918, in Statesville, Mrs. McGee was a daughter of the late Albert Belton and Hattie Claybrooks King. Educated in the Iredell County schools, she attended Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She retired as a custodian from West Rowan High School. A member of Knox Grove Baptist Church, she had served as church treasurer and choir director and was on the West Rowan Advisory Council.

Her husband, Willie Foster McGee, died in 1967, and a son, Early McGee, died Jan. 1, 1989.

Survivors include sister Doretha King Wilson, of the home; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Tina Barbee Melton

FOUR OAKS — Tina Lee Barbee Melton, 80, 1057 U.S. 701 S., died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Born April 3, 1919, in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late William Alexander and Dallie Helms Barbee. Retired, she volunteered over 5,000 hours with the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was active at First Baptist Church of Four Oaks, where she taught the New Century Sunday School Class.

Her husband, Grover Glenn Melton, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Glenn Thomas “Buddy” Melton, of the home; sisters Myrtle Burleson and Rosa Whitley, both of Albemarle, and Zula Rowland, Charlotte.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. John Norman. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Steve Whitley, a family friend, 355 Concord Road, Albemarle.

Dr. Joseph A. Ross

ALBEMARLE — Dr. Joseph Alderman Ross died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born March 18, 1926, in Wadesboro, Dr. Ross was a son of William Joyner and Elizabeth Alderman Ross. He entered the U.S. Army after graduating from Wadesboro High School. Two weeks before completing basic training, he was sent to Europe as a replacement at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. He served in a machine gun squad with the 273rd Regiment of the 69th Infantry Division from Jan. 1945 until the end of the war. He received the Combat Infantry Badge and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism.

After his discharge from the Army, he entered college and received a bachelor of arts degree from Duke University in 1950. In 1954, he received a doctor of medicine degree from Emory University. He did his internship and residency at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Ga, and was chief family practice resident at Greenville General Hospital, Greenville, S.C., from 1956-1957.

After moving to Albemarle, Dr. Ross practiced family medicine for 30 years. During that time he served as president of the staff of Stanly Memorial Hospital and of the Stanly County Medical Society. He closed his private practice in 1987 and went on to serve as medical officer of the day at the Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury until he retired in 1993 after heart surgery.

A daughter, Debra Sue Ross, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife of 47 years Betty Hargrove Ross; son David Joyner Ross, Charlotte; other daughters Cynthia Ann Ross, Greensboro, and Mrs. Bill (Carolyn Elizabeth Ross) Tilley, Ramseur; brother Charles Ross, Polkton; and two grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Central United Methodist Church, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.
