Obituaries

           
Homer Lucious Agner

The funeral will be Friday for Homer Lucious Agner, 78, Supply, formerly of Salisbury, who died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at the Durham VAMedical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 4, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Agner was a son of the late Walter Homer and Ada Isabella Kesler Agner. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from Duke Power Co. after 35 years as a shift supervisor.

During World War II, he was a staff sergeant for 349 TroopCarriers with the 313 Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Stationed in England and France, he helped supply the 3rd Army in Norway with displaced prisoners of war. After the war, he did an extended bond tour in the western United States.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Salisbury, the American Legion, the VFW, the DAV and Brunswick Islands Baptist Church in Supply. He was a former member of the Franklin Lions Club.

A son, Kerry Lynn Agner, died March 26, 1977.

Survivors include wife Mary Matthews Agner, whom he married Feb. 17, 1945; sons Gerald “Gerry” Franklin Agner, Supply, and Barry Joseph Agner, Wendell; daughter Mrs. Howard (Pamela)Wade, Elyria, Ohio; brothers Vonnie K. and Ned Agner, both of Salisbury; sister Margie Hakos, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Bethel Lutheran Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Mark Reed, pastor, and the Rev. David Stratton, Supply. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Ruth McCurdy Bowles

MOORESVILLE — Ruth McCurdy Bowles, 90, North Academy Street, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 19, 1909, in Alexander County, Mrs. Bowles was a daughter of the late Will W. McCurdy and Nina Millsaps McCurdy Bunton. A switchboard operator, she had retired from Lowrance Hospital. She had earlier worked for Mooresville Mills for a number of years.

A member of Southside Baptist Church, she was a member of the Hazel Blackmon Sunday School Class and the Lola Brooks Circle and past president of the WMU. She had served as church hostess and co-ordinated the WMU Family Ministry. She had also served as superintendent of the Cradle Roll.

She was preceded in death by her husband,William Haiti Bowles, and sons Lynn and Brice Bowles.

Survivors include sons E. Muriel Bowles, Guy L. “Buddy” Bowles and Julian R. Bowles, all of Mooresville; daughter Kay Bowles, Mooresville; sister Estelle Wike, Hiddenite; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Southside Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. D. Steven Gouge and the Rev. Hal Greene. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Alma Lucille Daniels

MOORESVILLE — Alma Lucille Daniels, 88, Deal Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 12, 1911, in Rowan County, Ms. Daniels was a daughter of the late Silas Nicator and Lulu Eller Daniels.

Survivors include sons Donald N. Daniels, Kannapolis, and Perry M. Daniels, Mooresville; daughter Mrs. Philip (Brenda D.) Freeze, Mooresville; brothers Carl E. and Arthur B. Daniels, both of Mooresville; sister Mae Rogers, Kannapolis; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J. George Gately and the Rev. Carl Settle.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Edna W. Fink

FAITH — Edna W. Fink, 84, Faith, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Rowan RegionalMedical Center, Salisbury.

Verla Flow Griffith

CHARLOTTE — Verla Flow Griffith, 79, Charlotte, mother of Pat Blackwelder, China Grove, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m.Thursday, McEwen Funeral Home, Charlotte Chapel. Burial, Arlington Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Hattie Fox Holbrooks

KANNAPOLIS — Hattie Fox Holbrooks, 94, formerly of 409 Janie St., died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at the Brian Center, Concord.

BornNov. 22, 1905, in Alexander County, Mrs. Holbrooks was a daughter of the late L. Fox and Melinda Hafer Fox. She had retired in 1971 after 45 years with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room. She was a member of Royal Oaks Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Russell Holbrooks, died in 1958, and a son, Charles Holbrooks, died in 1990.

Survivors include three grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Keith Grogg. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter-in-law Ruth Holbrooks, 2902 Maryland Ave.

Memorials: Royal Oaks Presbyterian Church, 703 Tennessee St., Kannapolis, N.C. 28083.

 

Justin David Powell

FAITH — Justin David Powell, 18, 4410 Mount Hope Church Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center from injuries in an automobile accident.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Jason Eugene Sherrill

The funeral will be held Thursday for Jason Eugene Sherrill, 82, who died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health.

Born Dec. 9, 1917, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Thomas Jason and Katie Margaret Cauble Sherrill. A graduate of Shelby High School, he attended Brevard College. He had retired from N.C. Finishing Co.

He was a member of St. Paul’s LutheranChurch, where he formerly served on the chrurch council. He was also a former Sunday school teacher and Scoutmaster.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Louise Ritchie Sherrill; son Vernon E. Sherrill, Salisbury; daughter Nancy Henderson Poe, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie. Burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Improvement Fund, 205 St. Paul’s Church Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

Mildred Peeler Hoffner

Mildred Inez Peeler Hoffner, 87, National City, Calif., formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at her home.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Dorithas Mauldin Leitch

ALBEMARLE — Dorithas Mauldin Leitch, 77, 535 Meadowrock Drive, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Stanly Manor Nursing Center.

Born Feb. 20, 1922, in Bunnell, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Ira and Aileen Lowery Mauldin. A graduate of Asheville State Teacher College, she had retired from Norwood Elementary School in Stanly County after more than 42 years of teaching.

She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, the NCAE and NEA. She served as a munitions inspector for the U.S. Navy during World War ll.

Her husband, Henry K. Leitch died in 1989.

Survivors include son Terrance Leitch, New London; sister Emilyn Gardner, Chesterfield, S.C.; and two granddaughters.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Stanly Memorial Chapel, Stanly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jeffery A. Sweeney. Burial in Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
