Hazel M. Barraclough

BROCKWAY, Pa. — Hazel M. Barraclough, 66, 1303 Main St., sister of Judith Martin, Salisbury, N.C., died Saturday (Jan. 1, 2000) at her home.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Moorhead United Methodist Church. Burial was at Beechtree Cemetery.

Carlson Funeral Home was in charge.

Memorials: Hahne Regional Cancer Center, 100 Hospital Ave., DuBois, Pa. 15801.

 

Laura Plott Beck

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Laura Plott Beck, 84, formerly of Becktown Road, who died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at Davie Village.

Born June 25, 1915, in Davie County, Mrs. Beck was a daughter of the late John C. and Lula Wood Plott. A homemaker and caregiver, she had also kept children in her home. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Clyde C. Beck, died Sept. 12, 1981.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Jerusalem Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

 

Hazel Bailey Daniel

The funeral will be Saturday for Hazel Bailey Daniel, 80, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at her home.

Born Feb. 8, 1919, in Rowan County, Mrs. Daniel was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Vesta Lefler Bailey. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Cornelia Kirk Bible Class and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the church’s administrative board and president of her Sunday school class.

Her husband, Herman W. Daniel, died Aug. 24, 1991.

Survivors include son H.C. Daniel,Granite Quarry; daughter Carole Anne Hopkins, Rockwell; brother James A. Bailey, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Park Avenue United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Conder, pastor, the Rev. Bobby Beck, former pastor, and the Rev. Chuck Brawley, pastor, Faith Baptist Church, Faith. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Gabriel Shawn Eanes

Gabriel Shawn Eanes, 16, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Jimmy Carl Eury

CONCORD — Jimmy Carl Eury, 51, 396 Honeycutt Drive S.E., died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born July 21, 1948, in Stanly County, Mr. Eury was a son of the late Lester Carl and Queen Victoria Mauldin Eury. A member of Red Cross Baptist Church, he was a home and industrial painter with R.J. Fisher Construction.

Survivors include sons Rodney and Dusty Eury, both of Oakboro; brothers Richard Eury, Albemarle, and Bud and Sonny Eury, both of Norwood; and sisters Grovene Mabry, Albemarle, Carolyn Kimrey, Thomasville, and Cassie Hazlewood, Thomasville.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cottonville Baptist Church, Norwood, conducted by the Rev. Reese Linnell and the Rev. Marvin Huneycutt. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of W.G. Eury, 16571 Hatley-Burris Road, Oakboro.

 

Mildred Peeler Hoffner

Mildred Inez Peeler Hoffner, 87, National City, Calif., formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at her home.

Born March 23, 1912, in Faith, Mrs. Hoffner was a daughter of the late George Alexander and Daisy Louise Hartman Peeler. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a graduate of Catawba College.

A retired elementary school teacher, she had taught in North Carolina and California. She was a member of First United Church of Christ.

Her husband, Arthur Hinson Hoffner, died Oct. 3, 1987.

Survivors include son Arthur H. Hoffner, Spring Valley, Calif.; sister Vivian Snider, Salisbury; and one grandson.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David L. Crook, pastor, First United Church of Christ. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Gene Dewey Isenhour

Gene Dewey Isenhour, 59, Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health.

Born Feb. 10, 1940, in Hickory, Mr. Isenhour was a son of J.E. “Snow” and Zora Carswell Isenhour of Salisbury. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he served in both the Merchant Marine and the N.C. National Guard. He was a self-employed painting contractor.

His companion of 30 years, Teressa Snider, died in November 1998.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include stepson Allen Snider, Salisbury; stepdaughter Mary Ann Shook, Salisbury; brother Edward Isenhour, Salisbury; and sister Ruth Barringer, Hickory.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home MemorialChapel, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, pastor, Trinity Wesleyan Church. Burial, Fairview Cemetery, Hickory.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Clayborne Stanford King

The Rev. Clayborne Stanford King, 93, Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Rowan County, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Bethany Lutheran Home, Dayton, Ohio.

Daisy Brewer Meacham

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Daisy Mae Brewer Meacham, 84, formerly of 4730 Rainbow Drive, who died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a short illness.

Born Aug. 26, 1915, in Athens, Ga., Mrs. Meacham was a daughter of the late Henry B. and Maggie Glaze Brewer. She had retired in 1983 from CannonMills, Plant 1, No. 6 weave room. She had been a cosmetologist in her early life.

Her husband, Harold R. Meacham, died June 25, 1983.

Survivors include daughters Peggy H. Butler, Mooresville, and Becky Meacham, Kannapolis; son Harold Meacham Jr., White Stone, Va.; sister Nell Jefferson, Statesville; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Peggy Butler, 220 Longfield Drive, Deerfield section, Enochville community, Mooresville.

W. Hoyt Safrit

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Saturday for William Hoyt Safrit, 76, 711 N. Main St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 18, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Safrit was a son of the late Albert Floyd and Gertie Foil Safrit. A graduate of China Grove High School, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Appalachian State Teachers College.

He was a professor of voice at Appalachian State Teachers College from 1950 until his retirement in 1989. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where he was a former music director.

