SALISBURY POST

The prep basketball notebook ...

It’s state playoff time, and nine local teams will be in action this week in sectional tournaments in three different classifications.

Both West Rowan, North Rowan, Salisbury and Davie County teams and the East Rowan girls will be playing.

West Rowan’s girls and boys and North Rowan’s boys all drew first-round byes by virtue of winning conference championships during the regular season — West in the 3A South Piedmont and North in the 2A Central Carolina.

West’s girls and boys added SPC Tournament titles at Kannapolis Friday night. Salisbury’s boys won the CCC tournament at Ledford on Saturday to gain that league’s No. 2 seed.

Four contests are scheduled Monday night involving local teams. In 2A games, the Salisbury boys will be at home against Hibriten of the Southern District 7, while Salisbury’s girls will travel to Charles D. Owen of the Western Highlands. Both Hornet teams will play at 7 p.m.

Other Monday action includes the East Rowan girls (SPCNo. 4) at Asheboro of the Tri-County in 3A and Davie County’s girls (Central Piedmont Conference No. 3) at home against Greensboro Page of the Metro, both at 7 o’clock.

North Rowan’s girls (CCC No. 3) will visit Bandys of the SD-7 in 2A action on Tuesday, while Davie’s boys (CPC No. 3) will host GreensboroPage in the 4A playoffs. Both games are set for 7.

West Rowan’s girls will begin their bid for a sectional title at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kannapolis, where they take on the winner of Monday’s game between North Gaston of the Southwestern and Central Cabarrus (SPC No. 5).

North’s boys will be trying to bounce back from a CCC tourney loss to HighPoint Central when they play a second-round contest at home at 7 on Wednesday. The Cavaliers will face the winner of Monday’s game between Parkwood of the Rocky River and Southwestern Randolph of the Central Tar Heel.

West Rowan’s boys, riding a 15-game winning streak, have a second-round contest at Kannapolis at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against the winner of a Tuesday game between Sun Valley (SPC No. 5) and East Rutherford of the Southwestern.

The 3A finals are scheduled Friday at Kannapolis, 2A Saturday at Asheboro and 4A Saturday at Winston-Salem.
