Rollo Jones

CHICKASAW, Ala. —Rollo Jones, a native of Salisbury, N.C., died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000).

Mr. Jones was employed by the Chickasaw Police Department for 33 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora Dee Jones, and a son, David Lee Jones.

Survivors include daughters Elizabeth Grizzle and Ruth G. Jones, both of Chickasaw, and Dee Jones, Fairhope; son Richard Jones, Spanish Fort; sisters Mamie Dion and Lucille Barker, both of Hickory, N.C.; brother Richard “Dick”Jones, Granite Quarry, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday at Chapel of Radney Funeral Home, Saraland. Burial, Mobile Memorial Gardens, Mobile.

 

JamesEdward Correll

GOLD HILL — JamesEdward Correll, 65, Gold Hill, died Friday (Feb. 4, 2000) at his home after 12 years of declining health.

Born March 10, 1934, in Rowan County, Mr. Correll was a son of the late Maude Barger and Franklin Correll. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he worked in maintenance at Tidwell Mobile Home. He was a life member of the Rockwell Amvets and Vanhoy Sells VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Fesperman Correll, whom he married April 14, 1979.

Survivors include son James Edward Correll II, Gold Hill; daughters Diane C. Kluttz, Mount Pleasant, Tonia Anne Helms, Concord, and Starlet Dwan Stillers, Sanford; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks, pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 5-6:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

Allison James Dixon

MOUNT ULLA —Allison James Dixon, 71, Back Creek Church Road, died Friday (Feb. 4, 2000) at his residence.

Born July 7, 1928, in Henderson, Mr. Dixon was a son of the late Edward Hope and Jessie James Dixon. Educated at N.C. State University, he had retired as a tobacco buyer for Imperial Tobacco Co. Great Britain and Ireland LTD after 42 years with the company.

Following his retirement, he was a dispatcher at Roto-Rooter. Mr. Dixon was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Back Creek Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include wife Joyce Harrison Dixon, whom he married March 15, 1951; daughter Josephine D. Hawes, Mount Ulla; and two grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 3 p.m. Sunday, Back Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Alex Coblentz.

Mary Frances Rose Downs

CHINA GROVE —

Born Feb. 9, 1924, in Greensboro, she was a daughter of the late Olsie Pope and Levonie Rose. Educated in the Guilford County schools, she was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis.

Her husband, Joseph H. Downs Jr., died March 31, 1980.

Survivors include sons Joseph H. Downs III, Salisbury, and Franklin and Flake Downs, both of Kannapolis; daughters Gladys Shaver, Winston-Salem, Shelia Pinston, Kannapolis, Belinda Butler, China Grove, and Yolanda Tucker and Venus Black, both of Concord; brother Ardee Rose, Kannapolis; sister Lois Livingtston, Kannapolis; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bobby L. Smith, pastor, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery.

Opal Batten Gardner

BISCOE — Opal Maxine Batten Gardner, 71, Biscoe, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000), at her home.

Born Aug. 15, 1928, in Montgomery County, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of the late Fannie Bernice Talbert and Dan Batten. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by husband William Clyde Gardner, son Randy Ritchie and daughter Patricia Ritchie.

Survivors include sons Howard Ritchie Jr., Salisbury, Steve Ritchie, Norwood, and Barry Ritchie, S.C.; daughters Brenda Stirewalt, Salisbury, and Diane Hall and Patsy Ritchie, both of Biscoe; brothers Paul, Jonah and Charles Batten, all of Biscoe; sisters Ruth Shelton, Asheboro, Shirley Bean, Wilmington, and Judy Atkins and Lois Hill, both of Ohio; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Blanche L. Gelpi

ROCKWELL — Blanche L. Gelpi, 74, 1190 Roy Cline Road, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at her home.

Born Aug. 2, 1925, in Puerto Rico, she was a daughter of the late Rosa Lebron and Felix Ramirez.

Survivors include husband Raul Gelpi; daughters Anna De Ramirez, Puerto Rico, and Margarita Gross, Rockwell; sons Raul Gelpi Jr., Freeport, Long Island, N.Y., and Rene G. Gelpi, Brooklyn, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Nellie Ella Stowe Green

ROCKWELL — Nellie Ella Stowe Green, 83, 5726 Sapp Road, died Monday (Feb. 1, 2000) at her residence.

Born July 16, 1915, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Lottie and Fred Stowe. She had retired as a cook at Stowe Away Fish House, Concord.

Survivors include sisters Mattie McClelan, Rockwell, and Verna Gray, Concord; brothers Grady Stowe, Charlotte, and Chester Stowe, Concord; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Holly Grove Baptist Church, Concord, conducted by the Rev. Edrow Byers.

Frances Smith Hargrave

LEXINGTON —Frances Smith Hargrave, 65, Irma Avenue, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after three weeks of illness.

Born May 2, 1934, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of Elizabeth Smith Hill, Lexington, and the late Carl Davis. She was a member of Files Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include stepfather Dewey Hill, Lexington; sons Donald Ray Smith, Salisbury, and Kenneth Smith, Dwayne Hargrave, Malcolm Hargrave and Gary Hargrave, all of Lexington; daughters Josephine Mason, Mary Lee Wall, Beatrice Conner, Robin Parks, Penny Hargrave and Carlotta Hargrave, all of Lexington, and Esther Mae Powell, Welcome; brother Harvey Smith, Lexington; 24 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Files Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John F. Cade.

Visitation:2:30 p.m. Sunday, at the church.

