Glenn Howell Horton

KANNAPOLIS — Glenn Howell Horton, 87, of 206 Suburban Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Retirement, Concord.

Born April 28, 1912, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Oscar Hoet and Emma Barrier Horton. Retired in 1978 as assistant manager of Colonial Stores in Concord, he was a former salesman with National Biscuit Company. He was a member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church, Concord, and a former member of the administrative board, the Men’s Bible Class and the United Methodist Men.

Survivors include wife Janie Burrage Horton; daughter Martha H. Garmon, Concord; sister Kathleen Jones, Kannapolis; brothers Donald B. Horton, Evanston, Ill. and S. Thomas Horton, Concord; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Michael Kurtz. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Concord.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Margaret Miller Bost

Margaret Miller Bost, 96, died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at her home.

Born Oct. 16, 1903, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Alexander and Mary Lillian Rinehardt Miller. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was retired from No. 2 spinning room of Cannon Mills, Plant l. She was a member of Organ Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Hayden Derwood Bost, died on Feb. 9, 1974.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Ernest (Betty) Bost Wyatt, Salisbury, with whom she made her home; sister Ruth Miller Rimer, Salisbury; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Organ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless, pastor. Burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Mary Reid Ganey

MOORESVILLE — Mary Reid Ganey, 85, 718 E. Center Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 5, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare.

Born Sept. 15, 1914, in Osceriefield, Ga., Mrs. Ganey was a daughter of the late William and Gladys Tapp Reid. She was a retired sales clerk.

Her husband, George Ganey, died Nov. 16, 1969.

Survivors include son George Ganey Jr., Clinton, Md.; daughters Mrs. Donald (Gladys) Griffin, Fredrick, Md., and Mrs. Ronald (Mary Nell) Suites, Hugesville, Md.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Neill Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Hallman. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Ruby Hill Gilbert

MOORESVILLE — The funeral will be held today for Ruby Hill Gilbert, 74, formerly of Oswalt Amity Road, Troutman, who died Saturday (Feb. 5, 2000) at Genesis Eldercare.

Born Aug. 8, 1925, in Oconee County, S. C., she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Delia Dickson Hill. Retired from Western Electric, she attended Beulah Heights Wesleyan Church.

Her husband, Ray Edward Gilbert, and sons, Larry and Steve Gilbert, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters Wilma Oliphant, Mooresville, and Hazel Holshouser, Statesville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Arnold M. Beard. Burial in Coddle Creek ARP Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Alma Gampert Grimm

MOUNT ULLA — Alma Gampert Grimm, 99, of 3050 Bear Poplar Road, died Sunday ( Feb. 6, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born Oct. 11, 1900 in Bochum, Germany, she was a daughter of the late George and Wilhelmine Kaminski Gampert. Educated in Germany, she was trained as a seamstress and was a homemaker. She attended Cleveland First Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters Billie G. McCauley, Mount Ulla, and Helga G. Williams, Lakeland, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service 11 a.m. Wednesday, Cleveland First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Dancy lll, pastor.

Visitation: The family will be at the church 30 minutes prior to the service and also following the service.

Betty Rose Wright Hall

MOORESVILLE — Betty Rose Wright Hall, 77, 122 Regatta Lane, died Saturday (Feb. 5, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born March 8, 1922, in Defiance, Ohio, Mrs. Hall was a daughter of the late Ralph and Arno Reed Wright. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband Robert Hall; daughters Mrs. Mike (Sue Ann) Spath and Patti Jo Hall, both of Mooresville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 7 tonight, Neill Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dick Howie. Burial, Riverview Memorial Gardens, Defiance, Ohio.

Vera Foster Hooks

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be held Wednesday for Vera Foster Hooks, 82, formerly of 26 Thom St., China Grove, who died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center, Aiken, S.C.

Born in North Wilkesboro, she was a daughter of the late James Gordon and Mandy Jane Holder Foster. She had lived in the China Grove area most of her life and was a retired textile employee with 54 years of service. She moved to Aiken, S. C., in 1997 to live with son Wayne Hooks.

Her husband, Luckey C. Hooks, preceded her in death.

Survivors in addition to her son include four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside 11 a.m. Wednesday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Paula Judy.

Nell Miller Jewett

STATESVILLE — Nell Elizabeth Miller Jewett, 95, 153 Sherlock Lane, died Saturday (Feb. 5, 2000) at Davis Medical Center.

Born May 25, 1904, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jewett was a daughter of the late Wilson Watt and Elizabeth Luemyra Ellis Miller. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she attended China Grove Farm Life School. She studied nursing in Richmond, Va., and had worked as a nurse at Wesley Nursing Center, Charlotte, and Brian Center, Statesville. After retiring from nursing at the age of 79, she made her home with her daughter, Sarah Bost of Statesville.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Abilene Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Wallace Beasley. Burial, Back Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery, Mount Ulla.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.

