MOUNT ULLA It was the type of game weve come to expect from the West Rowan
girls basketball team. The Falcons jumped on
Sun Valley quickly, grabbed an insurmountable lead by halftime and recorded another easy
victory, this one 61-35.
It was also the type of game weve come to
expect from Kari Schenk.
The senior guard led the team in points with 18.
She led the team in steals with eight. And she even led the team in rebounds with seven.
Kari played really great tonight, said coach
Angie Waddell, who saw her team improve to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the South Piedmont
Conference. Shes definitely our leader out there.
Six different players got in on the scoring in the
first quarter as West romped to a 22-5 lead after eight minutes. The Big Three of Schenk,
Kate Goodman and Sara Pieper all had four.
In the second period, Schenk hit four baskets, all
on layups.
Along with junior guard Kristen McNeely, she
harrassed the Spartans into 10 first quarter turnovers and 19 for the half.
Kristen played a wonderful game,
Waddell said. Shes at that size where she can sneak in there and get some
steals. And she never tires out.
Waddell was also pleased with the passing in the
first half. Pieper, the assist machine, dished out four in the first half while Schenk and
McNeely each had two.
When Danielle Scearce and Schenk scored to end the
second period, West led 37-13.
Defense keyed it, Waddell said.
Defense is our boost of energy. It gets us going when we can get some steals or
deflections. And its exciting for the fans to watch.
Sun Valley actually scored nine of the first 12
points in the third quarter to get within 40-22 but West stopped its turnovers (it had
eight in the quarter) and went on to score the last 11 points of the third. Jenny Sloop
came off the bench to score four straight points in that surge.
When Schenk fed Pieper for a three-point play, it
was 59-29 and those two took a seat to a rousing ovation.
Everyone follows Karis lead,
Waddell said. She goes 100 percent every minute of the game.
When Ashley Shaver, a senior, scored the final
basket, she became the eighth Falcon to put the ball in the hoop.
I was pleased with everyones
contribution, Waddell said.
