Ray Willard Barger

SPENCER —Ray Willard Barger, 79, 1404 S. Salisbury Ave., died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2000), at Spencer Health Care Center.

Born May 7, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Barger was a son of the late Myrtle Brown and Derby Wright Barger. Educated in the Rowan County and Salisbury schools, he graduated from Boyden High School in 1937. He was a brakeman for Southern Railway for 40 years before his retirement. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

His wife, Margaret Foster Barger, died Dec. 12, 1988.

Survivors include son James R. Barger, Salisbury; daughter Janet B. Charles, Spencer; brother Bryce Barger, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Carroll L. Robinson, Lebanon Lutheran Church.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

James ‘Eddie’Basham Jr.

KANNAPOLIS — James Edward “Eddie” Basham Jr., 44, 1213 Dial St., died Thursday (Feb. 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born April 25, 1955, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Basham was a son of Doris Middleton Basham and James Edward “Jim”Basham, both of Kannapolis. A graduate of Northwest Cabarrus High School, he was lead maintenance technician for Pillowtex, Plant 1. A Baptist, he served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Mary Frances Thomas Basham; stepdaughters Stephanie and Misty Doyle, both of the home; and brothers Rick and Mark Basham, both of Kannapolis.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Larry Irvin and the Rev. Rodney Evans. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 2-2:45 p.m. Sunday, Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Linda T. Connell

KANNAPOLIS —Linda T. Connell, 50, 711 1/2 Fairview St., died Thursday (Feb. 24, 2000). at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after eight weeks of serious illness.

Born June 9, 1949, in Rowan County, Ms. Connell was a daughter of the late Omie Mae Keller and Edward A. Trexler. A homemaker, she attended Holy Power Church, Rockwell.

Survivors include son Roger Dale Connell II, of the home; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bill Cutshaw. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

J.B. Gobble

MOCKSVILLE — J.B. Gobble, 87, 249 Gobble Lane, died Thursday (Feb. 24, 2000) at his residence.

Born Nov. 2, 1912, in Davie County, Mr. Gobble was a son of the late Flossie and Vestal Gobble. Retired as a carpenter with Hugh Edwards and Sons, he was a member of Ijames Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Susie Beck Gobble; son Larry Gobble, Mocksville; brothers Willis, Howard, Clarence and Virgle Gobble, all of Winston-Salem, and Otis Gobble, Mocksville; sisters Zula Meadows, Greensboro, and Betty Rice, Winston-Salem; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Saturday, Davie Funeral Service Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Wade Wright. Burial, Ijames Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

Bailey John ‘Jay’Hudson

Bailey John “Jay” Hudson, 75, 480 Mike Drive, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2000) at his residence.

Mr. Hudson was a son of the late Marguerite Helen Bullis and Orvil Rudell Hudson. Educated in Dearing and Coffeyville, Mich., Mr. Hudson formerly worked at Turner-Baxter Paint Co. in Concord. He later retired as security guard at the National Guard Armory. Mr. Hudson was a Lutheran. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

His wife, Pearl Bradshaw Hudson, died June 24, 1999.

Survivors include sons Reid Bradshaw and Bill Hudson, both of Salisbury, and Junior Hudson, Concord; daughters Grace McCurley, Decatur, Texas, and Linda Smith, Concord; brother Willard R. Hudson, Runge, Texas; sister Vivian Marie Sevier, Tulsa, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services:11:30 a.m. Monday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Boone. Burial, 1 p.m. Monday, Salisbury National Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Lee Wesley Messmer

CHINA GROVE —Lee Wesley Messmer, 81, 165 Rabbit Run Drive, died Thursday (Feb. 24, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Oct. 1, 1918, in Rowan County, Mr. Messmer was a son of the late Mary Ina Davis and Walker Lee Mesimer. Educated in Rowan County, he had retired from the No. 7 spinning room at Cannon Mills. He was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Mildred Simpson Messmer; and brothers Lloyd L. Mesimer, Kannapolis, and John R. Messmer, Salisbury.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. George Bradshaw, pastor of Pine Ridge Baptist Church. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Maggie Alaia Morris

CHINA GROVE — Infant Maggie Alaia Morris died at birth Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) in Wichita, Kansas.

She was a daughter of Sabra Hayes and Timothy E. Morris of 280 Pipeline Road, Wichita.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include sisters Haley and Morgan Lyon, both of the home; parental grandparents Ernest and Willie Mae Crouch, China Grove; maternal great-grandparents Bill and Mildred Hayes, Gastonia; and paternal great-grandmother Carlenen Crouch, China Grove.

Services: Memorial, 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Main Street Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Beaver. The body will be cremated.

Leila Lynch Murchison

NEW LONDON —Leila Lynch Murchison, 88, 30066 Highway 740, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2000) at Britthaven of the Piedmont Nursing Center, Albemarle.

Born Feb. 5, 1912, in Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Murchison was a daughter of the late William and Maxie Clarkson Lynch. Educated at West Badin High School, she was the former owner of People’s Cafe and Joe’s Gas and Grocery.

Mrs. Hudson was a member of First Baptist Church, Badin, where she was a member of the Senior Choir and the Missionary Circle. She was also a member of Morning Star Chapter 570 OES (Prince Hall-affiliated) and a former member of the Daughters of IBPOE of W. (Elks).

Mrs. Hudson was preceded in death by her husband, Josephus L. Murchison, and a daughter, Margaret L. Murchison.

Survivors include son Josephus L. Murchison Jr., Tampa, Fla.; daughter Pollie M. Dunlap, Badin; sisters Ella Ray, Rockford, Ill., and Hattie Abernathy, Springfield Garden, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. First Baptist Church, Badin, conducted by the Rev. Clifton Parker, pastor and the Rev. W.L. Owens. Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of a granddaughter, Sandra Allen.

Bula Ayres Savage

KANNAPOLIS — Bula Ayres Savage, 91, formerly of China Grove Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 22, 2000) after five years of declining health.

Born Nov. 5, 1908, in Midland, Mich., Mrs. Savage was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B.E. Ayres. She had retired from the sewing room of Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Kannapolis.

Her husband, Nelson C. Savage, died in 1970.

Survivors include daughters Nancy R. Rayill, Indianapolis, Ind., and Kay S. Hoffman, Charlotte; son Rex N. Savage, Charlotte; sister Belva A. Knight, Tenn.; brother B.E. Ayres Jr., Indiana; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rodney and Glenn Lyles Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Earlene B. Compton

CHINA GROVE — Earlene Bradberry Compton, 83, 1010 Mainsail Road, formerly of the Five Forks community, died Friday (Feb. 25, 2000)at the Brian Center, Salisbury.

Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove, is in charge.
