Annie Cooper Cloer, 100

The funeral will be Friday for Annie “Miss Annie”Cooper Cloer, 100, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at her home after two years of declining health and a month of serious illness.

Born Jan. 8, 1900, in Stanly County, Mrs. Cloer was a daughter of the late John and Judy Hudson Cooper. Educated in the Stanly County schools, she was a homemaker. She had retired as a patient helper at Rowan Memorial Hospital, now Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The oldest member of Trinity Wesleyan Church, she taught the King’s Daughters’ Sunday School Class for more than 30 years and was a member of the Silver Liners fellowship group.

Her husband, Henry Cloer, died Jan. 1, 1970. She was also preceded in death by two sons: Russell C. Cloer, who died Oct. 1, 1997; and James Cloer, who died July 27, 1967.

Survivors include daughters Mrs. C.H. (Edna)Winecoff, Salisbury, Mrs. Wayne (Thelma) Brown, Marion, Ind., and Mrs. Stan (Mary) Jonaitis, Granville, Ohio; sister Mrs. O.F. (Amy) Daughdrill, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, Trinity Wesleyan Church, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, pastor, the Rev. W. Lee Cockerill, the Rev. Wilson Harris and the Rev. Dallas Saunders. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Gerald Littleton Dennis

ALBEMARLE — Gerald Littleton Dennis, 78, 39057 Kemp Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at his home.

Born Nov. 4, 1921, in Stanly County, Mr. Dennis was a son of the late Enoch Sinclair and Lou Etta Drye Dennis. He had worked at Wiscassett Mills as a drawing hand. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Bertha Mae Dennis Dennis; son Dean Dennis, Albemarle; daughters Nancy Page, Patricia Dennis and Virginia Hopkins, all of Albemarle, and Nezzie “Etta” Hopkins and Janet Hargett, both of New London; brother Allen Dennis, Biscoe; sister Mary Alice Gragg, Albemarle; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Palestine Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Carol Flack. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, HartsellFuneral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Kemp Road.

 

Edward M. Eberhardt

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Edward Mahlon Eberhardt, 78, formerly of Strider Circle, who died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born June 25, 1921, in Athens, Ga., Mr. Eberhardt was a son of the late James Edward and Clarice Richardson Eberhardt. He had retired several years ago from Cannon Mills, Plant 1.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Enochville. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

His wife, Ila Mae Wallace Eberhardt, died April 23, 1996.

Survivors include stepdaughter Bonita Adams, Jarrettsville, Md.; stepsons Charles Eddie Sims, Salisbury, and Bobby Allen Sims, Travelers Rest, S.C.; and a number of step-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2:30 p.m. Friday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Tom Huneycutt.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home.

 

Elizabeth Hand Hill

MOORESVILLE — Elizabeth Hand Hill, 79, 225 Presbyterian Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at her home.

Born April 13, 1920, in Spartanburg, S.C., Mrs. Hill was a daughter of the late Thomas and Betty Absher Hand. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Raymond W. Hill, died in 1994.

Survivors include sons Sam D. Hill, Mooresville, and Michael Hill, Cleveland; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Rockwell Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dewane Barber. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

James Nelson Honeycutt

MOORESVILLE — James Nelson Honeycutt, 76, Mackwood Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at his home.

Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Honeycutt was a son of the late James Ace and Mary Ivey Lilley Honeycutt. He had retired after 33 years with Reeves Brothers/ Foamex, Cornelius. He also farmed.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he received a Purple Heart for injuries received during World War II. He attended Community Baptist Church, Mount Mourne. He was a member of the VFW.

Survivors include wife Lois Oates Honeycutt, whom he married Feb. 14, 1942; sons James Ronnie Honeycutt and Dennis Craig Honeycutt, both of Mooresville; brothers Joe and David Honeycutt, both of Mooresville, and Clark Honeycutt, Huntersville; sisters Effie Honeycutt and Edna Whitley, both of Mooresville, and Cordie Jordan, Davidson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Community Baptist Church, Mount Mourne, conducted by the Rev. James R. Speece. Burial, church cemetery.

Frances Greene Hord

Frances Idolene Lester Greene Hord, 87, Autumn Care of Salisbury, formerly of Shelby, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born in Franklin County, Mrs. Hord was a daughter of the late Jefferson Wright and Blanche Strickland Lester. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Mulls Memorial Baptist Church and a former member of the Shelby Women’s Club, the VFWAuxiliary and the Home Extension Club.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Onnie M. Greene, and her second husband, Lawrence R. Hord. A son, Lawrence Greene, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Carolyn Phillips, Marietta, Ga., and Mrs. George (Blanche)Glover, Salisbury; brother Willard W. Lester, Forest City; sisters Ruth L. Grigg, Shelby, and Minnie Barnes, Boiling Springs; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, Shelby, conducted by the Rev. Irvin Price. Burial, Cleveland Memorial Park, Shelby.

