Laura P. Beck

MOCKSVILLE — Laura P. Beck, Becktown Road, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 1999) at Davie Village.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Steve Curtis Biesecker

LEXINGTON — Steve Curtis Biesecker, 55, 402 National Highway, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born March 27, 1944, in Davidson County, Mr. Biesecker was a son of the late Fred Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Tesh Biesecker. A self-employed painter, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a Methodist and a member of Amvets Post 760.

Survivors include sisters Emma Ruth Parker, Greensboro, and Elizabeth Ann Biesecker, Winston-Salem; and brothers Fritts L. Biesecker, Charlotte, and Robert R. and Jack E. Biesecker, both of Lexington.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Forest Hill Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. Billy Joe Leonard.

Visitation: 12:30-1:30 p.m. Friday, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at 209 Hillside Drive.

Jack Gracen Cecil

Jack Gracen Cecil, 63, 1010 St. Paul’s Church Road, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health.

Born Nov. 2, 1936, in Rowan County, Mr. Cecil was a son of the late Arnold G. and Margaret Campbell Childress Cecil. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he served two stints in the U.S. Army.

Retired from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, he was a member of Spencer Moose Lodge 2019, Legion of the Moose 158 and Hudson-Tatum-Miller VFWPost 3006.

Survivors include wife Effie Naomi Cowles Cecil; sons Ricky D. and Michael W. Cecil, both of Salisbury; daughter Marguerite M.Sackett, Salisbury; brothers Randell H. Childress, Lexington, and Kenny and Arthur Childress, both of Salisbury; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Ethel Bamberg, VA chaplain. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Minnie Wilson Couch

LEXINGTON — Minnie Belle Wilson Tysinger Couch, 78, 18 Hackney St., died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at High Point Regional Hospital, High Point.

Born Oct. 21, 1921, in Davidson County, Mrs. Couch was a daughter of the late Leonard and Mintie Gordon Wilson. She was a charter member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Willie James Tysinger, died in August 1952, and her second husband, Grady Worth Couch, died in July 1978. She was also preceded in death by sons James Raeford Tysinger and Larry Wayne Tysinger.

Survivors include son Autry Ray Tysinger Jr., Lexington; and a grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Peterson and the Rev. Larry Cope. Burial, Clarksbury United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday,Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Ray Tysinger, 19 Hackney St.

Hazel Bailey Daniel

Hazel Bailey Daniel, 80, Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at her home.

Edna Webster Fink

FAITH — Edna Webster Fink, 84, Faith, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Sept. 29, 1915, in Alexander County, Mrs. Fink was a daughter of the late Thala Robinette and Ernest D. Webster. She had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, washcloth department.

She was a member of Faith American Legion Post 327 Auxiliary and Faith Lutheran Church, where she was active in WELCA.

Survivors include husband Lloyd Hubert “Roy” Fink, whom she married Oct. 10, 1947; and sister Bessie W. Overcash, China Grove.

Services:2 p.m. Friday, Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Keith and Judy Copeland, pastors. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Arla Wolfe Hand

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Arla Wolfe Hand, mother of Jennifer Collins, Salisbury, N.C., died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000).

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight and 10:15-10:45 a.m. Friday at J.F. Floyd Mortuary.

Christine Harris

DEFIANCE, Ohio — Christine Harris, 70, a former resident of Gold Hill, N.C., died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at her home in Defiance.

Born Sept. 21, 1929, in Germany, Mrs.Harris was the daughter of the late Anton and Maria Etgen. A homemaker, she had worked as a domestic.

Her husband, Hansel Harris, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughterMrs. Terrance (Mary Lou) Habegger, Defiance; son Thomas Shedd, Beaverton, Ore.; sisters Agnes and Annie, both of Germany; brother Hans Etgen, Balkhausn, Germany; and five granddaughters.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Mask-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home, conducted by Father David Tscheme. Burial will be in Germany.

Visitation: 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Ola Russell Hudson

KANNAPOLIS — Ola Russell Hudson, 82, 2128 West C. St., died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Gladys Burnette Laws

LEXINGTON — Gladys Burnette Laws, 81, 103-C Mount Moriah Manor, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Swain County, Mrs. Laws was a daughter of the late Fred and Mary Queen Burnette. A Baptist, she was a homemaker.

Her husband, Ralph L. Laws, whom she married in December 1935, died in September 1990.

Survivors include daughters Brenda Hoskins, Gainesville, Fla., Sue Watson and Jerlean Simmons, both of Lexington, and Debby Bland, Thomasville; sons Lesley and Max Laws, both of Lexington, Eulas Laws, Advance, Luther Laws, Linwood, and Jim Laws, Eaikon, Ky.; sister Ruth Barnes, Bryson City; brother Jay Burnette, Bryson City; 21 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services: Private services. Burial at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Lesley Laws, Old Salisbury Road.

Sallie Bobbith McCrimmon

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Sallie Lee Bobbith McCrimmon, 89, Autumn Care of Mocksville, who diedSunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at the nursing center after several years of declining health.

Born April 5, 1910, in Rowan County, Mrs. McCrimmon was educated in the Rowan County schools. A domestic worker, she was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Salisbury, and a former member of the Court of Calanthe and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include several nieces and a nephew.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Nilous Avery II. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Dasie Brewer Meacham

KANNAPOLIS — Dasie Brewer Meacham, 84, formerly of 4730 Rainbow Drive, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Terry Leon Medlin

MOUNT ULLA — Terry Leon Medlin, 43, 8355 Highway 801, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 3, 1956, in Charlotte, Mr. Medlin was a son of Jettye Smith Donaldson, Mount Ulla, and Troy Medlin, Charlotte. Educated in the Greensboro schools, he graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte.

