Murray ‘Garland’ Shuping

HAMPTONVILLE — Murray “Garland” Shuping, 48, formerly of Rockwell, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge.

 

Paul Lee Calhoun

LINWOOD — Paul Lee Calhoun, 74, 2804 Simmerson Road, died Friday, (Feb. 18, 2000,) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born June 15, 1925 in Swain County, Mr. Calhoun was a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Lydia Davis Calhoun. He was a carpenter. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Laws Calhoun; daughter Rebecca McNeil of the home; sons Darrell Calhoun, Lexington, Dole Calhoun, Linwood, Jason Calhoun, Winston-Salem, Joey Calhoun of the home; sister Inez Cathey, Gastonia; brother, Frank Calhoun, Atlanta; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Moody Funeral Home Chapel, Bryson City. Burial, Davis Branch Cemetery, Bryson City.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. today, Piedmont Funeral Home.

Memorials: Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Burn Unit, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27100-2503.

 

Lonnie ‘Ray’ Casey

Lonnie “Ray” Casey, 73, 2215 Enon Church Road, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Charles F. Bean

MOCKSVILLE — Charles Frederick Bean, 72, Fulton Street, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 17, 1927, in Cooleemee, Mr. Bean was a son of the late Bertha Hellard and Charles H. Bean. He had retired after 25 years with the Ingersol-Rand Corp. He formerly had worked for Burlington Industries and for a short time with American Aviation in California.

A veteran of the Seabees Division of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of the 11th District Memorial VFW Honor Guard; VFW Advance Post No. 719; and Mocksville American Legion. He was a former secretary of the Mocksville Lions Club.

Survivors include wife Helen Shore Bean; daughter Mrs. Kenneth (Bunny) Shephard, Gold Hill; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m Monday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev A. G. Parker, chaplain of 11th District Memorial Honor Guard. Burial in Veterans Field of Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m Sunday, funeral home.

Ethel G. Jacobs

Ethel G. Jacobs, 90, Salisbury, died today (Feb. 19, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare.

Margaret Owens McCoy

MOORESVILLE — Margaret Owens McCoy, 86, Shinnville Road, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born Nov. 30, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. McCoy was a daughter of the late George B. and Roberta Mae Belk Owens. She had retired as a weaver at Cascade Mills after 35 years with the company. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen W. McCoy and son A. Wayne McCoy.

Survivors include son Kenneth Blaine “Bud” McCoy, Mooresville; sisters Myrtle O. Dillon and Beulah O. McCoy, both of Cleveland, Lorene O. Winecoff, Mocksville, and Florence O. McCoy, Statesville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Christ Episcopal Church, Cleveland, conducted by the Rev. Harold Elsner. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: Immediately following service in the church parish hall.

Memorials: Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 37, Cleveland, N.C. 27013.

Martha ‘Mickey’ Owens

CONCORD —Martha “Mickey” Ellen Funderburk Owens, 469 Wilhelm Place N.E., died Thursday (Feb. 17, 2000) in Harrisburg at the home of a son, Doyle Owens. She was the sister of Earl Funderburk of Kannapolis.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials: Epworth United Methodist Church, 1030 Burrage Road N.E., Concord, N.C. 28025.

MOCKSVILLE — Sarah Jordan Kuhn, 75, wife of the late Norman Merle Kuhn, died today (Feb. 19, 2000) at Autumn Care, Mocksville.