Leola Poplin Huneycutt

ALBEMARLE — Leola Virginia Poplin Huneycutt, 89, 115 St. Martin Road, Lot 1, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at her home.

Born March 2, 1910, in Stanly County, Mrs. Huneycutt was a daughter of the late George Alexander and Wincie Ellen Swaringen Poplin. She had worked as a comber machine operator at Wiscassett Mills. She was a lifetime member of the Albemarle DAVAuxiliary.

She was preceded in death by a son, McDurwood “Mac” Russell, and two grandchildren.

Survivors include husband Earl J. Huneycutt; daughter Betty R. Burleson, Albemarle; son Bobby Russell, Siler City; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Delane Burris, the Rev. Curran Welch and the Rev. Martha Welch. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Pauline Jones

KANNAPOLIS — Pauline Jones, 83, Tuckaseegee Road, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

David Laws

The funeral will be Friday for David Laws, 74, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after years of declining health.

Born Oct. 20, 1925, in Forest City, Mr. Laws, a son of the late Geder and Margie Case Laws, was educated in the Charlotte schools. A carpenter, he had worked for Daniels Construction. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include wife Mildred Carter Laws, whom he married April 7, 1951; daughters Judy L. Brown, Patti Blue, Becky Yost and Melanie Knox, all of Salisbury; brother Lloyd “Deany” Laws, Kings Mountain; sister Pauline Moore, Hickory; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by a VAMedical Center chaplain. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight,Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Zenus Elwood McCollum

CHINA GROVE — Zenus Elwood “Big Mac” McCollum, 68, 103 Crystal Creek Drive, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at his home.

Born Dec. 30, 1931, in Yadkin County, Mr. McCollum was the son of Ralph and Betty Harris McCollum. Retired after 37 years with Merita Bakery, he also owned and operated Mac’s Auto in China Grove.

A son, Mitchell McCollum, and a daughter, Lisha Rena McCollum, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Roy McCollum, Mocksville, and Eddie McCollum, Winston-Salem; daughters Mrs. Bill (Patricia)Jenkins, Elkin, and Mrs. Ronnie (Melissa) Huie, Winston-Salem; companion Jackie E. Heilig, of the home; sister Lillie Faye Campbell, Yadkinville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Union Grove Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-1 p.m.Friday at the church.

Jack C. Moore

KANNAPOLIS — Jack Clarence Moore, 83, 806 Wright Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Born Nov. 5, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Moore was a son of the late Zachariah H. and Kezzie Williams Moore. Retired since 1982 from the Cannon Mills machine shop, he was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.

His first wife, Virginia Gaston Moore, died May 27, 1962.

Survivors include wife Florence Lutz Moore; daughters Susan Moore Compton and Jann Moore Kirkman, both of Kannapolis; sons Zackie L. Moore and Carlos J. Moore, both of Kannapolis, and Marc A. Moore, Raleigh; sisters Myrtle M. Hudson, Kannapolis, and Mary Frances Beaver, Rock Hill, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, Franklin Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Townsend. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

James David Morrow

CREEDMOOR — James David Morrow, 49, 154 Hunters Trail, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at DurhamRegional Hospital.

Born June 21, 1950, in Albemarle, Mr. Morrow was the son of the late William “Bill” Whitfield and Margaret Ellen Jolly Morrow. He was an automotive service manager at Michael Jordan RPM, Nissan.

Survivors include brother Whit Morrow, ChapelHill; and sister Ellen Morrow Whitley, Albemarle.

Blanche A. Perkins

CONCORD — Blanche Alexander Perkins, 97, formerly of 1315 Winecoff School Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Kannapolis . She had retired in 1976 after 40 years at CannonMills, washcloth department.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home,Kannapolis. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Mary Ruth Lambert Poole

ROCKWELL — Mary Ruth Lambert Poole, 66, Rockwell, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several days of serious illness.

Born March 21, 1933, in Rowan County, Mrs. Poole was a daughter of Evola Miller Lambert, Rockwell, and the late Gurley D. Lambert. A graduate of Rockwell High School, she was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include son Donnie W. Poole, Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Tommy (Glenda) Jones and Pam Koontz, both of Salisbury, Mrs. Wayne (Sharon) Holder, Catawba, and Mrs. Larry (Cindy)Harmon, Rockwell; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Graham, pastor, Canaan Baptist Church. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Cindy Harmon of Link Street.

