Pfeiffer smashes Queens

BY SCOTT WILHELM
FOR THE SALISBURY POST

MISENHEIMER — A wise man once stated that those who don’t study the past are doomed to repeat it. Apparently, Queens College men’s basketball team didn’t listen.

Had they listened to those words of wisdom, they probably wouldn’t have taunted Pfeiffer University’s team before their contest on Tuesday night. They also might not have lost 89-74.

“We were taunted at Lees-McRae (a 40-point Falcon win),” said Pfeiffer head coach Dave Davis, whose team clinched the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference regular-season championship with the win.

“Queens was ranting and raving at us, and if playing for the conference championship wasn’t enough motivation, then we certainly did have enough after they did that.”

Two Falcons who were visibly motivated were Nem Sovic and Shakil Brew. All-America candidate Sovic started out rough, but finished with a game-high 23 points. Brew blew to the basket early and often for most of his 20 points.

“Nem Sovic was awesome again tonight,” said Davis. “He got off to kind of a slow start, but he was just terrific, as was Shakil Brew. He was great at taking the ball to the hole and they didn’t seem to have anybody that could stop him.”

Mainly on the strength of Sovic’s and Brew’s exploits, Pfeiffer pushed its lead to as much as 10 at 24-14 with 10:26 left in the half. However, Queens rallied to make it a 26-20 deficit with 8:15 remaining in the half.

At that point, the Falcons found another motivating factor when Dwayne Bell took a stiff, albeit accidental, elbow from a Queens player. The shot left Bell motionless for a few minutes, but he eventually got up, received medical attention and returned to the game.

The Falcons went on an 8-2 run to go up 34-22 with 7:16 left in the half. Once again, Brew and Sovic led the way, scoring all eight points themselves.

Pfeiffer poured it on after Queens kept the game close in the second half, pushing its lead to as much 20 at 83-63 with 2:20 left in the game.

Despite the win and the CVAC regular-season crown, the Falcons weren’t overly impressed with their outing — a good sign to Davis.

“We’re focussed on winning and playing well. I was amazed when I went into the locker room after the game. They knew they had won the conference championship and there wasn’t an ounce of celebration. They weren’t very happy with the way they played. In fact, I was happier than they were, which usually isn’t the case.”
