Estelle Adams

KANNAPOLIS — Lula Estelle Sims Adams, 89, 310 S. East Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born Dec. 29, 1910 in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Adams was the daughter of the late John Alexander Sims and Mary Etta Frieze Sims. She retired 24 years ago from Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, where she was a receptionist.

Mrs. Adams was a lifelong member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, member of the UpperRoom Sunday School class, Young at Heart Club and the Sunshine Breakfast Club. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women and served as the circle’s treasurer, historian and chairwoman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Andrew Adams, and a son, James Edward Adams.

Survivors include sister Laura Sims Brown, Kannapolis; brother Bud Sims, Kannapolis; daughter-in-law Imogene Crainshaw Adams, Salisbury; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: Monday, 2 p.m., Bethpage Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Steven Mowery. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home, and 1-2 p.m. at the church.

Grace Estelle Aldridge

ALBEMARLE — Grace Estelle Aldridge, 83, 125 S. Cotton Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at her home.

Hartsell Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Steve Brawley

Cleveland — Hal Steven Brawley Sr., 60, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

Born Aug. 5, 1939 in Iredell County, Mr. Brawley was a son of the late Rosco Clarence and Juanita Deaton Brawley. He had served on the N.C. National Guard and was owner of Steve Brawley Construction and Guttering. He was a member and former deacon of Bethesda Presbyterian Church of Statesville.

He was preceded in death by brother R.C. Brawley Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Carver Brawley; daughters Sylvia Brawley Lilly and Rhonda Brawley Safrit, both of Mooresville, and Pam Brawley Robinette, Cornelius; son Hal Brawley Jr., Charlotte; sister Maxine Finger, Mooresville; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. J. Donald Fowler and the Rev. Robert Yoder. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday, Cabin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Lonnie Ray Casey

Lonnie Ray Casey, 73, 2215 Enon Church Road, Salisbury, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center following two years of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born Dec. 20, 1926 in Wilkes County, Mr. Casey was the son of the late Faye Brewer Casey and Lonnie W. Casey.

He served in World War II after attending school in Wilkes County. He and was a truck driver for 39 years, working for Central Motor Lines in Greensboro and Charlotte for 22 years and retiring from Consolidated Freightways in Charlotte in 1989. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and an avid golfer.

Mr. Casey’s son, Ronnie R. Casey, died on Oct. 23, 1973 and his daughter, Mahala C. Reid, died on June 9, 1994.

Survivors include sons Steve Huffman and Scott Huffman, both of Charlotte, and Greg Casey, Greensboro; daughters Kelly Addair, Salisbury, Folly Corriher, Salisbury, and Sandra Casey, Greensboro; brother Bill Casey, Summerton, S.C.; sisters Geraldine Casey and Mildred Collins, both of Kernersville, and Elizabeth Tuttle, Pilot Mountain; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. Clements. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: Prayer service, 4 p.m. today at Summersett Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends at the chapel until 6. At other times the family will be at the home.

Wilburn Waddell Cauthen

ALBEMARLE — Wilburn Waddell Cauthen, 95, 315 Park Ridge Road, Albemarle, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Britt- haven of the Piedmont.

Born Aug. 18, 1904 in Lancaster County, S.C., Mr. Cauthen was the son of the late Gertrude Becham Cauthen and Lonnie Vance Cauthen. He was a retired store room worker for Alcoa, member of Central United Methodist Church and Stanly Lodge 348 AF & AM.

Survivors include his wife, Eulamae Lisk Cauthen; daughter Sandra Kay Cauthen Clark, Amherst, Ohio; sister Nell Cauthen Bell, Heath Springs, S.C.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ben Wilson. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home.

Daisy Louise Drye

Concord — Daisy Louise Drye, 30, 197 Union Cemetery Road, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born May 3, 1969 in Cabarrus County, Ms. Drye was a daughter of Wayne Henry Drye and Lois Mosley Donaldson. She was a nursing assistant.

She was preceded in death by brother Ricky Drye.

Survivors include stepmother Louise Drye, Concord; sons Terry Talbert, Concord, Bryant Drye, West Virginia, and Nathan Kluttz, China Grove; brother Wayne Junior Drye, Concord; half-brothers Robert Whitlow Jr., Danny Whitlow and Jeffrey Drye, all of Concord; and half-sisters Angela Parks, Huntersville, and Sylvia Whitlow, Concord.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Smith. Burial, West Concord Cemetery.

Floy McGalliard Frye

China Grove — Floy “Jim” McGalliard Frye, 87, 635 Kemball Road, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born September 1, 1912 in Jefferson, Ga., Mrs. Frye was a daughter of the late Marcus McGalliard and Ida Parker McGalliard. A Baptist, she attended schools in Jefferson, Ga. and retired as an inspector for Cannon Mills.

Her husband, Conrad C. Frye, died in 1964.

Survivors include sister Otha Castor, China Grove; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, New Testament Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Utley. Burial, Westlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 Monday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

 

Zeator Earnhardt Grubb

Zeater Earnhardt Grubb, 84, of Salisbury died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at her home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Ethel Jacobs

Ethel Godwin Eller Jacobs, 90, of Granite Quarry died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Genesis Elder Care Nursing Center following a period of declining health.

