Homer L. Agner

SUPPLY — Homer L. Agner, 78, Supply, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at the Durham VAMedical Center.

Lyerly Funeral Home,Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Flossie O. Craver

LEXINGTON — Flossie Odell James Craver, 86, formerly of Reedy Creek Road, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born March 21, 1913, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Craver was a daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Sadie Phelps James. She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Franklin Craver, and sons Arthur Franklin “Frank” Craver, Robert Eugene Craver, Billy Joe Craver and Bobby Allen Craver.

Survivors include sons James M. Craver, Tyro, and Henry Harrison Craver, Lexington; sisters Ela Mae Fultz, Mary Rose Snyder and Kathlyn Atkins, all of Winston-Salem; 23 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Reedy Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Egbert Craven. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son James M. Craver, 434 Carl Pressley Road.

 

Mary Nantz Daniels Coone

MOORESVILLE — Mary Kathleen Nantz Daniels Coone, 79, Rinehardt Road, died Sunday (Jan., 2, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville.

Born Jan. 24, 1920, in Iredell County, Mrs. Coone was a daughter of the late Clarence and Cora Pope Nantz. She had retired after 20 years in the weave room at Burlington Industries, Mooresville. She was a member of West Corinth Baptist Church.

Her husband, John Charlie Daniels, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons George Daniels, Davidson, and Charlie Ray Daniels and Floyd P. Daniels, both of Mooresville; daughter Mrs. Johnny C. (Christine)Wilson, Mooresville; brothers Oscar Nantz and Gray Nantz, both of Mooresville, Jimmy Nantz, Rockwell, and Johnny Nantz, Mocksville; sisters Lois Williams and Elizabeth Compton, both of Mooresville, and Mabel Leonard, Mocksville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, West Corinth Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Crowell. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Greer Neel Goodman Jr.

The funeral will be Wednesday for Greer Neel Goodman Jr., 45, 1219 Rowan Mills Road, who died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at his home after a four-year battle with colon cancer.

Born Feb. 12, 1954, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodman was a son of Greer Neel and Flo Starnes Goodman, Salisbury. A 1972 graduate of West Rowan HighSchool, he was a self-employed licensed general contractor in business with his father. He was also a real estate broker and had worked on hundreds of homes in Rowan County.

He was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church and a member of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576 AF &AM. An accomplished Western horseback rider, he won more than 500 first-place trophies in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

A former member of District 6 Bass Club, he enjoyed fishing his entire life. He was a member of Descendants of Point Lookout POWOrganization and a former member of Salisbury Moose Lodge 900.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Gwen Julian Goodman; son Travis Andrew Goodman, Salisbury; stepdaughter Mrs. David (Joy)Peeler Lingle, Salisbury; and sister Susan Goodman Sides, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Salem Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford. Members of Andrew Jackson Lodge will be seated as a group. Burial, church cemetery. Masonic rites by Andrew Jackson Lodge.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.At other times the family will be at the home of sister Susan Goodman Sides, 1225 Rowan Mills Road.

Wesley Hepler

ROCKWELL — Wesley Hepler, 23, Rockwell, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at his home.

Born Feb. 10, 1976, in Rowan County, Mr. Hepler was a son of David and Ruth Brown Hepler, both of Rockwell. A 1994 graduate of East Rowan High School, he was a member of First Baptist Church, Rockwell.Employed by Homes by Oakwood, he was a team leader in the electrical department.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Sonya Perry Hepler; daughter Haylee Jean Hepler, of the home; brother Jamie L. Hepler, Salisbury; and sisters Bonnie Warren and Amy Bost, both of Rockwell.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday,First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Benny L. Vickrey, pastor, and the Rev. George Jefferies, former pastor. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of his parents.

Sallie Bobbith McCrimmon

MOCKSVILLE — Sallie Lee Bobbith McCrimmon, 89, Autumn Care of Mocksville, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at the nursing center after several years of declining health.

Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Frank Melton

LEXINGTON — Thomas Franklin Melton, 58, 499 Lake Drive, No. 8, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at his home.

Born Jan. 26, 1941, in Wythe County, Va., Mr. Melton was a son of the late Parlie Jackson and Carthene Dockery Melton. He had retired from Lexington Furniture.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Melton, and a daughter, Tiffany Louise Melton.

Survivors include daughter Angela Martin, Lexington; sons Tommy and Mike Melton, both of Lexington; brother Ray Allen Melton, Southmont, and six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Timberlake Chapel, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Bowen. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Tommy Melton, 278 Giles Road.

 

Jessie Harlin Moore

MOORESVILLE — Jessie Harlin Moore, 85, South Church Street, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at his home.

Born May 14, 1914, in Wilkes County, Mr. Moore was a son of the late Jessie Edgar and Julia Johnson Moore. He had retired as a slubber operator at Carolina Mills, Statesville.

A son, Wayne Moore, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Jerry H. Moore, Fort Mill, S.C., and Robert A. Moore, Mooresville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Glenwood Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. D. Steven Gouge.