Survivors include sister Frances Safrit Chapman, Cary.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. David Swygert. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30-2:45 a.m. Saturday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Frances Hager Stewart

MOORESVILLE — Frances Artie Hager Stewart, 92, Hager Lake Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at her home.

Born Aug. 28, 1907, in Iredell County, Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Hattie Hill Hager. She was a charter member of Abundant Life Christian Center, formerly Community Foursquare Church. She had retired in 1972 after 50 years with Burlington Industries.

Her husband of 68 years, Robert William Stewart, died in January 1995.

Survivors include son Glenn William Stewart, Mooresville; sisters Edna Robertson and Rachel Schnauz, both of Mooresville, and Margaret Armstrong, Davidson; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Abundant Life Christian Center, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Smith and the Rev. Samuel Pierce. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Mildred Viar Frye Coggins

MOORESVILLE — Mildred Viar Frye Coggins, 78, Mount Ulla Highway, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at her home.

Born Oct. 24, 1921, in Amherst County, Va., Mrs. Coggins was a daughter of the late George Edward and Mary Elizabeth Jordan Viar. She had retired as a clerk at Burlington Industries after 35 years of service. She was a member of Triplett United Methodist Church and the Mooresville Women of the Moose Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Garland Winfred Frye, and her second husband, Roy Glenn Coggins.

Survivors include sons Wayne Frye, Charlotte, and Mike Frye and Tommy Coggins, both of Mooresville; daughter Lisa Coggins Mills, Mooresville; brothers Arthur Viar, South Boston, Va., Edward Viar, Lynchburg, Va., Alvin Seay, Pineville, and Garnett Seay, San Antonio, Texas; sisters Shirley Davis, Lansing, Mich., and Lois Ferrell, Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Ola Russell Hudson

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Ola Russell Hudson, 82, formerly of 2128 W. C St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, following a short illness.

Born April 16, 1917, in Wilkes County, Mrs. Hudson was a daughter of the late William Carson and Lillie Caroline Fortner Russell. She owned and operated Ola’s Beauty Shop from 1961 until her retirement in 1996. Prior to that, she worked for Cannon Mills in the Plant 1 cutting room. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Harold E. Hudson; son Alvin L. Hudson, Kannapolis; brothers Clifton C. and Henry Clay Russell, both of Wilkes County, and Velcer Dewitt Russell, Kannapolis; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of grandson Chris Hudson at 2128 W. C St.

 

Ethel Morgan Payne

KANNAPOLIS — Ethel Irene Morgan Payne, 81, 1302 Martha St., died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at her home following a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 7, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Payne was a daughter of the late John L. and Mary Magdaline Gaskey Payne. Retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, spinning room, she had been a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.

Her husband, Chalmer Glenn Payne, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Nancy Cook Brown, Landis; brothers Roy Morgan, Landis, Alfred Morgan, Kannapolis, and Carl Morgan, Salisbury; sisters Mrs. Lewis (Viola) Utley, Concord, and Mrs. Jack (Mable) Anderson and Della Kluttz, both of Kannapolis; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Utley and Dr. Forbis Kivett. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Ruth Shirley Sloop

KANNAPOLIS — Ruth Shirley Sloop, 79, 319 Ruth Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born Feb. 9, 1920, in Gaston County, Mrs. Sloop was a daughter of the late Earnest L. and Lillie Mae Rabb Jones. She had retired as station manager of the Jackson Park branch of the U.S. Postal Service. She was a charter member of New Hope Lutheran church.

Her husband, Gilbert Roy Sloop, died April 2, 1999.

Survivors include daughter Suzanne Sloop Mattox, Kannapolis; son Gilbert Roger Sloop, Kannapolis; sister Mrs. James. (Grace) Benton, Oak Hill, Fla.; brother H. Eugene Jones, Dallas, N.C.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, New Hope Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Kovitch. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of her daughter at 2205 Woodlawn St.

Bridgett Renee Springs

Bridgett Renee Springs, 33, 1920 Bost St., died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 16, 1966, in Cabarrus County, Ms. Springs was a daughter of Charles Springs, Oregon, and Francena W. Perry, Kannapolis. She was a member of United Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include daughter Courtney Renee Sigil of the home; sons Sanchez A. Nelson and Demario A. Archie, both of the home; sister Venevia C. Campbell, Kannapolis; and brother Corey L. Springs, Kannapolis.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, United Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Jones. Burial Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of her mother at 516 Wright St., Kannapolis.

Norma Gudger Mills

MOORESVILLE — Norma Gudger Mills, 76, Wedgewood Drive, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Lake Norman RegionalMedical Center.

Born July 28, 1923, in Mooresville, Mrs. Mills was a daughter of the late Minford and Ada Brawley Gudger. She had retired from Burlington Industries, where she worked in quality control. She was a member of Central UnitedMethodist Church.

Survivors include husband Mark P. Mills, whom she married Oct. 12, 1940; son Norman F. Mills, Hickory; daughter Mary Mack Benson, Mooresville; sister Rachel Carson, Charleston, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Phillip DeBerry. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.
