Margaret Trexler Brewer

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Margaret Trexler Brewer, 79, formerly of Mary Street, who died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at Piedmont Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born May 1, 1920, in Davidson County, Mrs. Brewer was a daughter of the late William Wakefield and Mary Wilson Trexler. She was educated in the Davidson County schools. She had retired as owner/operator of Derita Beauty Bar. She was a member of South China Grove Baptist Church.

Her husband, Lester William “Schoolie’Brewer, died May 2, 1990, and a daughter, Carole Brewer Vincent, died Oct. 20, 1997.

Survivors include son Randy Brewer, Greenville, S.C.; daughter Kathey B. Whitlock, China Grove; brothers Elmer Trexler, Lexington, and Bob Trexler, Mocksville; sisters Sadie Tutterow, Spencer, Mary Gray and Delores Yountz, both of Lexington, and Juanita Buchta, Charlotte; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, SouthChina Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Glenwood Cemetery, Mooresville.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,China Grove.

E. Linwood Foil

E. Linwood Foil, 90, Trinity Oaks, formerly of 1530 Arbor Drive, died Tuesday (Feb. 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 18, 1909, in Salisbury, Mr. Foil was the son of the late Ernest Linwood and Ida Bell Plummer Foil. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a 1927 graduate of Boyden High School and attended Davidson College.

In 1928, he became a partner in the family businesses, E.L. Foil and Sons Grocery Store, Foil Motor Co., Acme Finance and Rowan Salvage Co. He operated retail grocery stores and appliance, television and security system businesses. He was associated with several other business firms.

Mayor pro tem of the Salisbury City Council from 1953-1955, he was mayor of Salisbury from 1955-1963, serving the longest term by a mayor since the Civil War era.

During his term as mayor, Salisbury was chosen an All American City with the joint efforts of the Chamber of Commerce.

Foil was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a former member of the administrative board. A 32nd-degree Mason, he was a member of Rowan Shrine Club.

He had also been a member and past president of Salisbury Civitan Club and had received the organization’s highest award, the Honor Key. A member of Knights of Pythias, he was past president of the Salisbury-Rowan Merchants Association. He was also a member of Rowan Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Rowan County Board of Education and the Rowan County Board of Health, and was a former director of the North Carolina League of Municipalities.

In 1959, he was selected as Salisbury Man of the Year by the Salisbury Lions Club. He was named an Outstanding Alumna of Boyden High School by the editors of the Yellow Jacket in 1957 and 1959.

Survivors include wife Frances Mallory Batte Foil, whom he married July 22, 1934; daughters Mrs. Walter L. (Frances)Tatum, Salisbury, and Mrs. Mike F. (Betty)Carter, Mooresville; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Judith L. White, associate pastor.

Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Sultana ‘Tana’ Harris

CONCORD — The funeral will be Wednesday for Sultana Jean “Tana” Harris, 63, 241-9 County Club Drive N.E., who died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center after five years of declining health.

Born Aug. 6, 1936, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Harris was a daughter of the late A.B. and Fannie Reece Teague. She had been employed at Cannon Mills Co., Plant 1, finishing department, for many years. She was a member of West A Street Church of God, Kannapolis.

Survivors include daughters Debra L. Childers, Pamela Childers Haywood and Tamara C. Turner, all of China Grove; son Jeffrey F. Childers, Concord; sisters Priscilla Rosson, North Augusta, S.C., Peggy Bowman, Sandy Springs, S.C., and Jilda Raffaldt, Kannapolis; a brother, the Rev. R.W. Teague, Concord; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, West A Street Church of God, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Sam Crisp and the Rev. R.W. Teague. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

 

Alice Calvert Gilb Lackey

Alice Calvert Gilb Lackey, 83, 217 Lash Drive, died Monday (Feb. 21, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born Nov. 14, 1916, in Tollesboro, Ky., Mrs. Lackey was a daughter of the late Marshall J. and Elizabeth De Atley Calvert. Educated in the Tollesboro, Ky., schools, she had retired from Belk Leggett, Danville, Va.

She was a member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of the Salisbury Retired Senior Citizens Club and the Salisbury Singing Seniors. She participated in Senior Games.

Her husband, Wesley Wallace Lackey, died Sept. 23, 1981.

Survivors include son MichaelC. Gilb, Rockwell; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, City Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dwayne Holt.

Visitation: None.

Jennie Ingram Little

NEW LONDON —Jennie Ingram Little, 44400 Airport Road, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born in Anson County, Mrs. Little was a daughter of the late Mary Jane Ingram. Educated in the Anson County schools, she was a homemaker.

A member of Shiloh Baptist Church, she sang in the Senior Choir. She was a former member of St. Luke Holiness Church, Badin, where she was honored as Mother of the Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jordan Wilson Little, sons James Little and Wilson “Doug” Little, and daughter Geneva L. McLendon.

Survivors include sons Ernest “Pop” Little, of the home, and Antonio “Donty” Little, Concord; daughters Edith L. Smith, Badin, Everline L. Smith, Reco Park, N.Y., Blondie L. Burns, Winston-Salem, and Mary L. Hale, Colmar Manor,Md.; brother James Ingram, Trenton, N.J.; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Shiloh Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Parnell Kelly. Burial, Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of Edith Smith, 39043 Highway 740.

Everette Nail McDaniel

The funeral will be Wednesday for Everette Nail McDaniel, 78, 1663 Sells Road, who died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at his home.

Born July 27, 1921, in Salisbury, Mr. McDaniel was a son of the late Joseph C. and Esther Nail McDaniel. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was stationed on the Battleship Indiana.

A member of First Baptist Church, he had worked for Pet Dairy. He was a self-employed painter.

Survivors include wife Viola Elizabeth Walton McDaniel and sister Johnsie McDaniel Goodson, Augusta, Ga.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, National Cemetery,Salisbury, conducted by a VAMedical Center chaplain. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: None. The body may be viewed at Summersett Funeral Home prior to the service.

 

Grady Nail

MOCKSVILLE — Grady Nail, Daisy Lane, died Tuesday (Feb. 22, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Hardry Junior Spencer

LANDIS — Hardry Junior Spencer, 46, 718 W. Rice St., died Monday (Feb. 21, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Oct. 24, 1953, in Anson County, Mr. Spencer was the son of the late James “Hunter” and Effie Ratliff Spencer. He was a graduate of South Rowan High School and attended Rowan- Cabarrus Community College.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was employed at KoSa. He was a member of Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church.

Survivors include wife Golanda Lowery Spencer; son Brandon Spencer, of the home; brothers Ronnie and Greg Spencer, both of Kannapolis; and sisters Shirley Bennett, Burtonsville, Md., Linda Little, Landis, Teresa Robinson, Concord, and Barbara Alexander, Jersey City, N.J.

Ralph F. Strickland

WOODWARD, Iowa — The funeral is today for Ralph Frederick Strickland, 88, Woodward Health Care Center, who died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at the center. He was the brother of Howard Strickland of Rockwell, N.C.

Services: 2 today, Beidelman Funeral Home, Panora, Iowa. Burial, Union Township Cemetery.