Visitation: None.

Cavin Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruth Hilton Page

The funeral will be Wednesday for Ruth Hilton Page, 77, Salisbury, who died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born Aug. 10, 1922, in Charlotte, Mrs. Page was a daughter of the late Howard Beckham and Martha Scotland Pharr Hilton. Educated in the Concord schools, she had retired in 1984 after 20 years with Rowan Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and a former member of the Home Extension Club.

Her husband, Allen Glenn Page, died Sept. 28, 1999, and a son, Mark Allen Page, died in 1967.

Survivors include daughter Glenda Blankenship, Billings, Mont.; sisters Linda Williams, Pineville, and Carolyn Parker, Greensboro, Ga.; grandson Brian C. Blankenship, who grew up in the home; two other grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m.Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home’s Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Larry Twitty, pastor, Franklin Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a granddaughter, Kimberly M. Snow, 1170 Majolica Road, Lot 42.

William ‘Will’ Powers

STILLWATER, Okla. — William “Will”Robert Powers, 16, Stillwater, formerly of Salisbury, N.C., died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at his home.

Born April 24, 1983, in Lawton, Mr. Powers was a son of Robert S. “Rob” and Stacia A. McGuire Power, of the home. He was a former student at West Rowan High School, Salisbury, N.C. Currently a student in Stillwater, he also did carpenter work.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sister Starsha E. “Star” Powers, of the home; maternal grandfather and maternal step-grandmother Michael and Sandra McGuire, Stillwater; maternal grandmother and maternal step-grandfather Dewayne and and Anne Blair, Salisbury, N.C.; paternal grandparents Edna Cannon, Lawton, and William D. and Annie Powers, Huntsville, Ala.; maternal step-grandfather Duane McGuire, Magnolia, Ark.; and maternal great-grandmother Anna Glasper, Salisbury, N.C.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Strode Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L. Underwood. Burial, Sunset Memorial Gardens.

 

Jason Eugene Sherrill

Jason Eugene Sherrill, 82, 1605 St. Paul’s Church Road, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Opal Bradley Shinn

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Friday for Opal Bradley Shinn, 88, 603 N. Main St., who died Saturday (Jan. 1, 2000) at the Manor House, Concord.

Born March 23, 1911, in Hundred, W.Va., Mrs. Shinn was a daughter of the late John Henry and Carrie Allen Bradley. She attended West Virginia University and the University of Oklahoma.

She attended First United Methodist Church, where she was in the Maye Shinn Circle. A charter member of the China Grove Woman’s Club, she was also a member of the Pierian Book Club, the Rowan-Davie County Woman’s Medical Auxiliary, the Salisbury Chapter of the AAUW and the Entante Bridge Club. She was a former board member of the Rowan County Department of Social Services and a Cub Scout den leader at First Methodist.

Her husband, Dr. G.C. Shinn, died Jan. 5, 1996.

Survivors include sons Dr. John D. Shinn, Los Altos, Calif., and Robert A. Shinn, China Grove; daughter Catherine Jane Bost, Fremont, Calif.; brother Dr. Robert Bradley, Lexington, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman, pastor. A private service will be held at West Lawn Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. Beginning Thursday, the family will be at the home on North Main Street.

Sam L. Smith

NEW BERN — Sam L. Smith, 87, New Bern, father of A.T. Smith, Salisbury, died at Christian Care of New Bern on Saturday (Jan. 1, 2000).

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Onslow Memorial Park, Jacksonville. Masonic rites by Semper Fidelis Lodge 680.

William Arthur Smothers

KANNAPOLIS — William Arthur Smothers, 79, 4601 Mooresville Road, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mr. Smothers was a son of the late John Wesley and Bessie Rollins Smothers. He had retired as a warp man at Cannon Mills, Plant 4.

Survivors include daughters Nancy J. Smothers and Sylvia S. Lawing, both of Kannapolis; sister Myrtis S. McCray, Kannapolis; brothers Roy Smothers, Kannapolis, James Smothers, Albemarle, and Johnny Smothers, Indian Trail; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. L.J. Mills. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Mooresville Road.

 

Donald E. Wagstaff

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Donald E. Wagstaff, 72, 310 Odell Drive, who died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1927, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Wagstaff was a son of the late James Alexander and Vertie Bright Roper Wagstaff. A self-employed manufacturer’s representative for men’s clothing, he formerly owned several men’s clothing stores in the area, including Hill’s Clothing Stores in Concord and Charlotte; and Jones Clothing Store, Concord.

Wagstaff was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Concord, and Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge 695. A former member of the Royal Oaks Optimist Club, he had been a member of the Men’s Apparel Club of North Carolina for 25 years.

Survivors include wife Pearl Watson Wagstaff; son Donald E. Wagstaff Jr., Concord; brothers Melvin Wagstaff, Greenville, S.C., and Charles Wagstaff, Norlina; and one grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Concord, conducted by the Rev. John Boyd.Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.
