Obituaries

             

Edith Lucille Bryant

The funeral will be held Saturday for Edith Lucille “Eat” Bryant, 37, 1301 Lakewood Apartments, who died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 12, 1962, in Salisbury, she was a daughter of John L. Bryant of East Spencer and the late Gladys Sloan Bryant. She was educated at Salisbury High School.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include son Amarillo Bryant, Salisbury; daughters Demetrius Bryant, Salisbury, and Gladys Bryant, East Spencer; and sisters Wilma Millsaps, Black Mountain, Beverly Jones, East Spencer, and Phyllis Ponder, Salisbury.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, A. R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. D.S. Houston. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Phyllis Ponder, 200 W. Lafayette St.

 

Martha Suddeth Carpenter

CHINA GROVE — Martha Suddeth Carpenter, 72, 68 Walnut St., died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at her home.

Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Jefferson, Ga., Mrs. Carpenter was a daughter of the late Fred N. and Amanda Waddell Suddeth. A graduate of China Grove High School, she had retired from China Grove Cotton Mill. She was a member of South China Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Cecil Carpenter; and brother William L. Suddeth, Harrisburg.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, South China Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on Walnut Street.

Rachel Boyle Caudill, 102

Rachel Boyle Caudill, 102, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after a brief illness.

Born June 24, 1897, in Gill, Mass., Mrs. Caudill was a daughter of the late William and Helen Hale Boyle. Educated in the Gill schools, she was a retired teacher. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, the Rev. Osco Vere Caudill, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Rachel Phillips, Charlotte, and Helen Barranger, Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dan M. Thornton, pastor, Second Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: None.

Rad Foster Dedmon

Rad Foster Dedmon, 81, Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Frances Ratledge Johnson

MOCKSVILLE — Frances Clydeen Ratledge Johnson, 60, Hardison Street, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home,Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 7, 1939, in Davie County, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Henry Clyde and Mary Ella Tutterow Ratledge. A homemaker, she was a Baptist.

Her husband, Cecil Johnson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Cecil Johnson Jr. and Vic Johnson, both of Advance, and Michael Johnson, Clemmons; daughter Mrs. Bobby (Pamela J.) Davis, Mocksville; brother Jerry Ratledge, Mocksville; sisters Mary Reavis and Bonnie Mayhew, both of Mocksville; six grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.

Services: 7 p.m. Saturday, Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, Advance, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Craddock. Burial, 2 p.m. Sunday, Gospel Baptist Church.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Davie Funeral Home is in charge.

Lena Jones

CHINA GROVE — The funeral was today for Lena Jones, 82, 1114 S. Main St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at China Grove Retirement Center.

Born May 10, 1917, in Dillon, S.C., Miss Jones was a daughter of the late Will and Ida Jones. She had worked as a sweeper at Locke Mills.

Graveside services were to be held at 10 this morning at Sunset Cemetery, Concord.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord, was in charge.

 

Allen Carson Miller

KANNAPOLIS — Allen Carson Miller, 75, 512 Coach St., died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Rena Duncan Sims

CHARLOTTE —

Born Jan. 12, 1928, in Fort Mill, S.C., Mrs. Sims was a daughter of the late Fred D. and Clara Eller Duncan. Educated in the Fort Mill and Rowan County schools, she attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer. She was a domestic worker.

Survivors include husband John C. Sims; son John C. Sims Jr., Charlotte; daughter Beverly S. Pendergrass, Charlotte; brothers Ronell Wine, Fort Mill, S.C., and Fred Duncan Jr., Salisbury; sister Minnie Lee Duncan Jones, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Beasley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J. Glenn Gerald III. Burial, Beatties Ford Memorial Garden.

 

Mary Alice Williams

MOCKSVILLE — Mary Alice Hosch Williams, 85, 3890 Highway 601 S., died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at her home after three years of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1914, in Commerce, Ga., Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late Willie and Maudie Johnson Hosch. Educated in the Davie County schools, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was mother of the church, deaconess, Sunday school teacher, president of the Missionary Society and a member of the choir. She was also a member of the NAACP and a former member of Eastern Star, Corinthian Lodge 17.

She was preceded in death by a son, who died at birth, and a daughter, Othelia W. White.

Survivor include husband Otis L. Williams; daughters Mrs. Andrew (Annette W.) Whitted, Salisbury, and Mrs. Richard (M. Novella)Snyder, Kernersville; brothers Julius, Robert and James Hosch, all of Salisbury, and Ammer Hosch, Mocksville; and sisters Hazel Hosch, Erie, Pa., Mrs. Elbert (Sallie M.)Cage, Detroit, Mich., Bernice Peebles, Winston-Salem, Gwendolyn Hunter, Taylorsville, and Mrs. Charles (Doris)Greer, Salisbury.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, New Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas White Jr. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Mitchell &Fair Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.