Born April 11, 1909 in Union County, S.C., Mrs. Jacobs was the daughter of the late Alvin Jefferson Godwin, Sr. and Ida Jane Allen Godwin. She attended Rowan County schools, was a homemaker and worked in the Food Services Department at the V.A. Medical Center. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by husbands Lewis Baxter Eller and Lewis Boyd Jacobs, and son James R. “Jim” Eller.

Survivors include sons L.B. Eller Jr., Raleigh, and Jerry Eller, Yadkinville; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m., Monday, Shiloh United Methodist Church, Granite Quarry, conducted by the Rev. Kay Gottula. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Roy Allen Keys

Roy Allen Keys, 47, of Salisbury died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Sarah Kuhn

Mocksville — Sarah Jordan Kuhn, 75, N.C. 801, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Born March 17, 1924 in Davie County, Mrs. Kuhn was a daughter of the late Arlie Jordan and Mattie Mae Smoot. She was a homemaker, member of Cooleemee First Baptist Church and graduate of Cooleemee High School. She enjoyed traveling to the North Carolina coast.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Merle Kuhn.

Survivors include brother Bob Jordan, Cooleemee, and sister Margaret J. Shepherd, Mocksville.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Shelby Harbour. Burial, Legion Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of brother Bob Jordan.

Fernie Goble Mahler

Fernie Goble Mahler, 91, Salisbury, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Born June 13, 1908 in Brosley, Mo., Mrs. Mahler was a daughter of the late Frank Scott Goble and Bertha Jane Wills Goble.

She attended schools in Brosley and was employed as a seamstress and dressmaker in Elkhart, Ind. She was a member of West Innes Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Mahler.

Survivors include son William E. Johnson, McLeansboro, Ill., daughter Joy Hartle, Salisbury; brother Garland Goble, Michigan; sisters Pauline Van-Hooser of Sercy, Ark., Mildred Maddox, Mio, Mich., and Garnet DeGlandon, Sonoma, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, West Innes Street Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Tim Pinkston, minister of Albemarle Church of Christ. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Joy Hartle, 402 Sycamore Road, Salisbury.

Ruth Pittmon

Kannapolis — Ruth Naomi Haggins Pittmon, 48, 709 Leazer St., died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at her home following a year of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.

Born Dec. 31, 1951 in Madison County, Mrs. Pittmon was a daughter of Andy Haggins and Gladys Ethel Burns Haggins.

She was an employee of Pillowtex Plant 1 in the Towel Sewing Department for 25 years, a member of Freewill Baptist Church and resident of Kannapolis since 1972.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Eugene Pittmon; son Jerry Stephen McInnis, Kannapolis; daughter Tammy Maynard Baker, Kannapolis; brothers Grover Haggins, Boone, Charles Denton Haggins, Curtis Dale Haggins, Marion, and Marvin Dean Haggins, Hot Springs; sisters Kathleen Ethel Palace, Salisbury; Imogene H. Teal, Kannapolis, and Phyllis H. Davis, Weaverville; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Clermont Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Clayton Palmer Jr. and the Rev. James Messer Jr. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Garland Shuping

Hamptonville — Murray “Garland” Shuping, 48, formerly of Rockwell, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1951 in Rowan County, Mr. Shuping was a son of Mary Frances Cassell Shuping and the late Charles Douglas Shuping.

After graduating from East Rowan High School in 1969, he was a professional musician, playing with the Osborne Brothers, the Little Roy and Lewis Family and Bill Monroe at the Grand Old Opry.

He also played in and owned several other bands.

Mr. Shuping belonged to the the First Assembly Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Garris Shuping; sons Brandon Shuping, Charleston, W. Va., and Bryan Shuping, Concord; daughter Kara Shuping, Charleston, W. Va.; stepdaughter Tammy Palmer, Lexington; brother Dane Shuping, Rockwell; sisters Brenda Helms, Harrisburg, Nina Pope, Salisbury, and Marsha Schrull, Blackwood, N.J.; and one stepgrandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. De Hillard. Burial, 4 p.m., Mt. View Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today, Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell.

China Grove — Sam Junior Starnes, 79, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at his home.

Gladys Morgan Trexler

Gladys Morgan Trexler, 90, of Salisbury died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center following a week of serious illness.

Born May 6, 1909 in Rowan County, Mrs. Trexler was a daughter of the late William Thomas Morgan and Mary Louise Harkey Morgan.

She attended Rowan County schools, was a homemaker and member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cicero Tom Trexler, and sons Lloyd Thomas Trexler and Irvin Bernard Trexler.

Survivors include son Terry Trexler, Salisbury; daughters Viola Louise Stewart and Judy Eddleman, both of Salisbury, and Ethel DeRuzza, Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Lori Hefner. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Gladys Wise

Albemarle — Gladys Maxine Austin Wise, 67, 822 Wood St., Albemarle, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Britthaven of the Piedmont.

Born March 29, 1932 in Stanly County, Mrs. Wise was a daughter of the late John Clarence Austin and Zula Troutman Austin. She was a homemaker, graduate of Morgan Business School and member of Cannan Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by sister Lois Little and brother Jay C. “Rooster” Austin.

Survivors include daughter Pamela Edwards, Albemarle; son Donald “Donnie” Wise, Concord; brother Ronnie Austin, Oakboro; sister Ruth Crisco, Albemarle; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Henry and the Rev. Ben Dunaway. Burial, Aquadale Baptist Church cemetery, Norwood.

Visitation: The family will be at the home of daughter Pamela Edwards, 416 E. Cannon Ave., Albemarle.