Lonnie Arthur Lambert

ALBEMARLE — Lonnie Arthur Lambert, 81, 23320 Endy Road, died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at Stanly Manor.

Born March 2, 1918, in Stanly County, Mr. Lambert was a son of the late John Filmore and Sarah Rosetta Hinson Lambert. He retired from a sales job with Southwestern Materials. A member of Red Cross Baptist Church, he had been stationed in Europe while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by wives Mary Waisner Lambert and Odelia Allman Lambert.

Survivors include stepson Hal Allman, Concord; daughter Kay Lambert Dennis, Albemarle; stepdaughter Phyllis Allman Vestal, Columbia, S.C.; sisters Mary Brault, Charlotte, Annie Lou Fisher, Mount Pleasant, Patsy Lambert Honeycutt, Locust, Betty Lambert Morgan, Oakboro, and Bertie Lee Ritchie, Stanfield; brothers Carl Lambert, Stanfield, R.J. Lambert, Concord, and Stancil Lambert, Stanfield; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 7:30 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Baker. Burial, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Running Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Ruby Hess McCubbins

FAITH — Ruby Hess McCubbins, 85, died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born May 19, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. McCubbins was a daughter of the late John R. and Nancy Basinger Ludwig. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had worked at Purcell’s and Richard Dobkins. She was a homemaker.

A member of Faith Lutheran Church, she was involved with the Women of the Church. She was also a member of American Legion Post 327 Auxiliary and was active in the Town of Faith’s annual Fourth of July celebration as long as her health permitted.

A daughter, Marcia K. Hess, died in 1957, and her husband, Jay E. Hess, died Feb. 14, 1963.

Survivors include sons Lindsay B. Hess, Salisbury, Johnny K. Hess, Rockwell, and David M. and Terry L. Hess, both of Faith; brother Bryce Ludwig, Faith; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Keith Copeland and the Rev. Judy Copeland. Burial, church cemetery.

Clarence E. McDaniels

CHINA GROVE — Clarence Eugene McDaniels, 62, of 130 McDaniel Lane, died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 8, 1937, in Rowan County, he was a son of Mary Ritchie McDaniel of China Grove and the late Clarence Albert McDaniel. A graduate of Landis High School, he had retired from the U.S. Air Force and was employed with Security Forces of Charlotte. He was recently employed by Winn-Dixie. He had served as chief flight instructor at the Rowan County Airport. He was also a flight instructor in Alabama and Arizona and a crop duster. He attended Mount Zion United Church of Christ.

Survivors in addition to his mother include wife Barbara Carter McDaniels; sons Douglas Eugene McDaniels, Salisbury, Michael Todd McDaniels, Kannapolis, and Jeffery Carter McDaniels, Yadkinville; brother Nelson William McDaniel, Mooresville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Mount Zion United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on McDaniel Lane.

 

Mary Troutman Mills

MOORESVILLE — Mary Elizabeth Troutman Mills, 75, 361 Sundown Road, died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at her home.

Born June 28, 1924, in Iredell County, Mrs. Mills was a daughter of the late Tracy and Lola Millsaps Troutman. She retired from Burlington Mills.

He husband, Nealess Mills, died Sept. 13, 1993.

Survivors include son Tom Mills, Weddington; daughter Mrs. Jerry (Lynda) Dalton, Mooresville; sisters Edith Addison, Statesville, and Madiline Taylor, Durham; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Glenwood Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Bob Lyon.

KANNAPOLIS — Ellen Debra Ross, 38, of 2200 Lane St., died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

ADVANCE — Lottie Viola Studevent, 93, Advance, died Saturday (Feb. 5, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, after several years of declining health.

A homemaker, she attended Redland Church of Christ.

Survivors include son Perry Studevent, Advance; daughters Ethel Eccles, Advance and Mrs. Eugene (Ruth) Dalton, Winston; brothers Hugh Campbell, Jamaica, N.Y., Leroy Campbell, Statesville, and Ernest Campbell, Harmony; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Dodd Williams

CONCORD — Dorothy Dodd Williams, 91, formerly of 144 Corban St. S.E., died Sunday (Feb. 6, 2000) at Big Elm Nursing Center, Kannapolis.

Born Sept. 8, 1908, in Enoree, S.C., Miss Williams was a daughter of the late Rufus H. and Mary Nance Williams. A homemaker, she was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include sisters Mrs. W.A. (Grace) Mauney, Lincolnton, Oleka Baker, Concord, and Mrs. M.J. (Juanita) Barger, Kannapolis.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Carolina Memorial Park., Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Tom Anderson.
