Dorothy ‘Dot’ Griffis

MOORESVILLE — Dorothy “Dot” Tally Griffis, 72, of Briarwood Drive, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born March 24, 1927, in Durham, she was a daughter of the late W.S. and Isabell “Sissy” Tally. A homemaker, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Mooresville.

A son, William Mark Griffis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband W. Jackson “Jack” Griffis; son Kevin Jackson Griffis, Moores-ville; sister Mary Pollard, Durham; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. E. Harvey Rogers. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: Immediately following the service in the church parlor.

Zeater Earnhardt Grubb

The funeral will be held Wednesday for Zeater Earnhardt Grubb, 84, formerly of Bringle Ferry Road, who died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Haven of Rest.

Born Aug. 25, 1915, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Abram Cicero and Jessie Ingo Trexler Earnhardt. A homemaker, she was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a lifelong member of Union Lutheran Church and a member of the Martha Cauble Sunday School Class.

Her husband, Floyd William Grubb, died Aug. 31, 1994.

Survivors include a niece, Cheryl Poplin Kluttz, with whom she previously lived; and sisters Ada Earnhardt Howard and Edna (Pat) Earnhardt Hoover, both of Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Union Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. L. Darrell Norris, pastor. Burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Cheryl Poplin Kluttz.

Grace Smith Aldridge

ALBEMARLE — The funeral is today for Grace Smith Aldridge, 83, 125 S. Cotton Ave., who died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at her home.

Born Jan. 8, 1917, in Stanly County, Mrs. Aldridge was a daughter of the late Silas Grover and Martha Sophronia Smith. She was a graduate of the Albemarle schools and Mitchell College. She received her nursing training from York County Hospital and Memorial Hospital, Charlotte.

A member of First Baptist Church, she had worked as a licensed practical nurse at Stanly County Hospital.

Survivors include daughter Martha Jane Harward, Norwood; brothers Quentin Smith, Albemarle, and Harold T. Smith, Cornelius; sisters Sadie Helms and Tomsy Gale, both of Monroe, Ruby Smith, Albemarle, and Wilma Smith, Morganton; one grandson; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald and the Rev. Wesley Cribbs. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of Martha Jane Harward, 48592 Highway 731, Norwood.

 

Ray Casey

The funeral is today for Lonnie Ray Casey, 73, 2215 Enon Church Road, Salisbury, who died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center following two years of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born Dec. 20, 1926, in Wilkes County, Mr. Casey was the son of the late Faye Brewer Casey and Lonnie W. Casey.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II after attending school in Wilkes County. He was a truck driver for 39 years, working for Central Motor Lines in Greensboro and Charlotte for 22 years and retiring from Consolidated Freightways in Charlotte in 1989. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and an avid golfer.

Mr. Casey’s son, Ronnie R. Casey, died Oct. 23, 1973, and his daughter, Mahala C. Reid, died June 9, 1994.

Survivors include wife Carolyn Myers Casey; sons Steve Huffman and Scott Huffman, both of Charlotte, and Greg Casey, Greensboro; daughters Mrs. Billy (Kelly) Addair and Mrs. Donald (Polly) Corriher, both of Salisbury, and Sandra Casey, Greensboro; brother Bill Casey, Summerton, S.C.; nephew Michael A. Young, of the home; sisters Geraldine Casey and Mrs. Gene (Mildred) Collins, both of Kernersville, and Mrs. Dwight (Elizabeth) Tuttle, Pilot Mountain; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 1:30 today Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. Clements. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

At other times the family will be at the home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruby Greene Darby

KANNAPOLIS — Ruby Greene Darby, 78, a resident of Big Elm Nursing Center, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at the nursing center.

Born May 15, 1921, in Cherokee County, Mrs. Darby was a daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Self Greene. She had retired as a quality inspector from Troutman Shirt Mill, Mooresville.