 

Dwight Kellis Poplin

ALBEMARLE — The funeral was held this morning for Dwight Kellis Poplin, 75, 33426 Old Salisbury Road, who died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Born June 30, 1924, in Stanly County, Mr. Poplin was a son of the late Gillis and Lola Kellis Poplin. A retired carpenter, he was a member of Porter United Methodist Church.

Survivors include sons Dwight and Tony Poplin, both of Norwood, and Jimmy Turner, Albemarle; daughters Bonnie Burleson and Wanda Turner Honeycutt, both of Albemarle; and five grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 11 this morning at Porter Cemetery, Norwood. The Rev. Ronnie Vaughn officiated.

Stanly Funeral Home was in charge.

 

Lee Ira Ratliff

ALBEMARLE — Lee Ira Ratliff, 77, 227 Leonard Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at the Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Born Aug. 16, 1922, in Stanly County, Mr. Ratliff was a son of the late Jacob and Hannah Snuggs Ratliff. Educated in the Anson County schools, he had retired from B&D Print. He had earlier worked at Youngs Manufacturing, Norwood, and Collins &Aikman and Wiscassett Mills, both of Albemarle.

He was a member of Saints Delight Church, where he served on the Usher Board and the Kitchen Committee. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include wife Myrna KendallRatliff; sons Robert L. Ratliff, Kannapolis, Lee I. Ratliff Jr., Atlanta, Rickey D. and Cayetano Ratliff, both of Albemarle, and Denatus Ratliff, Polkton; daughters Peggy Watson,Henderson, and Dorothy Ratliff, Albemarle; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Saints Delight Church, conducted by Elder James E. Richardson. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Dorothy Garner Reid

MOORESVILLE — Dorothy Marie Garner Reid, 68, East Wilson Avenue, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Lake Norman RegionalMedical Center.

Born Jan. 20, 1931, in Spartanburg County, S.C., Mrs. Reid was a daughter of the late Clyde Walter and Marie Waters Garner. A homemaker, she was a former member of the Mooresville Artist Guild. She was also active with the Mooresville Senior Citizens Group and the AARP.

Her husband, Billy Worth Reid, and a son, Billy Randal “Randy”Reid, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Timothy Mark Reid and Christopher Robin Reid, both of Mooresville; daughter Annette Reid Carson, also of Mooresville; brother Robert W. Garner, Walkertown; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Christy. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Melvin Similton

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Melvin Similton, 75, 200 Lowe Ave., who died Monday (Jan. 10, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 28, 1924, in Iredell County, Mr. Similton was the son of the lateJoseph Similton and Lula Bell Knox Similton. He had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon.

Survivors include daughters Mrs. Michael (Ella)Rice and Mrs. Reginald (Tanya)Kirk, both of Kannapolis, Mrs. George (Debra)Gordon, Charlotte; son Marlon Similton, Salisbury; sister Lola Bell Washington, Kannapolis; brothers Lawrence Similton, Statesville, Edgar Similton, China Grove, Elmo Similton, Concord, and Joseph Similton, Kannapolis; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Kathryn B. Spencer

CONCORD — Kathryn Barnhardt Spencer, 81, 496 Camrose Circle N.E., died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at her home. Her late husband, M.F. Spencer, was a former Salisbury resident.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday,Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: Noon-1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James W. Tennent

KANNAPOLIS — James W. Tennent, 82, 301 York Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 24, 1917, in Royston, Ga., Mr. Tennent was a son of the late Gilbert and Mamie Tennent. Retired from Cannon Mills, sewing room, he attended Worldwide House of Prayer Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include wife Mary Frances Fryer Tennent; sons John and James Tennent, Kannapolis; daughters Linda Hooks, Shelby Bostian and Carol Thames, all of Kannapolis; stepdaughter Lisa Moore, Raleigh; sisters Mary Ginn, Lavonia, Ga., and Eula Sorrow, Cramerton; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Billy Payne.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

David Jackie Thompson

CHINA GROVE — David Jackie Thompson, 54, 1165 Flat Rock Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a year of declining health.

Born Jan. 17, 1945, in Baltimore, Mr. Thompson was a son of the late Hural and Elizabeth Thompson. A self-employed independent electrical contractor, he was educated at Marathon High School in Baltimore.

He was a member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis. He was a former member of Mount Nebo Shrine No. 3 and Eureka Lodge No. 45, where he was a 32nd-degree Mason.

Survivors include wife Bettye Murdock Thompson; son David J. Thompson Jr., of the home; daughters Summa Thompson, Raleigh, and Cheryl Stevenson, Atlanta; and three grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.