Donald Eugene Hatley

KANNAPOLIS — Donald Eugene Hatley, 72, Kannapolis, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 7, 1927, in Clark County, Ga., Mr. Hatley was the son of the late Ethel Sides Hatley Hunsucker and the late William T. Hatley. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he had retired as a security guard for Phillip Morris.

He is survived by a half brother, Jerry D. Hunsucker, Salisbury.

Services:Graveside, 10 a.m. Monday, Salisbury National Cemetery, conducted by the VA Medical Center chaplain. The body will be cremated.

Memorials:Rowan Regional Medical Center Foundation, “For Stroke Team,”612 Mocksville Ave., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Rosa Nash Karriker

KANNAPOLIS — Rosa Nash Karriker, 86, formerly of North Poplar Avenue, died Friday (Feb. 4, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Retirement, Concord. She was making her home with her daughter, Gayle A. Karriker of Harrisburg.

Born March 8, 1913, in Union County, Mrs. Karriker was a daughter of the late Carrie Byrd and H.E. Nash. She had retired from the washcloth department of Cannon Mills, Plant 1,after 43 years with the company.

Following retirement, she worked for six years in the cafeteria at J.W. Cannon High School. She was a member of Kannapolis West A Church of God, where she was a member of the Queen Esther Sunday School Class.

Her husband, Vard Coy Karriker, died in 1960.

Survivors include another daughter Patsy K. Self, also of Harrisburg; son Kenneth R. Karriker,Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Sam Crisp and the Rev. James Masters. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:6-8 p.m.m Sunday, at the funeral home.

Lillian Dixon LaGrone

The funeral for Lillian Bright Dixon LaGrone, 103, who died at the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale, N.Y., will be held Monday.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Leamon Brown. Burial, New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Granite Quarry.

Birdie Dean McGarity

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Birdie Dean McGarity, 42, Columbus, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at her residence after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 10, 1957, in Stanly County, N.C., Ms. McGarity was a daughter of the late Birdie Mae Harrison and Sandy Frank Owens. A graduate of Salisbury High School and Virginia State University, she was a member of Advant United Church of Christ.

Survivors include son Victor M. McGarity, Columbus; brother Shawn Harrison, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Leroy Harrison, New York City; sisters Rosemary Harrison, New York City and Ella Mae McConneaughey, Salisbury, N.C..

Visitation and services where held today at Advant United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Susan K. Smith. Burial, Evergreen Cemetery.

Billy McWhorter

KANNAPOLIS — Billy Glenn McWhorter, 65, 2007 Carolina Ave., died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at his home.

Born May 30, 1934, in Kannapolis, Mr. McWhorter was a son of the late Sudie Taylor and Robert Glenn McWhorter. A retired engineer, he had worked for NASA and the U.S. Navy. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he was a deacon at Centerview Baptist Church.

He is survived by a sister, Nancy McWhorter, Kannapolis.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Centerview Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Willie Rash and the Rev. Ralph Robinette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8:30 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Carrie Mae Hatley Morton

OAKBORO — Carrie Mae Hatley Morton, 85, 1471 N. Main St., died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center.

Born June 10, 1914, in Stanly County, Mrs. Morton was a daughter of the late Dora Elizabeth Green and Ruben Lemuel Hatley. She was a homemaker and a member of Big Lick Baptist Church.

Mrs. Morton was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Jefferson Morton.

Survivors include son Charles Lynn Morton, Oakboro; daughter Mrs. Clayton (Irene) Morton Burris, Oakboro; brothers Hubert L. Hatley, Oakboro, Wade H. Hatley, Stanfield, and Roy Hatley, Charlotte; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia Perry

KANNAPOLIS —

Born Nov. 28, 1915, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Perry was a daughter of the late Pearl Goodnight and Cletus Edgar Phillips. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ.

Survivors include husband William “Bill” Morris Perry; daughters Rebecca Perry Graham, Gastonia and Nancy Perry Sutton, Charlotte; son William “Bill” M. Perry Jr., Rock Hill, S.C.; sister Pearl Long, Columbia, S.C.; brother Earl Phillips, Florence, S.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Norred. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Edward Lee Shumaker

Edward Lee Shumaker, 80, North Lauderdale, Fla., died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at University Medical Center in Florida.

He was the father of Sandra “Sandy”Waddell Fisher, Salisbury.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, Greensboro. Burial, Guilford Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

Vera Foster Hooks

CHINA GROVE — Vera Foster Hooks, 82, Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center, Aiken, S.C., formerly of Rowan County, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 1999) at the center.

Born in North Wilkesboro, she was the daughter of the late James Gordon and Mandy Jane Holder Foster. She had retired after 54 years as a textile worker.

Her husband, Luckey C. Hooks, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Hooks, Aiken, S.C.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, graveside at Westlawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Murphy G. Ragsdale

ALBEMARLE —Murphy Garfield Ragsdale, 85, 505 Hill St., Albemarle, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at Stanly Manor.

Born on Dec. 3, 1914, in Stanly County, he was a son of Dora Earnhardt and Henry Madison Ragsdale.

He had retired from Lorch Plumbing & Heating Company as a sheet metal mechanic. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Ragsdale was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Pauline Smith Ragsdale, Albemarle, a son, Murphy G. Ragsdale Jr. of Laurinburg; a daughter, Ramonda R. Tucker, Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today, graveside at Norview Gardens, Norwood; conducted by the Rev. Roger Lowder.

Visitation: Held Friday night.
