LEXINGTON Edna Marie Sloan Callahan, 62,
319 Crews Lake Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at her home.
Born Aug. 11, 1937, in Forsyth County, Mrs.
Callahan was a daughter of the late Sanford Darrell and Ruth Elizabeth Hendrix Sloan.
She taught for 26 years at Grace Christian School.
She was an active member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday
school.
A grandson preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband Jesse Mock Callahan Jr.;
son Michael Dean Callahan, of the home; daughters Mrs. James (Tina) Pressley, Clemmons,
and Mrs. Charles A. (Sherri) Ray, Ballground, Ga.; sisters Shirley King, Ozelle Michael
and Libby King, all of Lexington, and Janeth Bean, Denton; and four grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Grace Missionary Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Gene Davis, the Rev. Charles Ray and the Rev. Gary Gibson.

Sara Childers Coggins
KANNAPOLIS Sara Childers Coggins, 65, 1267
Madison Ave., died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Nov. 19, 1934, in Newberry, S.C., Mrs.
Coggins was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ruth Cannon Childers. She graduated in 1952
with the last graduating class of J.W. Cannon High School. A member of North Kannapolis
United Methodist Church, she retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon Mills accounts payable
department.
Her husband, Billy Ray Coggins, died Oct. 29,
1981.
Survivors include daughters Billie Coggins Sloop,
Charlotte, and Christina Coggins Cannon, Kannapolis; sons John Matthew Coggins,
Kannapolis, and Reid R. Coggins, Concord; sister Ann Erb, Anacortes, Wash.; and four
grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS Della Story Durham, 89, formerly
of Smith Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center,
Mooresville.
Born May 30, 1910, in Watauga County, Mrs. Durham
was a daughter of the late Thomas L. and Minnie Hodge Story. A member of Shadybrook
Baptist Church, she had retired from Cannon Mills Co., sewing room, after 54 years with
the company.
Her husband, Howard C. Durham, son Thomas Edward
Durham and daughter Nancy D. Reynolds preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Billy Durham and Howard C.
Durham Jr., both of Kannapolis, and Guy F. Durham, Cleveland; daughter Joyce Durham
Larrimore, Holden Beach; brothers Howard Story, Kannapolis, and Ross Story, China Grove;
sister Irene Hill, Kannapolis; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and six
great-great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS Viola Krimminger Edgison, 91,
2100 Brantley Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at her home after two weeks of serious
illness.
Born Nov. 19, 1908, in Cabarrus County, Mrs.
Edgison was a daughter of the late Wade H. and Mary Belle Christy Krimminger. She was a
homemaker.
Her husband, Roy Flowe Edgison, died in July 1996.
Survivors include daughter Yelda Edgison,
Kannapolis; sons Tom and Charlie Edgison, both of Kannapolis; sisters Mary Lee Gray,
Concord, and Ruth Crider, Kannapolis; brother Bill Krimminger, Kannapolis; five
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE Christopher Dale Gentry, 28,
32788 Guard Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000).
Born July 7, 1971, in Stanly County, Mr. Gentry
was a son of William Henry and Noma Wallace Gentry, Albemarle. A heavy equipment operator,
he was a member of FriendshipBaptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in
Saudi Arabia.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
brothers Billy Gentry, Oakboro, and Mike Gentry, Charlotte; and sister Sheila Talbert,
Albemarle.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Open Door Baptist Church,

Robert Julius Hogsed
The funeral will be Friday for Robert Julius
Hogsed, 50, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at Grand Strand Regional Medical
Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Born Oct. 1, 1949, in Rowan County, Mr. Hogsed was
a son of the Rev. Jack and Ruth Brattain Hogsed, Salisbury. He was a 1967 graduate of East
Rowan High School and a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, Hickory. Employed with
Freightliner, he had earlier worked as a physical education instructor with the
Rowan-Salisbury Schools.
He was a member of Canaan Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
sister Barbara H. Eidson, Salisbury.

conducted by the Rev. Gene Graham, pastor, and the Rev. Joe Black, pastor, Eastside

Glenn Henderson Parks
Glenn Henderson Parks, 76, Salisbury, died
Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining
health.
Born Dec. 27, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Parks was
a son of the late Noah Jessie Franklin and Margaret Haithcock Parks. He had retired in
1982 from the Salisbury Police Department, where he had worked for 34 years, the last six
as chief of police.
He later worked part-time setting up a safety
program for the city, retiring for good in 1986.
Mr. Parks set up and taught the first law
enforcement classes at Rowan Technical Institute, now Rowan- Cabarrus Community College.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he
had taught Sunday school for over 40 years and was a council member.
He was also a member of Andrew Jackson Masonic
Lodge 576 AF&AM, the York Rite Bodies, Rowan Shrine Club and Salisbury Moose Lodge. He
was a charter member of the Rowan Genealogical Society, the International Order of Police
Chiefs and the North Carolina Peace Officers Association.
In earlier years, he coached the Police
Departments Little League baseball team.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Misenheimer
Parks, whom he married Jan. 27, 1945; sons Charles, Brent and Dane Parks, all of
Salisbury, and Darrell Parks, Trinity; daughters Mrs. Brad (Kathy)Benton and Mrs. Narvile
(Susan)Parks, both of Salisbury; sisters Dale Templeton, Janet Powell and Frances Hamner,
all of Salisbury; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, SalemLutheran Church,
conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford. Members of law enforcement agencies will be seated
as a group. Burial, family plot in church cemetery. Police graveside honors conducted by
Salisbury Police Department.

STATESVILLE Myrtle Lillian Bustle Stewart,
87, 120 S. Meeting St., died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at JourneysResident Care of
Olin after a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 23, 1912, in Iredell County, Mrs.
Stewart, a daughter of the late Bentley Newman and Pearly Mae Nanney Bustle, attended
Mooresville High School.
She was formerly employed by Uniglass Industries
as a packer, twister machine operator and an inspector.
A member of Bethel Baptist Church, she was the
junior class church training teacher.
Her husband, Worth Baggley Stewart, whom she
married in 1932, died Feb. 9, 1973.
Survivors include daughter Nancy Stewart Cansler,
Salisbury; sisters Eva Lo Carriker, Mooresville, and Margaret Spencer, Charlotte; two
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Martin Luther King Drive, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1912, in Montgomery County, Mr.
Surratt was a son of the late Charlie Surratt and Laura Boysworth Surratt Eury. A member
of Lakeview Baptist Church, he had retired as a doffer after 45 years with Wiscassett
Mills.
A son, Larry Surratt, died in 1986.
Survivors include wife Olive Morgan Surratt;
daughter Dianne Archer, Albemarle; sons Tommy and Charles Surratt, both of Greensboro;
half brother Odell Eury, Talking Rock, Ga.; half sister Evelyn Milon, Warner Robbins, Ga.;
nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