Her husband, George Henry Darby, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Daryl F. Darby, China Grove; stepson George Henry Darby Jr., Troutman; brother William Greene, Mooresville; sisters Dorothy Beason, Gaffney, S.C., Mozelle Blackwell, Chesapeake, Va., and Jewel Ingram, Boiling Springs; and three grandchildren.

Services: None. The deceased requested that her body be donated to Bowman Gray School of Medicine Department of Anatomy.

Visitation: None.

‘Buss’ Goodnight

LANDIS — Walter Wilson “Buss” Goodnight, 87, 707 S. Zion St., died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 12, 1912, in Charlotte, Mr. Goodnight was a son of the late Walter C. and Clara Deal Goodnight. He had retired three years ago as owner and operator of Goodnight’s Service Station, Kannapolis. A Landis resident since 1959, he was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Kannapolis.

Survivors include wife Annie “Ann” Allen Goodnight; daughter Mrs. Tommy (Lynn) Poole, Thomasville; brother Kyle Goodnight, Kannapolis; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy J. Norred. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Zion Street.

Memorials: St. John’s United Church of Christ, 910 N. Main St., Kannapolis, N.C. 28081.

 

Roy Allen ‘Jimmy’ Keys

The funeral will be Tuesday for Roy Allen “Jimmy” Keys, 47, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 28, 1952, in Axton, Va., Mr. Keys was a son of Myrtle Mae Stoneman Seagraves, Salisbury, and the late James William “J.W.” Keys. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. A painting contractor for the past 25 years, he had most recently been employed with Bond Painting in Salisbury. He was a member of Locke Township Hunting Club, Rockingham.

His stepfather, Don Seagraves, preceded him in death.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Connie Hartley Keys; sons Matthew Allen Keys, of the home, and James Thomas Keys, South Carolina; daughter Kimberly Ann Keys, Dearborne Heights, Mich.; brothers Johnny Keys, Faith, and Tony, Jesse and Richard Keys, all of Salisbury; sister Mrs. Lewis (Betty Jo) Baynard, Linwood; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. William G. Summey, pastor, Providence United Methodist Church. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at 270 Squirrel Run.

Everette Nail McDaniel

Everette Nail McDaniel, 78, 1663 Sells Road, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at his home.

Dorothy J. Plott

KANNAPOLIS — Dorothy Jane Plott, 90, Mount Pleasant Village, Mount Pleasant, formerly of Kannapolis, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 23, 1909, in Iredell County, Miss Plott was a daughter of the late Rudolph Jeremiah and Mary Jane Davidson Plott. She had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sample department.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery, Mount Mourne, conducted by the Rev. Wes Judy.

Visitation: None.

Ruth Odom Sherrill

MOORESVILLE — Ruth Odom Sherrill, 76, Circle Drive, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Retirement, Mooresville.

Born Dec. 5, 1923, in Putnam County, Ga., Mrs. Sherrill was a daughter of the late William George and Mary Moore Odom. A graduate of Mount Ulla High School and Lowrance Hospital Training School, she had retired as a nursing supervisor at Lowrance Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the XYZ Club.

Survivors include son Leroy Sherrill Jr., Mooresville; brother George Odom, Marietta, Ga.; sisters Willie Morrison, Winston-Salem, Addie Mae Dean, Dorothy Nantz and Linda Moser, all of Mooresville, Brenda Sellers, Kannapolis, and Ruby Mayhew, Logansville, Ga.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Glenwood Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. E. Harvey Rogers and the Rev. Joe Tarpley.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Cavin Funeral Home.

Sam Junior Starnes

CHINA GROVE -The funeral will be held Tuesday for Sam Junior Starnes, 79, of 113 S . Harris St., who died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at his home.

Son of the late Sam Grier and Katie Myers Starnes, he had retired from China Grove Cotton Mills.

He is survived by a number of cousins.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Westlawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Donald S. Wagner of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Visitation: After the service.