Mr. Medlin was employed at West Rowan Middle School. A member of Knox Grove Baptist Church, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include son Zachari U. Evans, Salisbury; daughter Amy Medlin, Greensboro; brothers Timothy H. Medlin, Las Vegas, Michael and Lawrence E. Medlin, both of Salisbury, and Steven T. Medlin, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a half brother, Ron Medlin, Burlington.

The family will meet at the home of brother Michael Medlin, 816 W. Bank St., Salisbury.

Anthony Leroy Neely

BRONX, N.Y. — Anthony Leroy Neely, 42, Bronx, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Jacobi Hospital.

Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury, N.C. ,will be in charge of arrangements.

 

James Poland Ousley

James Poland Ousley, 82, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at the Salisbury VAMedical Center after eight months of declining health.

Born April 26, 1917, in Union County,Tenn., Mr. Ousley was a son of the late John Christian and Laura Nash Ousley. Educated in the Clay Township Schools in Kokomo, Ind., he served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He owned and operated K&N Poultry in Salisbury. He was a member of Haven Lutheran Church.

Survivors include son John C. “Mickey” Ousley, Granite Quarry; daughter Brenda Chambers, Salisbury; brother Duran Ousley, Kokomo, Ind.; sisters Helen Trefry, Spokane, Wash., and Pauline Weida, Midge Heltzel and Cardova Bersbach, all of Kokomo, Ind.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by a VAMedical Center chaplain.

Visitation: Noon-12:45 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Vestal William Potts

MOCKSVILLE — Vestal William Potts, 77, Calahan Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at the home of a daughter, Maxine Collins, Winston-Salem.

Born May 18, 1922, in Guilford County, Mr. Potts was a son of the late Jim and Lethia Bundy Potts. He had retired from Baker and Heritage Furniture Cos.

Survivors include another daughter, Donna Potts, Mocksville; sisters Lucille Sain, Mocksville, and Lillie Mae Gaither, Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Ward. Burial, Bear Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Justin David Powell

FAITH — The funeral will be Friday for Justin David Powell, 18, 4410 Mount Hope Church Road, who died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born April 30, 1981, in Salisbury, Mr. Powell was the son of A.D. and Sylvia “Jane” Kepley Powell of Faith. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a 1999 graduate of East Rowan High School.

He was employed with Salisbury Coatings. A member of Shiloh United Church of Christ and Boy Scout Troop 351, he had received his God and Country award.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother Arnold Dan “Danny” Powell Jr., China Grove; sister Mrs. Kraig (Sabrina Ann)Jansen, Concord; paternal grandparents J.D. and Ruby Jones Powell, Faith; and paternal great-grandmother Martha Jones, Faith.

Services: 11 a.m.Friday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev.Lawrence Bolick. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home on Mount Hope ChurchRoad.

William Hoyt Safrit

CHINA GROVE — William Hoyt Safrit, 76, 711 N. Main St., died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Odell Smith Slack

ALBEMARLE — Born Oct. 15, 1911, in Union County, Mrs. Slack was a daughter of the late Marshall Benton and Louise Hathcock Edwards. Retired as a packer at Cannon Mills, she was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church, Stanfield.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Fred Smith, and her second husband, Oren Daniel Slack.

Survivors include sons Bill Smith, Harrisburg, and Hal Smith, Albemarle; daughter Gloria Smith, Oakboro; stepsons Mickey Slack, Monroe, and Roger Slack, Albemarle; stepdaughter Kathy Rollins, St. Mary, Ga.; sister Buna High, Charlotte; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m Friday, Philadelphia Baptist Church, Stanfield, conducted by the Rev. Dwight Mabry and the Rev. Bob Gruver. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of son Hal Smith, 2044A Norton Road, Albemarle.

 

Melvin Eugene Vanhoy

ALBEMARLE —Melvin Eugene Vanhoy, 72, Albemarle, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Feb. 3, 1927, in Montgomery County, Mr. Vanhoy was a son of the late Lula Helms and Lock Vance Vanhoy. A retired auto mechanic, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of West Albemarle Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout leader and youth retreat worker.

Survivors include wife Lorene Fraley Vanhoy, Albemarle; daughters Sharon Barbee, Lexington, Janice Binkley, Statesville, and Faye Blalock, Albemarle; son Warren “Bud” Vanhoy, Rockwell; sisters Evelyn Mauldin, Norwood, and Ruth Miller, Richfield; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, West Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rob Roberts and the Rev. Mike Dunn. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Jasper Eugene Williams

MOORESVILLE —Jasper Eugene Williams, 69, Bailey Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville, after an extended illness.

Born April 21, 1930, in Lexington, he was a son of the late Jesse Franklin and Gurtha Elizabeth Curry Williams. Mr. Williams had retired from Troutman Shirt Co., where he worked in the shipping department.

Survivors include brothers Monroe J. Williams, Harold F. Williams and Ronald L. Williams, all of Mooresville; sisters Mary Lucille Russell, China Grove, Lona W. Cobb, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Beatrice W. Young and Barbara W. Brown, both of Mooresville.

Services:Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Glenwood Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Michael A. Macdonald.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Friday, Cavin Funeral Home.
