Eleanor Cason Copelan

MOORESVILLE — Eleanor Cason Copelan, 90, Presbyterian Home, High Point, formerly of 142 Cedar St., died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at High Point Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 21, 1909, in Abbyville, S.C., Mrs. Copelan was a daughter of the late John and Blanch Clinkscales Cason. A graduate of Greenville Woman’s College, Greenville, S.C., she was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville and in Greensboro.

Her husband, Albert Harold Copelan, died Sept. 22, 1989.

Survivors include son Albert H. Copelan Jr.,Knoxville, Tenn.; daughters Mrs. Clarence (Sally)Wall, Lookout Mountain, Ga., and Mrs. John (Evelyn) Edwards, Greensboro; sister Sara Parrott, Cape Canaveral,Fla.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Presbyterian Home Chapel, High Point, conducted by Dr. S. Edwin Lewis. Burial, 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Visitation: None.

Dorothy Jean Cotton

SOUTHMONT — Dorothy Jean Cotton, 39, 133 Ave. K., died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital, Lexington, after three years of declining health.

Born Aug. 24, 1960, in Davidson County, Ms. Cotton was a daughter of Willie Cotton, Southmont, and the late Melvin Holmes Cotton. Educated in the Davidson County schools, she was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church, Southmont.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include son Christopher Lee Cotton, Southmont; and brothers Herbert Cotton, Southmont, and Willie Verdale Cotton, Laurel Hill.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, Southmont, conducted by the Rev. John Gaston.Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

George Frank Feamster

George Frank Feamster, 48, 440 York Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after three years of declining health and a year of serious illness.

Born Nov. 29, 1951, in Rowan County, Mr. Feamster was a son of the late James Henry and Peggy Feamster Still. Educated in the Rowan County Schools, he had attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer.

Mr. Feamster was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he was active in Sunday school, theMen’s Choir and Wednesday night prayer meetings. He won six medals for his participation in the 1999 Rowan County Special Olympics.

Survivors include brothers Wayne and Larry Still, both of Salisbury, Gregory Still, Kannapolis, Dennis and Parnell Still, both of Mooresville, and James Still, Statesville; and sister Linda G. Stockton, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev.W.T. Jackson. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Linda Stockton, 420 York Road.

Howard Thomas Gilbert

OAKBORO — The funeral is today for Howard Thomas Gilbert, 85, 12784-A Hazard Road, who died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at Stanly Manor, Albemarle.

Born Jan. 9, 1915, in Stanly County, Mr. Gilbert was a son of the late Silas Valentine and Carolina Eva Speights Gilbert. Retired as a machine operator at Wiscassett Mills, Albemarle, he later worked at Stanly Knitting Mills. He was a member of the Church of God, Oakboro.

Survivors include wife May Belle Tucker Gilbert; son Melvin Gilbert, Oakboro; daughter Vernell Allen, Norwood; brothers Harvey Gilbert, Rockingham, and Elmer and Lloyd Gilbert, both of Oakboro; sisters Viola Smith, Albemarle, Vernie Huneycutt, China Grove, Celia Clayton, Seneca, S.C., Betty Jean Edwards, Matthews, and Vera Eudy, Thomasville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were to be held at 2 p.m. today at Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel. The Rev.Tony L. Allen and the Rev. J.C. Souther were to officiate. Burial, Smith’s Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will be at the home of son Melvin Gilbert, 12784 Hazard Road.

C. Richard Gillespie

CHARLOTTE — C. Richard Gillespie, 72, Charlotte, died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital.

A Rowan County native, Mr. Gillespie was a son of the late Floyd and Mabel Cress Gillespie and a 1945 graduate of Mount Ulla School. He served in France during World War II with the U.S. Army.

After retiring as a salesman in 1990, he did volunteer work with the American Red Cross with transportation and the disaster team. He was a member of American Legion Post 353 for over 55 years and a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Mount Holly.

Survivors include wife Betty Gillespie; daughters Linda Gillespie, Candy Russell and Anita Self; stepdaughters Lynn Freeman and Beth Bumgardner; brothers Joe and Melvin Gillespie, both of Salisbury; sisters Lucy Gillespie Profhet, Indian Trail; and eight grandchildren.

Services: graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial service, 2 p.m. Saturday, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Mount Holly, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Langsdorf.

Visitation: After the memorial service in the church parish hall.

Orrian ‘Windy’ Goodson

LANDIS — Orrian Winston “Windy” Goodson, 72, 525 Hickory St., died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at his home.

Born May 27, 1927, in IredellCounty, Mr. Goodson was the son of the late Otis Ozelle and Jesse Bell Duckworth Goodson. Educated in the Iredell County schools, he retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections. He had earlier worked at Jackson Training School and at Lagamasino Liquor and Wine Distributor, while residing in California.

His wife, Vera Estelle Poole Goodson, died Dec. 26, 1998.

