Snow keeps CCC season alive

BY ED DUPREE
SALISBURY POST

The regular season, with one exception, is over, and now it’s time for high school conference basketball tournaments.

Pairings are set in the 3A South Piedmont Conference and 4A Central Piedmont Conference, but not in the 2A Central Carolina Conference.

North Rowan’s boys, who have already won the CCC championship, will be at home against Lexington at 7 p.m. Monday in the final game of the regular season. Lexington will be trying to pull off an upset of the Cavaliers to finish in a four-way tie for second place and gain the No. 2 seed for the CCC tourney. If North wins, Lexington would be No. 5.

The Ledford, Salisbury and HighPoint Central boys have already tied for second with 6-6 records.Lexington, 5-6, chose to play the makeup game at North, because it would need only two wins this week to make the sectional playoffs. If Lexington were to beat North, then win two tournament games, there would be no CCC boys championship game on Saturday. That’s because the North Carolina High School Athletic Association does not allow a team to play four games in a week.

If Lexington were to beat North and gain the No. 2 seed, Ledford, Salisbury and High Point Central would be the 3, 4 and 5 seeds, respectively. Salisbury is seeded ahead of High Point by virtue of a coin toss. If Lexington loses, Ledford, Salisbury, High Point and Lexington would be the 2, 3, 4 and 5 seeds, respectively.

The North Rowan-Lexington girls game will not be played, because it would not affect the pairings.

The CCC Tournament opens Tuesday at Ledford with three games. The second-seeded Ledford girls (21-2) will play No. 7 Lexington (8-13) at 5:30. The No. 2-seeded boys team, either Ledford (10-13) or Lexington (10-11) will meet at 7. The third-seeded North Rowan (14-6) girls will play No. 6 North Stanly (10-11) at 8:30.

Tuesday’s 5:30 opener will match the No. 3-seeded boys team, either Salisbury (10-14) or Ledford against No. 6 North Stanly (8-14). Salisbury’s fourth-seeded girls (6-17) take on No. 5 East Davidson (7-15) at 7. The fourth-seeded boys team, either High Point (11-11) or Salisbury will play No. 5, either Lexington or High Point, at 8:30.

Semifinal action starts Thursday, when the No. 1 High Point (21-2) girls meet the the Salisbury-East Davidson winner at 6, followed by the No. 1 North Rowan (18-3) boys against the No. 4-No. 5 winner at 7:30.

The Ledford-Lexington winner lays the North Rowan-North Stanly winner in the other girls semifinal at 6 on Friday. The other boys semifinal will be at 7:30.

The girls championship contest is set for 1 on Tuesday, followed by the boys finals at 2:30. That boys game, of course, would not be played if Lexington wins in the semifinals.

The SPC Tournament is more clear cut with the top four seeded girls teams playing at home on Monday and the top four seeded boys teams playing at home on Tuesday, all at 7.

The top-seeded West Rowan (18-5) girls host No. 8 Harding (2-15). No. 2 Northwest Cabarrus (18-6) is at home against No. 7 Kannapolis A.L. Brown (6-16). No. 3 Concord (17-6) takes on No. 6 Piedmont (14-8). No. 4 East Rowan (17-7) plays No. 5 Central Cabarrus (11-9).

Tuesday’s boys pairings are: No. 8 Kannapolis A. L. Brown (5-17) at No. 1 West Rowan (22-1), No. 7 East Rowan (4-19) at No. 2 Central Cabarrus (18-5), No. 6 Concord (6-17) at No. 3 Northwest Cabarrus (17-7), and No. 5 Sun Valley (12-10) at No. 4 Harding (15-8).

The girls semifinals will be played Wednesday at Kannapolis with the West Rowan-Harding winner taking on the East Rowan-Central Cabarrus winner at 6, followed by the Piedmont-Concord winner vs. the Northwest Cabarrus-Kannapolis winner at 7:30.

The boys semifinals are set Thursday with the West Rowan-Kannapolis winner meeting the Harding-Sun Valley winner at 6, followed by the Northwest Cabarrus-Concord winner against the Central Cabarrus-East Rowan winner at 7:30.

The girls championship contest is scheduled for 6 on Friday with the boys finals set for 7:30.

The CPC Tournament gets under way at Mount Tabor at 6 on Monday, when the South Rowan (4-19) and West Forsyth (4-18) girls, who tied for the No. 4 seed, battle for survival and a state playoff berth. The No. 5 South Rowan (7-16) boys take on No. 4 Mount Tabor (11-11) at 7:30.

The top-seeded girls team, either Mount Tabor (15-4) or R. J. Reynolds (15-6), will play the South Rowan-West Forsyth winner at 6 on Tuesday. The top-seeded West Forsyth (18-5) boys will meet the South Rowan-Mount Tabor winner at 7:30.

Davie County’s third-seeded girls and boys swing into action in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Davie girls (10-13) will meet either Mount Tabor or R. J. Reynolds at 6. Davie’s boys (19-4) will play R. J. Reynolds (20-2) at 7:30.

The CPC finals are set for 6 and 7:30 on Thursday.
