Brett Shane Frey, 20, 5217 Morrowick Road, who died Monday (Feb. 21, 2000) at his home.
Born Dec. 4, 1979, Mr. Frey was the son of Bonnie
Johnson Vaughn, Harrisburg, and the late Charles Gary Frey. He was a graduate of Northwest
Cabarrus High School and attended Central Piedmont Community College. He had been employed
by Harris-Teeter, Carmel Road.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include
sisters Mollie Bangert, Charlotte, and Wendy Settlemyer, Kannapolis; brothers Brian Frey,

Ada Gobbel Pickett
SPENCER The funeral will be Friday for Ada
Virginia Gobbel Pickett, 91, who died Tuesday (Feb. 22, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury
after six months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born Nov. 19, 1908, in Rowan County, Mrs.. Pickett
was a daughter of the late Alfred Tilden and Daisy Sophia Simeson Gobbel. She was a
graduate of Spencer High School and Catawba College, Salisbury.
Listed in Outstanding Elementary Teachers in
America, she had been a principal at Ellis and Franklin schools and a teacher at Spencer
School. She retired in 1974 from North Rowan Elementary School after 44 years of teaching.
Mrs. Pickett was a member of Central United
Methodist Church and the Mamie Lynch Group of the church.
Her husband, Claude Joseph Pickett, died Feb. 4,
1984.
Survivors include daughter Gayle P. Rabon,
Spencer; brothers Harry Gobbel, Spencer, and Howard Gobbel, High Point; sister Edna
Gobbel, Spencer; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

William Monroe Boger
EAST SPENCER William Monroe Boger, 78,
Eastwind Apartments, No. 18, died Wednesday, (February 23, 2000).
Born March 4, 1921, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Boger
was a son of the late Lillie May Griffin and William C. Boger. He attended J.C. Price High
School, was a U.S. Army veteran and was formerly employed at Cone Mills.
He attended Gethsemane Baptist Church and was a
member of the J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.
Survivors include sons William Monroe Boger Jr.,
Marion; Charles Dad Evans, East Spencer, and James Floyd Boger, Clarksville,
Tenn.; daughters Mrs. James (Willie Mae) Sloan, Spencer, and Mrs. Steve (Barbara Jean)
Stevenson, Marion; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Joan Hassler Brown
DAVIDSON Joan Hassler Brown, 71, Davidson,
died Wednesday (Feb. 16, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville. She had been a
resident of Salisbury for 30 years.
Born March 28, 1928, in High Point, Ms. Brown was
a daughter of the late Paul Diehm Hassler and Marion Angel Hassler. She graduated from St.
Marys in 1945 and Salem College in 1949.
She taught in Morocco, Africa, in the mid 1950s
while her husband was stationed there in the U.S. Air Force. She taught at Boyden High
School and later Salisbury High School.
She got a degree in Spanish from Catawba College,
where she resumed teaching.
At Catawba, she was a member of the American
Association of University Women and worked on a number of projects, including restoration
of Old Setzer School and helping to found the local mental health clinic.
She supported the Catawba Blue Masque Players and
Piedmont Players for 20 years.
She taught at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and
was involved in Platypus Productions childrens theater. She won a contest to become
the copy writer and voice talent for WSTP/ WRDX in Salisbury.
She was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal
Church.
In Wrightsville Beach, she operated an advertising
agency and taught English to French citizens employed by Michelin in Greenville, S.C. She
was also the voice of Meyers/Arnold Department Store commercials.
She had lived in Davidson the past 12 years.
Survivors include children Brynn Brown Puckett,
Cornelius, Paul Brown, Salisbury, Dodd Brown, Spotsylvania, Va., and Marmee Brown, Dublin,
Ireland; sister Patricia Schuber, Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE Jim Dunn, 93, 32367 Millingport
Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2000) at Britthaven of the Piedmont.
Born Feb. 16. 1907, in Montgomery County, Mr. Dunn
was a son of the late Ada McKay and Calvin M. Dunn. He had been a stone cutter for
Jacobs Creek Stone Co. He was a member of Hamer Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine
Louise Parnell Dunn.
Survivors include sons Jerry and Jimmy Dunn, both
of Albemarle; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Crisco Kirk
Betty Crisco Kirk, 69, Salisbury, died Wednesday
(Feb. 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two weeks of illness.
Born May 28, 1930, in Stanly County, Mrs. Kirk was
a daughter of the late Gladys Doby and Eddie Alexander Crisco. She was educated in Stanly
and Rowan counties schools and graduated from Rowan Memorial Hospital School of
Nursing in 1958.
She worked for Dr. Charles Eddinger in Spencer and
at Stanly Memorial Hospital. She was director of nursing for Davie County and Kings
Mountain hospitals and retired from Rowan Regional Medical Center.
She was a member of First Street United Methodist
Church, Albemarle, and Salisbury Chapter 117, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include sons Mitchell Monroe Goodman and
Bennie Neel Goodman, both of Salisbury, and Charles David Slaughter, Shelton, Wash.;

Edward Franklin Miller
Edward Franklin Miller, 97, Salisbury, died
Thursday (Feb. 24, 2000) at his home. He had been in declining health two years and
seriously ill two weeks.
Born May 14, 1902, in Davidson County, Mr. Miller
was a son of the late Mary Susan Barksdale and William Loveless Franklin Miller. He was
educated in Davidson County and Rowan County schools.
He was employed with Southern Railroad during
World War II. He also founded and ran E.F. Miller Lumber Co. from 1933 until he retired in
1964. He made and sold candy and became known as the Candy Man.
He was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist
Church, where he was a former deacon and trustee.
His wife, Ova Jernigan Miller, died April 15,
1995.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. Walter (Devona
Miller) Sutton, Salisbury; brother Raleigh Miller, Statesville; sisters Oma M. Miller,
Spencer, Grace M. Martin, Shelby, and Mildred M. Moore, Cleveland; one grandson; and five

Munday was a daughter of the late Locke David Bost and Mary Lillian Litaker Bost. She
retired in 1970 from the set department at Cannon Mills Plant 1, Kannapolis.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T.