Survivors include daughter Jane E. Goodson Throwe, New Bern; brothers Harvey N. “Sonny” Goodson, Mooresville, and JohnC. Goodson, Woodleaf; sisters Dolores Goodson Kiser and Elizabeth Goodson Brooks, both of Mooresville, and Laura Goodson Dishman, Mount Ulla; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Colonial Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis. Burial, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Bern.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Luther Dee Gordon

ALBEMARLE — Luther Dee Gordon, 80, 16518 N.C. 73 Highway, died Thursday (Feb. 10, 2000) at his home.

Born April 9, 1919, in Stokes County, Mr. Gordon was a son of the late Wesley Marshall and Pearl Elizabeth Patterson Gordon. A correctional officer with the North Carolina Department of Corrections for 20 years, he was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and Albemarle Lodge 703 AF &AM.

A daughter, Linda G. Lowder, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Faye Hatley Gordon, Albemarle; son Ricky Dee Gordon, Richfield; sisters Kathleen G. Shelton, Hazel G. Shelton, Ruth G. Curlee and Lucille G. Kenerley, all of High Point; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, SalemUnited Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Denton. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on N.C. 73 Highway.

Esther Carter Heilig Lentz

Esther Marie Carter Heilig Lentz, 91, Stokes Ferry Road, died Thursday (Feb. 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

BornJan. 4, 1909, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Lentz was a daughter of the late Jones Ephraim and Esther Iola Troutman Carter. She graduated in 1929 from Farm Life School, China Grove, and in 1930 from MountainPark Institute. She received an associate degree in 1931 from Wingate Junior College and a bachelor’s degree in 1933 from Mississippi Women’s College, Hattiesburg, Miss. She received a certificate of award from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1933.

An elementary school teacher, she taught at Sloop School in Rowan County, 1933- 1943; Cline School, Cabarrus County, 1943-1945; Winecoff School, Cabarrus County, 1945-1955; and Granite Quarry, 1955-1974. She was Teacher of the Year for the 1972-1973 school year.

Mrs. Lentz was a member of Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church, where she had served as WMU director, taught Sunday school and served as vacation Bible school superintendent and director. She was active in Baptist Association work in Caldwell, Cabarrus and Rowan counties until her retirement.

Her first husband, Julius Adolphus Heilig, died May 28, 1949; and her second husband, Council Lee Lentz, died July 30, 1984.

Survivors include son William Edward“Bill” Lentz, Salisbury; daughter Anna Heilig Harrelson, Concord; sisters Helen Carter Kerr, Hickory, Edith Carter Killian, Eugene, Ore., and Mrs. Amos (Neavonne Carter) Wensil, Rockwell; and two grandsons.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday,Summersett Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Donald L. Godfrey, pastor, Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church, and the Rev. Robert Wensil. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Tina Mabrey

CHINA GROVE — Tina Mabrey, 39, 9 Walnut St., died Friday (Feb. 11, 2000) at her home.

Mary C. McDevitt

MOCKSVILLE — Mary C. McDevitt, 86, Davie Village Residential Care, died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at the center.

Born Oct. 11, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. McDevitt was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Haughey Coyle. The first female officer of a savings bank in the state of New York, she had been a bank manager at Brevoort Savings Bank and Lincoln Savings Bank. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Survivors include sons Richard McDevitt, Stanford, Conn., Matthew A. McDevitt, Petaluma, Calif., and Peter M. McDevitt, Advance; daughter Susan M. Adinolfi, Brooklyn, N.Y.; sister Helen Gamolsky, Lakehurst, N.J.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchild.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, conducted by Father Andrew Draper. Burial, Lee Memorial Gardens, Fort Myers, Fla.

Visitation: 5-8 tonight, Davie Funeral Service.

Charles James Morehead

The funeral will be Sunday for Charles James Morehead, 49, 865 Lippard Road, who died Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 22, 1950, in Fairmont, W.Va., Mr. Morehead was the son of the late Grace Marie Morehead Cyphers and Gail “Jerry”Morehead and the stepson of the late Mack Emmitt Cyphers. A graduate of Manning High School in West Virginia, he had been employed by Freightliner and was a former employee of Fuch Systems. He had also worked as a miner with Joann Coal Co.

He was a member of M.I.L.E.S. Motorcycle Club and a former member of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include wife Patricia Ashcraft Morehead; son Michael Todd Morehead, Mannington, W.Va.; daughters Lynn Ann Morehead Stewart, China Grove, and Angel Cokeley, Mannington, W.Va.; brothers Tom Morehead, Worthington, W.Va., and Jerry “Petsy” Morehead, Mannington, W.Va.; stepsisters Norma Jean Guy, Mannington, W.Va., and Mildred Sullivan, Tennessee; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Sunday, View Point Cemetery, Rachel, W.Va., conducted by the Rev. Kerry Nance.

Visitation: 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Masters Funeral Home, Mannington, W.Va.
