Verna Childers Hubbard

KANNAPOLIS — Georgia Verna Childers Hubbard, 87, formerly of 111 S. Rose Ave., died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at Caremoor Retirement Center.

Born Sept. 22, 1912, in Alexander County, Mrs. Hubbard was the daughter of the late Gill and Nimo Chapman Childers. She was retired from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 Sewing Room. Mrs. Hubbard was a member of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church.

Her husband, Lawrence P. Hubbard, and sons Jimmy Guy Hubbard and Wayne Hubbard, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Bill Hubbard, Kannapolis; brothers Escar Childers and Atwell Childers, both of Taylorsville; sisters Hessie Harrington, Edna Walker and Estelle Pennell, all of Taylorsville; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Stan Welch and Mike Hubbard. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Memorials: Blackwelder Park Baptist Church Building Fund, 2204 Summitt Ave., Kannapolis, N.C. 28081.

 

Alex Kelsey

KANNAPOLIS — Alex J. Kelsey, 71, 432 Oak Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at University Hospital, Charlotte.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Robert L. Leonard Jr.

LEXINGTON — Robert Lee Leonard Jr., 71, River Drive, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at home.

Born Oct. 6, 1928, in Davidson County, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Myrtle Hill Leonard. A member of Lake View Baptist Church, he was retired from Grinnell Fire Protection Systems. He was owner and operator of Leonard & Leonard, Woodle Masonary Construction Co. for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Bettie Cato Leonard; sons Butch Leonard, Salisbury, and Carey Leonard, of the home; daughter Kathie Craver, Reedy Creek; sisters Lorine Woodle, Linwood, and Nancy Elliott, Tyro; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Chris Hawks. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home.

Tina Lee Melton

FOUR OAKS — Tina Lee Barbee Melton, infant, died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Lucy Mae Miller

NEW LONDON — Lucy Mae Miller, 77, 38054 U.S. 52 N., died Saturday (June 15, 2000) at her home.

Born Oct. 14, 1921, in Stanly County, Ms. Miller was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Treece Miller. A1939 graduate of Albemarle High School, she was a beautician at New London Beauty Shop for 37 years. She was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and taught Sunday School in the Junior department.

Survivors include son Charles Thomas Miller, Edmond, Okla.; brothers Lowell Miller and Horace Miller, both of New London; sisters Estell Hatley, Albemarle, Jessie Broughton and Joycie Miller, all of New London; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Prospect Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Johnson. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday, Stanly Funeral Home.

Memorials: Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. 1st St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

 

Pitts H. Satterwhite

Pitts H. Satterwhite, 100, Salisbury, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Daniel Wilson Schenk

Daniel Wilson Schenk, 70, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2000) at his home.

Born May 14, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Schenk was the son of the late Raymond Ward Schenk and Mary Graham Schenk. Educated in Rowan County schools, he retired after 38 years with the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post.

His wife, Betty Stricker Schenk, died Jan. 12, 1999.

Survivors include son Danny Schenk, Salisbury; daughters Crystal Cowan, Salisbury, and Wanda Thomas, Union Grove; brothers Arnold Schenk, Wilbert Schenk, Gilbert Schenk, Norman Schenk and Cecil Schenk, all of Salisbury, Clyde Schenk, Norfolk, Va., and Don Schenk, Kure Beach; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Revs. Gene Bruce, Scott Ireland and Tom Thomas. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Memorials: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5202 Mooresville Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28147.
